Mar 14, 2012 - Day 2 Melaka

We arrived at MOZAC, a school which specializes in science on the second day and were greeted by a series of performances when we entered their auditorium. First up was the silat, similar to taekwondo in Singapore. We started off with our National anthem and a given speech from both our teachers and their principal. After which, we had a cultural performance done by our school. Along the way, we met several setbacks such as finding a toilet to change into our costumes and the limited amount of time that we had to practice our dance steps...

My Big Trip

Jan 4, 2012 - Melaka

If it wasn't for the traffic, the lack of sidewalks, and the heat, Melaka is a place where I could easily spend a week or two. Older than Kuala Lumpur, the city has a lot of history and many historical buildings remain, mainly from the Dutch colonial period (17-19th century I believe). The Dutch came after the Portuguese and before the British. And before all these Europeans came Chinese men who inter-married with the local women creating a race called Baba-Nonya (or Perenakan). They have a distinctive cuisine and culture which is...

Dec 26, 2011 - Malaysia - Day 21 - 23 Christmas in Melaka Malaysia

After having spent the night at McDonald's in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, we took the 9:00am Bus to Melaka, then the local bus to Town Center, where we walked another 15minutes to our new home for 3 nights. Our first impression of Melaka was good, and the following days confirmed that this little city is quite nice indeed. Melaka's 600 years of history is reflected in its ancient buildings, intriguing streets, delectable cuisine and unique cultural heritage. In the 16th century, Melaka enjoyed a reputation as the foremost maritime...

Dec 23, 2011 - Malaysia - Day 20 - Good-Bye Borneo, Hello West Peninsula Malaysia

Jason and I spent the morning wandering around Semporna, where we bought some fresh fruit from the local market, and sat on the wharf to enjoy a chocolate/peanut butter waffle and a few blended coffees. We reflected over the last three days on the Island of Mabul, the snorkeling and diving we did and all the animals we were able to see. Although the ocean waters did not produce the clarity we wanted for our water sports we did however enjoy our dives. The waters surrounding the Island of Mabul is very polluted with garbage (every kind...

Dec 8, 2011 - Malaysia

Please note that we are having some difficulty in getting photos uploaded. This is because we've changed the computer for this trip and it will not work the same as the other. If we can't sort it we'll have to move to another site but will let you know. Monday 5th December Left Singapore this morning on the bus and crossed the causeway into Malaysia. Met a guy called Ravi who liked to practise his 'Western accent' (anyone who knows Dave well will realise that he did not appreciate this attention so it was mostly directed at me). He was...

Nov 16, 2011 - 3 Countries, One Week

I apologize in advance, this one is eight days worth so it's a day long... After a long lazy day of relaxing around the guesthouse and lounging around with my two new Dutch friends, I was escorted by the two of them to the train station to wave me goodbye on my overnight train into Bandung. Was a tearful goodbye, but definitely will have to meet up with them again soon. The train ride went fairly quick as I was apparently much more tired than I had expected and slept for most of the ride. Arriving in Bandung, I went for quite a hike to...

Nov 15, 2011 - Melaka is a Cracker

15/11/2011: Hi everyone, We are now on the south-west coast in a town called Melaka (spellings vary). We have checked in to a lovely little guest house with a HOT shower! Believe me it is sooo good to have a power shower when you need one out here. Our coach ride was delayed by one hour because a lorry had shed its load of watermelons across the motorway. The site of these Malaysian guys running about collecting melons from down the embankment was brilliant. Now off exploring Pics to follow. Much love to a you all, love Chris and Petrina...

Asian Adventure 2011

Apr 27, 2011 - Mmmmm Malasian food

Crossing the border into Malaysia was really easy and we were quickly heading towards our first stop Melaka. There are three main reasons to visit Melaka 1-the history, 2-the food and night markets, 3-there is a man who can put his finger through a coconut! 3 being the winner for us. On discovering that the bus station was not the one we thought it was, we were safely guided to a friendly hostel by a helpful American. Time to explore Melaka. We spent the day wandering through the old city and china town. We found lots of cool temples and an...

Feb 4, 2011 - Melaka

On waking my stomach was even worse than any day previous. Very confusing as I have been taking Diarrhea relief.. or so I thought. After thoroughly inspecting the packet I learnt had been sold Laxatives instead of Diarrhea relief. Very unhappy and feeling poorly, our departure from KL was up in the air. The worst place to get stuck ill, I thought. Luckily after some PMT {positive mental attitude} I decided mind over matter and we set off for the bus terminal. We opted against the hectic bus and settled for a taxi which wasn't that much more...
