Dec 3, 2008 - Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a place I'd heard about long before I arrived. The party capital of Laos is actually set in some very beautiful limestone karst scenery next top the Nam Song river, and its certainly a place that polarises peoples opinions. The town is infamous for an activity known as 'tubing' - take one white westerner, preferably below age 25 and place on an inflated tractor tube on the Nam Song river some 4 k's upstream from the town and by the end of the day you end up with a lobster coloured staggering drunken embarrasement. Don't miss...

Where's Malcolm?

Nov 19, 2008 - Vang Vieng, Laos

So, after an overnight pitstop, we arrived in Vang Vieng, a most untypical Lao town inhabited by the backpacker crowd who lounge, horizontal and spaced out on cushions in the myriad of cafes which offer an unrelenting diet of 'Friends' and 'Cheers' re-runs on big screens whilst serving up "Happy Pizza" laced with various substances such as opium ... weird. Needless to say, we did NOT partake, preferring instead to explore the surrounding countryside which offers the most beautiful limestone karst mountains, and the usual caves and...

Nov 19, 2008 - Vang Vieng

Very sad to say goodbye to laid-back Luang Prabang but the journey must continue south to Vang Vieng. We took a mini-van to Vang Vieng 200km south of Luang Prabang. The route 13 between Luang Prabang and Vientiane used to be one of the most dangerous roads in South East Asia due to the Hmong guerrillas shooting buses passing by. It is also famous for dangerous half-sealed road with very large potholes everywhere which caused two out of five minivans to get a punctured tyre(but luckily not our van). Usually a 200km journey should be no more...

Indochiny 2008

Oct 22, 2008 - Vang Vieng - tubing!

The countryside around Vang Vieng is stunning: khasts (big limestone cliff-rock-things) everywhere! It made the long day in a minibus definitely worth it :). The town itself is very odd - it's a small place, but has many, many bars and restaurants, and nearly all play 'Friends' episodes non-stop on big TVs. We'd come (like all the other involuntarily friends-watching falangs) to tube down the river, because that's what you do here - rent a tube, get taken a few kilometres up the river, and then float back, bouncing from river-side bar to...

Sep 25, 2008 - Return to Vang Vieng

I woke up on the bus at 6am when we reached the Laos border and groggily got up along with everyone else, bought a visa and walked across the border. After waiting around for a while another, smaller and decidedly more rickety bus turned up to take me into town where I was dropped off by a restaurant and told that my bus to Vang Vieng would be along shortly. Out of everyone on the bus only two young Swedish girls were also heading to Vang Vieng but they werent very impressed by the menu at the restaurant and so went for a wander so I sat...

Sep 20, 2008 - Left Vang Vieng for Bangkok

Our coach down into Thailand left at about midday today but as we woke up later than we expected time was short this morning. I changed some currency up and we got some brunch and then we had to head off. We really enjoyed Vang Vieng but if we ever see an episode of Friends again it'll be too soon! It was a really beautiful place though and sooooooooo relaxing and friendly man! We 'were' going to get an overnight train down to Bangkok but aparently the railway in Thailand was flooded so we had to get a bus instead. Or 3 buses to be...

The A&E Adventure

Sep 19, 2008 - T'internet & trying to sort out Oz

We spent most of today on T'internet trying to find ANY hostel/hotel available in Sydney over Crimbo and New Year. What a nightmare!! EVERYWHERE is already booked up. We have found a couple of stinkers available but these are still like triple the normal price and it'll be hard to part with GBP50.00 a night to stay in a mixed dorm!!! After about 6 hours searching we had a beer and some chow in an Australian bar - secretly hoping we might find a nice Aussie to put us up over the yule tide period!! We did actually get chatting to a nice Irish...

Today we mainly spent ALL DAY updating the website and stuff. Oh of course we watched a couple of episodes of Friends for 'a break' but who wouldn't. It's gonna be hard when we leave this place man. It's gonna have to be Friends cold turkey I think. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cold turkey.......... :)

Sep 16, 2008 - Sabaidee from Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is what you would call a backpacker heaven, at least for those backpackers that might be getting tired of travelling and long for home. Guesthouses are cheap, the biggest attraction is to rent an inner tube and float down the river (with stops at the many bars set up on the riverfront) and generally relax. In additon, the city is filled with restaurants selling all kinds of Western food and all playing episodes of Friends. Seriously, it's like no other tv show had existed in the history of television. While here I did do the...

Sep 16, 2008 - TUBING!!!

Vang Vieng is most famous or infamous for tubing as we understand it. For anyone who has never heard of it before tubing is basically a pub crawl on a river in a rubber ring. So when in Vang Vieng....... We got a Tuk Tuk at about midday which took us about 3 miles up river to start the 'tubing'. We were out of our 'tubes' about 30 seconds later at the first bar!!! It was a bit cheesy with loud music and lots of booze but it was still good fun and everyone was in high spirits. I guess there were about 8 bars along the river but I think we...

Sep 15, 2008 - Meandered round Vang Vieng

We wandered up the road for breakfast this morning. I would say "into town" but it's a very small village. What we did notice straight away though was that it is 50/50 with travellers/locals and that every other shop is a bar/restaurant playing non-stop 'Friends'. It is really chilled out place and very friendly though. After breakfast we had a couple of cool ones and watched some Friends, then went across the road and had a couple more beers while watching non-stop 'Family Guy'!. Later that afternoon we went across the river on a little...
