Jul 7, 2008 - Tubing - Vang Vieng

Hey Again, Well we got to Vang Vieng two days ago and have been having an amazing time since we got here. It was a funny sight when a large group of us arrived here on Friday. Eighteen of us got out of two broken down white vans clad with big backpacks and went searching in a pack from place to place to find a hotel/hostel that could fit our entire group. After 10 minutes of looking we actually found a new place (called Villa Vang Vieng) that had space for us all. It was a pretty nice place; very new and clean. Our first night here was...

Jun 3, 2008 - Tubing down the Nam Song

So we made it to the Lao National Tourist Office (it turns out Saturday was Int'l Children's Day). They gave us some nice brochures for filling out a survey, but they weren't able to answer any of our questions about Luang Namtha. "Go to the tourist office when you get there." We'll just have to wing it. We finished out June 1st with a few more Buddhist Wats and one more massage - Aubrey was broken in half by a girl that looked about fourteen years old. We also tried STINKY dorian fruit. Aubrey insisted on bringing it up to the hotel room,...

May 30, 2008 - Vang Vieng - Laos

So we had a big long blog today, and we do believe it was the best piece of writing ever... not only Pullitzer worthy but very likely Nobel Peace Prize worthy... Unfortunately the nice lady at the internet cafe shut down our computer instead of the one next to us losing the once in a lifetime entry to the power button. so instead if you read the NEXT entry we'll have a brief summary of prevous events and try to keep you, our faithful readers, up to date.

May 8, 2008 - Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a bit like marmite for most people, you love it or you hate it! Its the Khao san of Laos but instead of being a big city its a quiet little town set on the banks of the river. There are tons of reasons people arrive here, but peace and traquility in rural laos isn't one of them. Its party, party, party all the way. Most activities are centred around the river with tubing taking prime position. Its a pretty easy concept to master, you basically rent a large tractor tyre inner, go up river, get into your tube and float!...

My Big Adventure

Apr 28, 2008 - Vang Vieng magic island

Vang Vieng with the magic island. The mountains and 20 caves are beautifull. Especially the great cave... Serious great, like a 15 storages high building. The over famous tubing is ok if you are wasted but for the rest it sucks and is boring. And the people in Vang Vieng are school kids and Lloret de Mar lovers, with with shirts and white sneakers. But ooooh oooh ooh the nature in Vang.

Apr 26, 2008 - Vang Vieng (Karst-Massive)

Apr 8, 2008 - Vang Vieng

The road to Vang Vieng.. Took a bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng with the gorgeous Dublin 3 and a few others from the slowboat...(we now have a facebook group!), from what I had read Vang Vieng is something of a rite of passage when doing South East Asia, its famous for the 'tubing' 'caving' and 'kayaking'...and none of which I had put on the top of my list of things to do on this trip, but as the gang was firmly established I couldn't leave now so decided to go and give it a go! Before the advertised activities of Vang Vieng we had to...

Apr 3, 2008 - Vang Vieng

Greetings again from Laos... We made our way up to Vientiane (the capital of Laos) and spent a few days there taking in the sights. Tanya and I have decided that we must have seen over 1 million Buddha images by now in the form of carvings, statues, paintings or othwise by this time. And Vientiane was overloaded with them in all of the Wats (Temples). We kept heading north and chilled out for a few days on the riverside town of Vang Vieng. Vang Vieng holds everything a backpacker could require: cheap accommodation, beautiful scenery,...

Apr 1, 2008 - Luang Prabang

Seems to have been a little system failure...I did add blurb along with photo's but seems to have been lost...shame as it was some of my best work! So here goes again... Arrived in Pak Beng around 6ish, the trek up the hill was torture so I was prepared to take the first guest house I found regardless of bed bugs..cold showers, whatever I just wanted to dump my bags, have a shower etc - but as luck would have it the first one I came to was lovely - all the essentials clean room, soft bed and was cheap to boot. Pak Beng is a really small...

Mar 19, 2008 - waterfall day

Hi everyone! Yesterday Andrew and I went to a beautiful waterfall and went swimming. At the base there was a tiger and bear rescue sanctuary. Had a great day and in the evening we went out to our favorite spot to eat. They have the best tofu and veggies in coconut and peanut sauce. Had some two for one drinks and a hot toddy because I have a cold. I think its because of all the dust in the air around here. It's getting better. I have been trying to load photos for my site but the first time the computer was shocking me so I stopped loading...

Mar 2, 2008 - Laos - Vang Vieng

We had mixed opinions about Vang Vieng. Mum hated it - said it was like a slightly older version of Schoolies Week. The rest of us didn't mind it, although you could see why people might hate it. The main street was dry & dusty and full of "restaurants" that had big TV screens at the front and rows of seats all lined up facing the TV & everyone just sat like zombies catching up on months of television. We're now up to date on all the latest Simpsons & Family guy episodes =) When people weren't watching TV, they seemed to be mostly drinking....
