Aug 22, 2006 - Into Malaysia - Melaka

On Tuesday 22nd August I left Singapore for Malaysia - first stop the historical city of Melaka. Despite hotel accommodation being so affordable I opted for a room in a 'guest house' here so as to mingle with other travellers. A negative consequence of my stay in luxury in Singapore was the lack of contact I had with other people; other than random businessmen who I walked to breakfast with, I barely spoke to anyone in Singapore - but the solitude was more than made upfor by the fact I had a bath!!! My five hour bus journey turned into a...

Claire's Big Trip!

Jul 27, 2006 - Melaka, Malaysia

Melaka is a historical port city and some say it is the soul of Malyasia. Spending a lot of time in Chinatown which is full of wonderful old buildings, temples and fantastic food. We have also met up with Stephan's brother, Gerrit, and his son Guy. They are heading back to the states to start school in a few weeks so we are able to enjoy some last minute fun with them. Annika is so happy to have her cousin around to play with!! Heading to the zoo, butterfly farm and the waterpark today!

Jun 11, 2006 - Melaka

Melaka is one of the most historically significant cities in Malaysia. A 15th century port city, and the greatest trading post in SE Asia at the time, Melaka has attracted the attention of many European powers, each leving a distinct mark on the city landscape and its culture. Melaka is a medley of Chinese, Islamic and European cultures, evident by the presence of Peranakan shophouses, Portuguese and Dutch architecture, Buddhist, Taoist and Indian Temples, as well as Islamic Mosques. We took a burn around town in early morning, before...

Somewhere in Asia

Jun 10, 2006 - Batu Pahat to Melaka

Woke up very early. Rode for a while until one of us had to have a nap at a nearby bus stop. A very long ride. Tonnes to see along the way. People everywhere unlike the East Coast. We took a side road for a while. We stopped to share some lovely papaya, and had the road mostly to ourselves for nearly 20km. Myles got a flat again - so far they all happened in very convenient locations. Rode into Melaka in late afternoon. Asked 10 or so people for directions before finally collapsing on a bed somewhere for a good night's sleep.

Somewhere in Asia

May 30, 2006 - Melaka, Formula 1 racing & the hitchhiking story!

We arrived in Melaka and checked into our guesthouse before venturing over to the shopping mall nearby, where we played a little Photo Hunt and other arcade games. That evening, we went to the main evening attraction - the Sound & Light show - a recorded history of Melaka with random spotlights turned on on various buildings in front of the stadium seating. This was written up as "the thing to do/see" in Melaka. There were about 7 people there and the show was less than fantastic. In fact, everyone looked laughed with confusion as they were...

Lisa's Journey

May 4, 2006 - Singapore - Malaysia

I decide to take up an offer to join two British girls while travelling in Malaysia. We set off to find the cheapest way to get to Melacca in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the cheapest way turns out to be the most time consuming and difficult way to get over the border. It involves getting on and off several buses and trying to interpret instructions from people who don't speak much English. But we make it eventually and settle in to a small guesthouse in Melacca for a couple of nights.

Skye's Travels

Apr 30, 2006 - Malacca

We were warned not to bother with Malacca, but we took the launch to the mainland and just had a stroll around. It isn't too bad, very busy. It has a few mesuems and the like, but it is very hot and humid. The Portuguese influence is evident in the building architecture, and we are told there is a dialect of Portuguese spoken here that no longer exists in Portugal. It is very hot and busy. I take a few photos, lynne buys a few trinkets and we catch the next available launch back to the vessel after a few hours. Lynne and Steve

Apr 7, 2006 - Back in Malaysia - Melaka

I am back in Malaysia with Catherine a Kiwi girl I met in Singapore! We are on our way to KL but we decided to stop on the way for one night in Melanka which is suppposed to be the true heart of Malaysia. We are staying in a guest house named Kancil Guest House and I really love the place. It's so nice and so peacefull. It's own by an old man who looks like a monk and who has been very helpfull to us! Melanka itself is pretty small compare to the other places I visited so far in Asia, and so that's a great feeling to be out of the city and...

Feb 27, 2006 - Melaka, Malaysia

After about 45 minutes with 18kgs on my back (we got the MRT and then walked to the bus station!) we got a coach from Singapore to Melaka. It was so strange going into a different country without flying! (Something ive never done before!)The journey was about 4 1/2 hrs in total. When we crossed over the bridge into Malaysia you could tell instantly we were out of clean and modern Singapore! One thing that was lovely was the amount of landscaped areas along and between the roads! Flowers and trees and even a large waterfall in one place as...

Feb 25, 2006 - Kuching to Melaka

Another plane trip back to Johor Bahru and then a couple of bus rides got me to Melaka, where I spent 2 days in the company of a Dutchman. Hans, 63, retired banker was very well travelled so I got lots of good information from him. We stayed at he same hostel and did the sites together. He was good company. We walked the town from 10am to 10pm. It was hot amd muggy and I probnably would have given up earlier and found a nice air conditioned bar had I been on my own, so it was good to have the motivation to keep going. We even found...

Karen's Trip 2006

Feb 16, 2006 - Melaka (is)
