Apr 18, 2008 - Tikit Barat - The Flamenco Music Of Malaysia?

I just remembered one of the coolest cultural events we experienced thus far -- last Friday night on the Perhentian Islands (Malaysia), some locals at our restaurant put on an impromptu Tikit Barat performance, complete with drumming/singing/chanting circle, burning bonfire/pyre inferno, and child dancers (including Asha in her improvised headscarf - she wanted to wear one like all the local women!). It's a local music genre in northeast Malaysia, with mainly percussion (hand drums, clapping), and voice (male and female). Singing akin to...

Oct 30, 2007 - Taman Nagara National Park

The trip from Cherating to Taman Negara National Park was quite an adventure in itself. We left today at 9am, changed buses four times and arrived at our destination a little after 7pm. On the last bus journey, we met a pleasant Canadian couple that are traveling SE Asia for about six weeks and today is day number 4. Over dinner and breakfast the next day we had a good time sharing various travel stories. We mainly came to Taman Negara to walk over the 530 meter long suspension bridge (40 meters high). We hit the bridge first thing but I...

Oct 17, 2007 - Kota Bahru

Kota Bahru is known for its morning market, so we decided to stay for a couple of days to check it out. As we soon discovered, the morning market was very traditional. As we were walking up to the building, a truck off loaded a whole cow that had been skinned and quartered only a few hours before. I mean 'off loaded' as in, dumped onto the sidewalk. I have pictures, but decided that they might be too graphic for loading onto the website. The vendors sold every imaginable fruit, vegetable and sweets. It was great just to sit back and watch...

Jul 30, 2007 - Back On The Road!

Hello again It feels like a long time since we sat in an Asian internet cafe and wrote an update for our website. Nearly 3 months in fact. As you know our last update was in May explaining that our trip was on hold and we were back in Scotland due to the fact that my Dad was very unwell in hospital. Well a lot has happened since then and I'm very sad to report that after a very tough fight my dad passed away on the 8th July in Falkirk Infirmary. So with a heavy heart but an absolute determination to continue as we know it is what Dad would...

Jun 22, 2007 - Taman Negara, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Tioman, Singapore

Taman Negara, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Tioman, Singapore Hello Everyone!! We took a boat down the river through untouched sections of Taman Negara to the bus station where we headed North to Pulau Perhentian islands. Once in Pulau Perhentian we stayed at an area called long beach with white sand, coral reefs and jungle covering the rest of the island. We basically laid around on the beach for 4 out of 5 of the days that we were there. On the one day we left the beach we went on a snorkeling trip around the two main islands where we swam with...

Apr 18, 2007 - Taman Negara - the jungle

Hello We left the lovely cool climate of the highlands, and chris who was moving on to Thailand, and swapped it for the hot, steamy interior of the jungle! And man it was hot, we lost a few pints of sweat just looking for a place to stay! We met a couple of people on the bus on the way over so spent most of our time with them, which was nice. There was Mat and Leanne who were travelling down SE Asia and Martin who was also going up like us. We all set out the first morning to do the canopy walk, a suspended bridge, over a 40m canyon! When...

Apr 15, 2007 - Kota Baharu

A quick night stop over in Kota Baharu after another lonnnnng day crossing borders from Thailand...after 10 hours of driving, and lugging our packs through the border from southern Thailand, we arrived in Malaysia. We could immediately see that Malaysia is a lot more developed than Thailand...the quantity of western fast food chains was shocking - within one block was McDonalds, KFC, A&W, Pizza Hut, and Seven Eleven...however, prices are about 1/3rd of that back home, so we knew we were still in Asia! Arriving into Kota Baharu, we were so...

Jan 10, 2007 - Cameron Highlands

Selamat from Malaysia! Last week we left off at the unforgettable Pangkor Laut Resort (here's the link to the archives). This week we finish our incredible trip to Malaysia by going into the highlands and experiencing an entirely different side of the country. If you're interested in coming, bring a sweater -- it gets chilly up here. Don't worry if you're in a hurry or have ADD; there's a 2-minute Johnny Jet video at the end of this week's story (it's on YouTube, so it takes only a second to load). Also, be sure to check out my sister...

Oct 7, 2006 - Back to the Jungle

We left KL on Monday afternoon and headed back to Taman Negara. We arrived in Jerantut at about 7 and met some friends of Asri's from Taman Negara for dinner. We got back to Kuala Tahan (Taman Negara HQ)in the early hours of the morning after we had gone to a karoake bar (I didn't sing you'd be pleased to know ;-)). On Tuesday we walked Bukit Teserik again, but actually completed it, and went to the second viewpoint where you can see the highest mountain in Peninsula Malaysia. The group of us from the previous night then decided to spend...

Sep 23, 2006 - The oldest rainforest in the world

It's been a while, and I have only a short time to update this, so I'll try and be quick! Ok, on Friday after my last entry I got a taxi to the bus station at 7.30am to get the bus to Temerloh at 8am. I then had a 3 and a half hour journey to Temerloh where I had to catch another bus to Jerantut. From Jerantut I had to catch a taxi to Kuala Temberling, where I could get the riverbus to the camp I planned to stay at in Taman Negara. As I was in the taxi to K.Temberling, some monkeys ran across the road, but there wasn't a sign to warn you...
