Dec 25, 2010 - Christmas in Melaka!

What a fabulous Christmas! It all started when Henry and Marica from Holland and Keith from the UK and I decided to go out for a couple of drinks in Chinatown on Christmas eve. The was a big celebration and the streets were lined with market stalls with gifts and food. Every Chinese pub was packed to the brim and there was a very noticable Christmas cheer in the air. We found our spot at the front of the stage at a bar, where a Chinese performer was singing American cover songs and all the locals were singing along with beer in hand. Then...

Dec 24, 2010 - Melaka

I arrived in Melaka in the pouring rain, found Jalan Jalan guesthouse and once the rain had subsided stepped out for a bite to eat with my new friend Gideon from Holland. He is a strict vegetarian so we had to wonder around for a while to fine something suitable. Gideon is kind, very political and intelligent. I spent the next day with him having a look around the heritage trail. The town is quite cute- there is a well banked river that runs through the centre of town and lots of old Dutch buildings which makes it have a slight European...

Nov 15, 2010 - Malacca

Oct 24, 2010 - Melaka

We got a coach from Singapore to Melaka which took around 4 hours. Nearly had a bit of trouble getting over the border got stopped at customs as we did not have our visa card as our hotel had kept it and we didn't realise we needed it, kept the coach waiting a little bit we made it over the border and into Malaysia in the end. Walked into the town and was glad to find it to be quite cheap went to a few bars and had some nice cocktails in a bar called Geographic. Jonker street had streets stalls all along it and at one end there were loads...

Oct 16, 2010 - Malaisie.

Jun 25, 2010 - Jon's birthday

My birthday!! The treat for my birthday was to stay in a hotel that would normally be outside our range. It's one we'd looked at when we first came to Melaka but had decided that was too expensive, lovely though it was. It was an old Malay house, lovingly restored and extended. Now it had lots of old features with shady, leafy courtyards for the cafe and to have breakfast in. So, we moved. Unfortunately, that logistical effort set the tone for much of the rest of the day. We were moving to Singapore the following day and transport and...

Jun 24, 2010 - Bike ride

We woke up late and had breakfast me and Dad went out for a 18 kilometre bike ride. Mum was ill again but we took her to a doctor and he gave her some eye drops. We first drove to our guides house. Our guide is Malaysian. His house has got a whole room filled with bikes helmets and protective pads. He even has his own casualty tree were he puts all his broken helmets and bikes. We saw lots of chickens and cats. We got our bikes and started the bike trip. Most of the path is through the forest. The guide told us to watch out for falling...

Jun 24, 2010 - Bike ride

I started the day with a bit of a travel-related grump, possibly also something to do with the extra beers had watching the football the night before. Having to carry everything around, I need to travel light. So I have only two pairs of trousers. Being mostly in hot places, I chose light colours. So yesterday I changed into my second pair, the first being ready to be washed. Then I eat and have some drinks watching the football, perhaps not paying full attention to what I'm doing. So in the morning, there are a few drips of sauce / beer on...

We woke up late and went to the Toast n Toast restaurant. The restaurant served only toast and drinks. They had three clocks representing breakfast lunch and dinner. Breakfast:Eat toast. Lunch:can eat toast Dinner:also can eat toast. I ate french toast and chocolate milkshake. We then changed hotels because the hotel we were at wasn't nice. We passed a vets with animals in tiny cages. We arrived at the hotel and stayed there until 1:00. We went to the little India. Melaka is quite small but has got loads of traffic. In Melaka they often...

Jun 23, 2010 - That's better!

A day of improvements. We had a room with a demonic bathroom in an area we didn't like. Poor Riffat was sleeping under a towel because the sheets looked, well, suspicious. It had started raining heavily overnight and the ceiling was leaking. Guess where? Yes, onto Riffat's bed, at the pillow end. She had some sort of stubborn infection in the sinus area that was making her eyes bloodshot and sore. So, Riffat had a rubbish night, but we woke up with a mission to improve things. I'd found an eye clinic just down the road and we had a nice...

Jun 22, 2010 - Arrive in Melaka

A bit of a rubbish day, overall. Not terrible, just a bit rubbish! We had a smooth enough exit from Kuala Lumpur and only a 2 hour trip here. We had a reasonable plan for finding somewhere OK to stay....it just didn't quite work out. Most places were up 2 flights of stairs (not OK for Riffat's knee. Of those that weren't, one had work being done to the flooring and a strong smell of solvents filled the building. We'd have woken up with headaches and strange new cravings, no doubt. So we chose the other one. It was roomy enough, if utterly...
