Oct 8, 2018 - Skopje, Macedonia

On the way to Skopje we stopped at Tetovo to visit the city’s unique Arena Dzamija, an ancient mosque decorated with bright floral paintings. Floral paintings are acceptable in mosques, but human pictures are not. Skopje, capital of Macedonia, is a city of statues, impressive state buildings, a castle, a large ornate city center with a stone bridge built in 15th century, a pedestrian mall leading into an Ottoman Old Bazaar market, and much more. It was where Mother Teresa was borne and called home. It is hard to describe all we saw and did...

Aug 9, 2018 - 29th July

Dear all, Well on the catch up again today. We have a few free hours and free wifi so will try and catch the map up. On Sunday 29th, we moved on from Sofia in Bulgaria and on to Macedonia. This is a poor country. The country is lovely but the people are poor. It wail take another generation for the countries to recover from the communist dictators. We are still having a great time. We cross the border from country to country each day and that is an experience in itself. Will explain in another blog. Kind regards, Dianne and Paul

Our Big Trip

May 23, 2018 - Skopje

Rather than take multi-lane motorways to Skopje we decided on secondary roads which allowed us to travel through farmlands and small villages. The roads were generally very good but sometimes a little too narrow for comfort. A truck roll-over at one point did make things a little tight. Shtip and Strumica were particularly interesting where we encountered numerous horse drawn carts and lots of extremely old roads and houses. We had our first stork sighting along the way. Our arrival into Skopje was slightly marred by gipsy windscreen...

A walk about the town before breakfast the town is very quite of a early morning (7:00) a couple places open for coffee and a couple men sweeping the sidewalks, back to hotel get a cup of coffee and some breakfast then back to my room and packed my bags then off walking to the bus station. I get my ticket on the bus as we are heading out of Prizren a little rain as we head toward the border, a few quick stops then border crossing very quick leaving Kosovo, but a longer wait at the Macedonia side was a small bus in front of us that two...

Nov 15, 2014 - Tourist in Skopje

Today I played tourist. I knew nothing about Macedonia prior to arriving here. I had been unable to find an eBook about Macedonia. All I had been able to do was look up Macedonia on the Internet. And, we all know how accurate information on the Internet is! There are no tour buses, at least none that I could find. I don't think Skopje is a big tourist area. I certainly haven't seen any tourists, even at my hotel. Plus, if they have a tourist season, November isn't part of it! When you don't know your way around a city, sometimes the best...

Balkans 2014

Nov 14, 2014 - Bus to Macedonia

Today's project was to travel to Macedonia. Yesterday, I had purchased a bus ticket from Sofia (Bulgaria) to Skopje (Macedonia) for the 7am trip. I had also purchased at metro ticket in order to reach the bus station quickly. I left my hotel at 6:30am. Knowing that no one would be up at that hour, I had previously agreed to leave my keys in my room when I left. I walked to the metro station and attempted to scan my ticket. Not accepted. I tried two other turnstiles; still rejected. I showed my ticket to the woman in the booth. I could not...

Balkans 2014

May 20, 2014 - Disbelief turns to dismay

My morning gets off to a bit of a boring start, as I set off to find the bus station and check the timetables for my onward trips to Ohrid and Pristina. I'm finding Macedonia harder work than the preceding countries. For one, there's very little that isn't written in cyrillic, even less that is in English. The key words I had learnt by the time I left Serbia aren't helping me here either, and I struggle to make sense of the signs in the station. I eventually figure out enough to know there will be a bus for Ohrid at 1pm. Good enough for...

May 19, 2014 - New depths to surreal

Flying back out of Belgrade, I'm slightly bemused by the "retro" departures board in the international flights hall. If it ain't broken, I guess... Who needs fancy computerised displays? Landing in Skopje, I'm not expecting any similarities with any of the countries I've already passed through. I know too that the bits of Serbian/Croatian I've picked up so far won't necessarily help me with the Macedonian language. Although Macedonian is written using cyrillic, so I'm glad to have had the chance to brush up on that while I was in Belgrade....

Jul 15, 2013 - Macedonia

Macedonia 6-11th July Left Ioannina on a great, nearly empty, motorway that wound through the Pindos and Zagorian mountains via a dramatic series of tunnels and elevated sections. Moved across the border no problem, once we had found it! The complexities of Balkan politics seem to raise their heads at regular intervals. In this case Greece does not like Macedonia being called macedonia, as they have their own macedonian province (just across the border from Macedonia). They also feel that all of the 'macedonian' part of Macedonia should...

Jan 21, 2011 - Skopje - Jan 19-21

January 19, 2011 We were woken up this morning at the border between Serbia and Macedonia at about 5am. We spent about an hour at the borders and once moving again we soon dozed off back to sleep before arriving in just before 7.30am. We were staying with Dave and Sabine who had offered us their spare room after we met them in Ljubljana. We decided to walk to their apartment but the lack or road signs didn’t make it easy! I had to guess which was we needed to leave the station and, thankfully, after asking a local or two, we appeared to be...

Jul 9, 2010 - Skopje und andere Irrwege - Skopje and the Odyssey
