May 25, 2019 - Vilnius

On the way from Klaipeda to Vilnius we stopped at Kretinga Museum. The Klaipeda Manor, which was founded at the end of the 1500th century, is being developed into an attractive museum. Its highlight is the Tiskeviciai Palace with its winter garden. All in all, it is a good place to gather history of Lithuania. In the process of our visit we were able to say hello, to the new president of Lithuania who at the time was not yet been elected the president. We have visited Vilnius in the past on our own, but it was good to have a guide that...

Our trip to Valnius

Oct 31, 2018 - Vilnius, Lithuania

We spent the first two week here in Vilnius resting and enjoying the family. In all we have done little exploring. The weather changed from cool, bright, fall days to wet cooler fall days, so that has limited us from getting out on our own. We did spend one morning walking the streets of Old Town. It is an enjoyable city to be in, clean and old. This morning we were early having ridden to town with the grand kids going to school. We found a warm cafe for coffee with a view of the city and watched the city wake up, with children going to...

Jul 7, 2018 - End of the Tour & a free half day

We say good-bye to our fellow travelers and have the day to ourselves to fill-in gaps in our site seeing - of feeding - as we please. Panorama Hotel Said good-bye to everyone over breakfast. Wandered off to Old Town around 9:45 to go to a museum in the town centre, subject to which one was open ! Sue suggested the Museum of Illusions as something different and so it proved to be. Totally different, fun and educational with lots of helpers around explaining anything we didn’t understand. Off to a nearby modern, simple Italian-style coffee...

Jul 6, 2018 - Vilnius

Lots of baroque churches (Catholic) and had 80,000 Jews, decimated after WWII. We will visit the Jesuit founded university - a centre of the Counter Reformation and source of Lithuanian culture, the cathedral and the Chapel of the Dawn, home to the Black Madonna. The afternoon is free. Panorama Hotel. Late start (07:30 !) and a three hour walk around the Old Town with Egle. We retraced our steps from last night and went into a couple of churches (ABC of Tourism ??!). I made the mistake of telling Lesia the joke about Trump and Mickey Mouse...

Jun 28, 2018 - Welcome to the Lithuania Song Festival!

Lithuanians proudly flaunt their unique heritage and defy the historical yolks of Soviet and German occupation in a week-long frenzy of colorful traditional outfits, dance, song, and delicious foods known as the Lithuanian Song Festival. We couldn’t believe our good fortune when we just happened to plan our visit to Lithuania during this week-long celebration, special enough to earn the UNESCO Oral History and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity title. For anyone eager to learn more about Lithuanian history and traditions, hoping for...

Jun 26, 2018 - Uzupis, an independent country within Vilnius

In 1998, residents of this neighborhood in Vilnius declared themselves an independent country named Uzupis, literally "beyond the river." Surrounded almost entirely by the Vilnia River, the area was historically populated by the Jewish community, who were exterminated during WWII. Marginalized artists, prostitutes, and homeless people squatted in the abandoned buildings, eventually coming together to form a "country" of like-minded residents with their own government, army, flag, currency, stamps, and constitution. Visitors to Vilnius...

Oct 1, 2017 - Vilnius

Free day in Vilnius. This morning climbed the hill up to the Three Crosses and then back down the other side of the hill into Uzupis. Spent the rest of the morning in the Lithuanian Palace (Ethnological) Museum, which was really detailed but involved a lot of reading and I started getting lost with the progression of history In the afternoon I went on an Urban Adventures tour about Soviet times in Lithuania, where we saw some different areas of Vilnius and heard about some different viewpoints about the Soviet occupation. As in most other...

Beijing to Berlin

Sep 30, 2017 - Klaipeda to Vilnius

Left Klaipeda this morning by coach and arrived in Vilnius at about 2pm, and then caught a local bus (with luggage) into the Old Town, closer to our hotel. We did the usual orientation walking tour with our tour leader lasting a couple of hours. It was a good orientation walk, covering a lot of ground. We started at the Cathedral, where there was a marker for the start/finish of the Baltic Chain. We saw Vilnius Palace, the old castle, the Presidential Palace, the town hall and walked through Uzupis - a self proclaimed sovereign state (in...

Beijing to Berlin

Sep 20, 2017 - Vilnius - Capital Of Lithuania

Day 10 - Wednesday 20th September Viv's birthday today so after opening her cards we headed the last 20 miles or so to the border & crossed into Lithuania. The old Immigration & Customs buildings are still there but no need to stop. The only real difference was the fact that the time zone changed. We are now two hours ahead of UK time. The scenery changing slowly with more ups & downs in the road, not really rolling hills just gently undulating. Lots of trees again & signs of lakes. More little mushroom sellers parked along the forest...

The Baltic States

Sep 1, 2017 - Vilnius, Lithuania

I took the four hour bus ride from Riga to Vilnius, Lithuania. The ride sucked because I failed to strategically book my seat. One of the most important strategies for a bus ride is to figure out which direction you are heading and where the sun is. You want to be in the opposite side of the bus so the sun isn't beating down on you and roasting you. I usually like to sit in the front seat of the bus but not on the top deck if you are headed towards the sun. This is what happened and I had the sun beating down on me and it was hotter than...

Jul 1, 2017 - Lithuania 2 The last blog

This is the last installment of this year's 2017 spring trip. We trust that sharing some of the joys of exploring the world has encouraged you to do likewise. We feel privileged to live in Idaho with our wonderful friends and family, but we still like to see what is on the other side of the mountain. Farewell until our next adventure. In the time we spent in Lithuania we visited the Trakai Island Castle built around 1450 and destroyed by the Russians in the 17 century, then rebuilt under Russian rule in 1950. It sits on an island on Lake...
