Apr 10, 2011 - Jerantut

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD We had set out for the Taman Negara National Park from Kuala Terengganu after picking up our rental car and getting a little lost in the city, trying to find the highway that led away from the coast and into the interior. I won’t go into any detail here, but I will admit that I’m a nervous passenger, and sitting in the back seat trying to be the official navigator wasn’t the easiest role imaginable. Once we were out of the city, we were on a narrow highway with tons of oncoming transport trucks, no shoulders to...

Sep 19, 2008 - Back to Jerantut & the jungle train

We got the bus back to Jerantut and stayed there for the night getting ready for our Jungle train the following day. Da and Henning tried bar hopping but forgot that it's pretty much impossible in Malaysia! The train journey was long and hot but the scenery was beautiful. It was also exciting standing at the open doorways while the train was speeding along.

Apr 4, 2007 - 2 weeks in Malaysia

Just a quick one to say that I went back for 2 weeks to Malaysia, whilst there I visited Asri's Kampung (village) which is another 3 hours upriver from Kuala Tahan in Taman Negara. It was really nice, there's even a palace there where the Sultan of Pahang used to stay. I got to watch a game of Sipat Takraw which is kind of like volleyball, but using heads and feet not hands and the balls are made of rattan, it looked like fun but I didn't try it! We went to a small waterfall nearby and also went fishing, it was good to see what life is like...

Mar 21, 2007 - Island Coral to Jungle Peril!

Hello All, Jodie and I have just completed a marathon journey from Tioman Island to Taman Negara in the north of Malaysia. The trip involved a 2 hour fast ferry, 5 hour bus journey and 2 hour taxi ride so we are rather pleased to be here now! On to more relaxed things, yesterday we took a fantastic trip to Coral Island. The trip started with a 45 minute speed boat ride to the island. Once we arrived at our paradise destination (and it was paradise, white sand, crystal clear water, jungle backdrops) we were blown away by the snorkling......

Nov 16, 2006 - Malaysia - Taman Negara

After breakfast at the hostel we were transferred on a 30min bus ride to Kuala Tembeling Jetty where we boarded our wooden boat for our 3hr journey up river through the jungle to Kuala Tahan Village, the local village in Taman Negara. Taman Negara is 130 Million years old therefore making it older than the Congo and Amazon Jungles. The Malaysian Government has protected this as a national treasure and all the land, totalling over 4,000 square km's to one side of the river cannot be cultivated. With very sore bums we arrived and checked...

Nov 15, 2006 - Malaysia - Jerantut

Up at 5am and into the guesthouse managers car to take us to our 'Jungle' train which set off at 06:25am from Wakaf Bharu station. We wanted to take in the daytime sights of the train journey so we bought our 3rd class seats (only ones available) and waited patiently for the train to arrive on time, noting that we were the only westerners on the platform. This was definately a locals train, very basic but comfy seats and no air con and some seats didn't have windows! As the train came in at daybreak it was still pitch black with no sunlight...

Oct 26, 2006 - Tama Nagara - National Park

Left at 8am to get the 9am boat up to Tama Nagara. Arrived around midday checked in to a nice cheap dorm roop. Went on a cave exploration tour. Pretty cool, tough going in parts, loads of bats. Too much rain resulted in the caving being cut short! Grabbed some food on one of the restaurants by the river. 27th Went to do the jungle canopy walk, turned out that half was closed for renovation in October and the other half closed at midday, we arrived at 12:05. Annoyed as was one of the main reasons for going to Tama Nagara. Went on a bit of...

Oct 25, 2006 - Jerantut - Stope over to Tama Nagara

Up nice and early in Kota Bharu to catch tehe 6:25 lcoal jungle train down to Jerantut. A 10 hour winding journey through jungles and hills, stopping over 50 times, saw us arrive in Jerantut. It was too late in the day to get a bus and then boat to the park itself so we checked into one of the backpacker hotels set up to deal with the hordes of people heading for a spot of canopy walking and trekking in the nearby park. A terrific thunderstorm broke about 5pm. I'm hoping it isn't going to be a sign of things to come....

Sep 12, 2006 - Taman Negara and Jungle railway

B - From Kota Bharu we caught the 6am local no-frills train on the railway that goes from the north-east all the way through the jungle interior of Malaysia (the "jungle railway"). There were fantastic views from the train tho i was feeling a bit worse for wear and hot too (there was no aircon and windows that wouldn't open) however i perked up when we found out there was a buffet car which, despite having harder seats, had food and drink and windows that opened. We spent the rest of the journey in there. Ten hours later we arrived in...

May 14, 2006 - The attack of the leeches!

Talk about jumping from one extreme to the other! We left the rest and relaxation of the Malaysian islands to rough it in one of the oldest jungles in the world. Taman Negara is a thick, green mass of trees and plants that stretches on forever in the heart of Malaysia. It is the kind of jungle conjured up in the minds of movie-goers. It is humid, dark, wet, thick, scary at times, full of strange sounds uttered by unseen animals, and prone to sudden storms that bring torrential rain and awesome shows of lightning and thunder, yet most...

Mar 1, 2006 - To Jerantut

On to the bus station with Irish Tom and Mist from Iceland. All a bit seedy and tired after our great night out so decided to splash out $10 between us for a taxi. However we ended up jumping out and catching the train as the traffic was so bad the taxi would not have got us there in time. It is not easy getting into an already overcrowded train with a pack on the back and one on the front. Arrived at the bus staion with 2 minutes to spare to find that they had cancelled the bus. (No reason given, but that's Malaysia) But we found another...

Oct 20, 2005 - Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia

Our journey to the park began with yet another 4 hour bus ride from Melaka to Jerantut. At this point a short ride like that feels like barely enough time for a nap. We arrived late and had to spend the night in a pretty stale hostel but with a clean private shower nonetheless. Early the next norning it was a 30 minute bus ride to the jetty followed by a three hour boat ride up river to actually enter the national park at Kuala Tahan. The boat was a bit ramshackle but we made it safe and dry. Taman Negara is known as wildlife park and...
