Sep 27, 2018 - Day 14 - Day trip to the Dolomites

Chiara recommended that we visit the Dolomites if we had lime while we're away. Today's the day. We had to be up reasonably early so we could walk to meet our driver at Piazzale Roma at 8:30. Surprise, surprise, Riley had left over pasta for breakfast before we got under way. Sarah once again took the tour leader role and made sure we arrived at the meeting point with plenty of time. It's another sunny day however we all dressed in layers as we were told it would be cool up in the mountains. We met our fellow travellers, 2 Australians and...

Sep 26, 2018 - Day 13 - Venice and walking tour

We have a walking organised for today however it doesn't start until 4:30 so we decided to have a lazy morning. I popped to the supermarket to get the makings for pasta sauce to have when we return from the tour. We still had half the packet of pasta we bought on the farm so didn't need to buy pasta. Both kids decided mushrooms for breakfast might be nice so I bought extras...some for pasta, some for breakfast. I cooked the pasta sauce so we could dish up dinner fairly quickly when we returned from the tour. Brekkie over, we sent off to...

Sep 25, 2018 - Day 12 - Florence to Venice

Time to pack up for the next leg of our journey. The train to Venice didn't leave until 11:30 and we had until 10:00am to vacate our accommodation so I let the kids sleep late and then we breakfasted and finished packing up before leaving at 10. We were sad to say goodbye to our little apartment. It was very cosy and suited us well. We stopped at the local market in the square not far from the apartment and Riley and I bought a couple of souvenirs from a local craftsman. We were both happy with our purchases. We made sure our journey took...

Sep 14, 2018 - Verona

Over the bridge in Venice and onto the train and there was Antonio waiting for us with our bus to go on to our last destination, Stresa. But…. First we would make a stop in Verona, as we continued to head north to the lakes region of Italy. Verona is the location of Shakespeare’s story of Romeo and Juliet. And the town of Verona definitely takes advantage of that from a tourist perspective. There is Juliet’s house and the balcony where she stood and a bronze statue of her in the courtyard of her home under the balcony. Of course, you do...

Sep 13, 2018 - Venice or Venezia

Our full day in Venice was EXTREMELY full. We gathered early in the lobby of our hotel after breakfast and then headed to our personal water taxi for a trip to Murano Island. It was quite foggy that morning, but in its own way, it made the trip more enchanting. Murano Island is known for glass blowing. After a demonstration, we were shown some of the studio’s signature pieces and then browsed the showroom. Many of the tea and coffee sets included gold as part of the glass and were just beautiful. I did see a very modern blown glass burro...

Sep 10, 2018 - Venice Day 2

After a good nights sleep, we slept in and almost missed breakfast. Our plans for today included a three hour walking tour, followed by a water taxi tour of many of the canals around Venice. Cathy arranged the tour, and it was wonderful. Our tour guide was absolutely delightful. She showed us many historical places, and history here means many centuries . We had a pistachio gelato this afternoon, which apparently is the best anywhere. It was indeed delicious. Tom and I ventured back to the hotel to escape the mid-afternoon heat; you can...

Sep 9, 2018 - First day in Italy

We flew from Toronto to Venice, Italy last night. It was an eight hour flight overnight, and we hardly slept a wink. We are traveling with Glenna’s sister Cathy and her husband Chris, and friends Liz and Tom. We took several exploratory walks to get our bearings straight and plan for tomorrow’s sightseeing. We are staying at Hotel Ala, which is a short walk from Saint Marco Square. It is a nice hotel. We really enjoyed our walks. What a neat city. No cars or bicycles, just walking or boat taxis. The city is made up of 181 islands of...

Aug 22, 2018 - Full day in Venice

Dear all, Well Monday morning dawned too early but rather bright. Off early again through the narrow cobblestone streets to the lagoon then on to a boat to go to the Murano Island to watch the glass blowing. I am always fascinated by their technic and skill. Soon the master was blowing a piece of hot molten into a vase with decoration and handles. Then he made a horse by pullin the molten blob in shape. Of course we were led into to show and sales room. The water glasses, jugs, animals and anything else you can think of was displayed and...

Our Big Trip

Aug 21, 2018 - 19/20 August

Dear all, Well a day has passed since I started this blog. Travelling is such hard work! We always seem to be in and out of the coach or doing a walking tour. The problem is that I am not loosing weight as my feet and legs are caring lots of fluid. Will need a couple of days of feet up when we get back. No use going on about it. We drove from Vienna it Venice on Sunday. It was a beautiful drive of mountains, hills with villages in the valleys and as we got closer to Venice there were vineyards on the hills. We got into Venice about 5pm and...

Our Big Trip

Aug 10, 2018 - Burano

Monday 6 August Having completed some another trip for fuel and some provisioning we set off in the afternoon for Burano. It was a bit a hard slog as we are pretty certain the growth hasn’t “fallen” off the hull and that the prop is fouled. On the way we saw a fuelling station – trying to get close to it to see the price we spectacularly ran aground. We weren’t moving. Thankfully two guys in a powerful rib saw our dilemma and got us off the mud/weed. Ever so grateful. Even though it was a rising tide (a couple of feet) we’re sure it...

Aug 7, 2018 - More Venice

Friday 27 – Sunday 5 August Have spent time exploring Venice – it’s great. Also completing vital maintenance – the elbow is proving tricky – no matter how much welding he completes there’s still some little holes which is not good. After two days the elbow is back in and there are still some little holes in it but at least it’s not leaking water. We’ve made some interesting discoveries whilst on the marina – we have all sorts of growth attaching itself to the hull – some weed as long as a metre has grown. Relatively easy to get off if you...

Aug 2, 2018 - Wonderful Venice

Thursday 5 – Monday 9 July Spent time wandering around Venice – each day a different quarter. Each quarter has it’s own appeal architecturally and atmospherically. We’ve had some pretty impressive thunderstorms most evenings. The days have been really hot and very little if any wind – very tiring. It’s a bit of a trek to the vaporetto station but at least there is a bar to enjoy either a cold beer or campari spritzer in the shade on the way to or back to the pontoon. As we have a fair bit of maintenance like changing oil filters etc to...
