Apr 27, 2007 - Pankor Island

Another bus and ferry ride over land and water and we arrived at the small vacation island of Pankor...we were only there for two nights, where we stayed in the smallest bungalow yet, a little A-Frame Hut with a mattress on the floor...ahh the luxurious life we budget backpackers live! Spent one of our days on the beach with some fellow Canadians, where we swam across the water to a nearby island...the two guys we met had just arrived, straight from the prairies, so we had a good time telling them about the man eating sharks that Pankor...

Matt and Jen in Asia

Jan 1, 2007 - Pangkor Island

Happy New Year! Like most people, I can't believe 2006 has already come and gone - did it fly by or what? In terms of traveling, it was a banner year for me. My goal was to visit 10 new countries -- and I'm elated to report I visited 11 new ones! In 2006 alone I've been to 22 countries on five continents - how awesome is that? It's mind-boggling when I think about it. Some of them I haven't even written about yet - but I do have a "2006 year in review" video at the bottom of this page, along with a video of this week's destination. It takes...

Where's Johnny Jet?

Dec 3, 2006 - Ipoh, Malaysia

I had planned to go straight from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands, but I met a nice guy named Adrian in Malacca who invited me to visit his hometown of Ipoh for a day. Adrian was in Malacca looking at antiques (another person with an interest in interior design) and we happened to sit down together at breakfast at the Hotel Puri. It is funny how randomly you meet people when traveling. Well, Adrian turned out to be a very interesting guy. After studying finance in Australia and business at the London School of Economics, he went to...

Where is John Lama?

Aug 25, 2006 - Kuala Selangor

B - After Kuala Lumpur we headed a short way up near to the west coast to a place called Kuala Selangor where we stayed just one night. We went there to see the fireflies that all gather at night - had boat trip up the river, was v beautiful. Bit like watching fireworks as the flashing becomes syncronised and v dramatic. It was a bit of a strange place to visit, no other travellers but lots of Malay families on holiday with small kids getting v excited about the fireflies - that includes us, infact i think we were even more excited.

May 19, 2006 - To Pulau Pangkor

19 May 06 - To Pulau Pangkor I decided to go to Pulau Pangkor today - an island (Pulau meaning island) which was recommended to me by Leonie, the Dutch girl I briefly met on my first night in Penang. She had loved it so much that she stayed there 6 nights, so I guessed it must be nice. Also, the Rough Guide said it had the best beaches on the West side of Malaysia. Walked to the ferry, which is free going back to the mainland, and straight to the bus station. Several men were asking me where I was going, and when I said Ipoh one of them...

Mar 4, 2006 - Penang

After a 4 hour journey from Kuala Kangsar to Butterworth, we got the ferry across to the island of Penang. It wasn't quite like other passenger ferries i'd been on but instead was rows and rows of wooden benches! The crossing was only about 20 minutes and at the other end we had a 10 minute walk to our hotel in the capital, Georgetown, in the Chinatown area. From the ferry we had a great view of Penang bridge - the fourth longest bridge in the world at 13km long. As we only had this afternoon in Penang some of us decided to do a 1/2 day...

Feb 11, 2006 - Taiping (is)

Feb 8, 2006 - Pangkor (is)

Feb 4, 2006 - Pangkor (is)
