Feb 21, 2009 - MELAKA, MALAYSIA

Continuing onward after several days in Singapore, I took a bus on this day across the border into Malaysia, home of the Malay people. I decided to stop in Melaka, one of the major cities in the country, and just a 3 hour busride across the border. These images are just some random shots outside my hotel and a video showing my room when I was there.

Feb 20, 2009 - Melaka

Had the afternoon in KL so I had a Roti for breakfast and went to the Post Office to get rid of some of my souvenirs and postcards. The coach journey to Melaka was fairly short and once we arrived we broke up into 3's to get taxi's to the hotel. We ended up with the Lewis Hamilton of the taxi fraternity. At one point he seemed to be braking for the red light but then decided what the heck at 60 mph he could probably make the turn across the traffic without turning the cab over......he was right! Two near misses with pedestrians who thought...

Feb 9, 2009 - Melaka

Good afternoon! So after touring Singapore yesterday.. I lounged by the pool, got a very impressive tan for being out there only a short while and then popped over to meet my tour group in China town. WOAH what a difference a hotel makes :S I can't say I've ever experienced a room with mold on the ceiling and a dirty bathroom like that but hey- I'm coping. I am paired with a nice girl from England who is new to this travelling on your own business as well. The rest of the group consists of a retired couple from NY, some boys from England,...

Jan 29, 2009 - Melaka, Malaysia

29/01/09 Our trip to Melaka started off being a bit of a "filler" trip. Our original intent was to go to Taman Negara (which is a rain forest/hiking area about 6 hours NE of KL) but due to Chinese New Year and the fact that it was still the rainy season there - we developed alternate plans ...hence - Melaka!! With 3 nights and 2 full days, Melaka was a great destination especially for foodies like us. Melaka is a historic port city about 2 hours south of KL. Due to its seaside location, over the past 600 years, in addition to the native...

Nov 27, 2008 - Kota Bahru/Jerantut/Taman Negara/Kuala Lumpur/Genting Highlands/Cameron Highlands/Penang

Just a final word on our day from hell in Kota Baru - having my long awaited shower at the smelly hotel, after washing our travel-stained clothes, tried to open my backpack but found the combination lock was stuck, so after an hour of twisting, pulling and dial twiddling, Peter valiantly left with the bloody thing to find a lock-smith to cut it off. Finally found a hardware store after an hour - as Peter was demonstrating how a combination lock works (and why it was stuck) it unlocked.....seems I'd re-locked the bloody thing with a new...

We left Singapore on Friday on the 1.30pm bus to Melaka in Malaysia. Melaka is 4 hours from Singapore and 2 hours from KL. Melaka is an historical town which was once run by Portuguese, Dutch and British. This history background make this little town so unique. We arrived by 5.30pm and checked into our guesthouse then we were off to Jonker Walk, a street in Chinatown which comes alive at night with street vendors selling foods and souvenirs. They even had a karoake stage for locals to get up and sing there hearts out and suprisingly there...

Mar 28, 2008 - Saleem's letter home from Melacca

Hi everyone, Just a quick note to let you know we're all doing well. We're in Malacca on the southwest coast of Malaysia, very old city on the strait of Malacca with an interesting colonial past (portuguese, dutch, british), and fascinating blending of cultures. Excellent Chinatown - we'll be checking out the nightmarket shortly. After Penang, we spent 2 nights in Kuala Lumpur, which was pretty manageable given that it's such a large city. Again, fascinating mix of cultures, and very modern all in all. We went to a very interesting Museum...

Mar 6, 2008 - Melaka

After a tough interview, I (Alison) have been appointed to the temporary post of blog writer. I was pleased that David and Victoria booked a luxury bus to travel from KL to Melaka as no pushing was required! We stayed in a good hotel and Victoria enjoyed her first bath in 3 months!! Melaka is being rebuilt and will probably be THE place to visit in 5 years time. Election flags were everywhere with the election taking place on Saturday. A good part-time job opportunity for many teenagers was trying to get others to vote although they were...

Feb 11, 2008 - Feb 10/11 - Melacca

From Singapore we caught a bus to Johor Bahru in Malaysia and promptly decided we would continue on to find a better place to stay (a bit of a sketchy city), so from there we caught a bus to Melacca, a small town on the West Coast. As in most Malaysian cities, the culture is a collection of Chinese, Malay, and Muslim. We stayed at a guesthouse just outside of Chinatown in hopes of being closer to some of the New year festivities. The owner was a very kind and friendly Chinese-Malaysian. He insisted on taking everyone from the hostel out at...

Dec 8, 2007 - Melaka, Malaysia...How could I forget?

Huh, I'm sitting here, looking at my trip journal and realize that I've forgotten a whole city, and a beautiful city at that. So now I'll try and recall. I've already sent the pictures home with Mike, but I think the best of them are on facebook. My arrival was even memorable, even though I'de rather forget. Having spent the day with Joona in Kuantan, I decided it would be a good idea to take the night bus to Melaka. I figured I'de arrive at 7am, having slept on the bus, and be ready for a good day of exploring. Wrong again! I arrived at...

Nov 5, 2007 - Quick visit to Melaka

We've just got back from Melaka in Malaysia, which was lovely! We drove across the bridge from Singapore and it took about 3 hours to get there. The town is lovely - very nice and friendly. We had a ride in a tri-shaw - it's a sort of bicycle with a side car - with two of us to one tri-shaw. Each one is differently decorated with windmills, flowers, tinsel, all sorts - some even have music playing or are shaped like a bird or a boat at the front! We had a guide who said his name was Ganasen, and his friend, and they took us around China...
