Feb 22, 2012 - Pulau Perhentian Kecil ** Malaysia blog **

Skipping South Thailand as we had originally planned, we made a bee-line for the beach in Malaysia to warm our bones after chilly North Vietnam. En route we stopped off at a relatively unremarkable town on the East coast called Khotu Bharu which was none the less an introduction to Muslim society in Malaysia, an interesting contrast to what we’d seen to date in Asia. A highlight was also the night market – probably one of the few we’ve seen that makes absolutely no concessions to tourists and is all the better for it. Our first taste of...

Apr 7, 2011 - Perhentian Islands

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Some people describe the Perhentian Islands as paradise found. There are two main islands Kecil (Small) and Besar (Big). Kecil is popular with the younger backpacker crowd but for those looking for better accommodation and a quieter atmosphere, Besar is the island they should choose. There is a narrow strait between the two islands and boats will carry guests between the two if they are not pleased with the island, they picked sight unseen. The high season for the islands is between May and September. Everything pretty...

Apr 29, 2010 - Pulau Perhentian

Sep 29, 2009 - Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Long Beach

Sept 29-Oct 3rd, 2009 Pulau Perhentian Kecil...hello Long Beach. We actually ended upstaying up on the hill right next to the trail to go to Coral Beach on the other side of the Island...a 15 minute walk...it was great because we had easy access to both beaches. The beaches on the Perhentian Island were 'better' than the Tioman ones. Less rocks...more extensive white sandy stretches...it was good. Mosquitoes were always feasting...luckily there were mosquitoe nets and repellent coils. I had one of the best snorkelling days. I saw a black...

Jun 26, 2009 - Perhentian Islands

Sep 21, 2008 - Pulau Perhentian Kecil

26-9-08: We've been staying on the smaller of the two Perhentian Islands (Kecil) for nearly a week now, and we love it here :). It's the end of the season (the monsoons will be here soon), so the beautiful white powdery beach and warm blue sea are far from crowded! We've been working hard (as you have to here!), snorkling with black tip reef sharks, big friendly green turtles, stingrays and LOTS of other fishes; diving (we're now 'advanced' divers - yay! - and we saw seahorses - lots of yay!!); and getting sunburnt (ok, so that's just...

Aug 22, 2008 - Pulau Perenthian

Alright so a lot have happened since the last entry, it could all be summed up with 'wow' I guess, in all possible meanings of the word. (as in nice, pain, itch, stress and stuff) I'll make it short as otherwise it'll be too much and too boring to read. So we left Mersing and took off to Cherating, a little seaside village. Quiet and not much happening there. It was overcast the days we were there so we did nothing. Absolutely nothing. And that was so nice you wouldn't believe it. Never realized you needed a holiday from your holiday. We...

Jul 31, 2008 - Perhentian Paradise

Another early morning. Up early to take advantage of the free hotel breakfast and have time to pack up our bags. We walked for about 20 minutes to the Putra bus station and arrived at 8:00am, about half an hour before our departure time. We bought a couple bottles of water and waited for the bus. The journey was fine – the bus was clean, air conditioned and had ample legroom. The driver put our endurance, batteries and bladders to the test by only stopping once throughout the journey. We slept through some of the trip and passed the rest...

Feb 21, 2008 - Kota Bharu and Perenthian Islands

15 Feb 2008 Kota Bharu is the end of the line for the train journey and apart of some monuments and museums can only be described as “no-descript”. I did enjoy the tri-shaw ride around town. Cars and busses miraculously seem to respect these old men on their even older machines, leisurely cycling their way through the traffic. A couple of side trips on local busses to small coastal towns also turned out to be not worth-while, except Pental Cahaya Bulan which provided a bit of colour and not as much pollution as the other places. PCB is...

Feb 16, 2008 - Jungle Train

Like big brown pythons, the rivers dance in slow rhythm with the train, meeting here and there, crossing each her in a sensual slow embrace and, all the time the green, green jungle. Evidence of the old-growth primal rain forest can be seen from time to time and often a single forlorn example, like a lonely but still majestic giant, towers over the rest. There’s much evidence of clear-cutting along the way. One can only guess what’s happening out of sight. But enough depressing thoughts. The train, 3rd class with the exception of one 2nd...

Oct 18, 2007 - Perhentian Island - Kecil, Long Beach

We had a pretty hassle free trip to the Perhentian islands and found a place to stay the first night. After dropping off our bags, we explored the area in more detail and found better accommodation for the next few days. On the journey over, we met two guys, Colin and Derrick, and later met them for dinner. Unfortunately, we soon discovered that our place for the night was the hotspot for late night partying. The music was thumping through the walls and kept us from sleeping until a little after 4am. We woke three hours later determined to...
