May 30, 2018 - Pisa

Wednesday 30th May: A day in Pisa. On previous trips we had avoided Pisa but this time we decided to go for the day. We walked to the train station about 1km away. The regional trains are fast and, with a quick change in Empoli, we arrived in Pisa about 11.00am and walked up through town to The Field of Miracles stopping for a coffee on the way. It was a grey day with rain expected but that did not deter the crowds and the white and pale grey marble of the Cathedral, Tower, Baptistery and Camposanto stood out magnificently in their sea of...

Feb 17, 2018 - Pisa

The return ferry ride from Elba to the mainland was smooth as silk and as soon as we disembarked we headed for the hills. Those hills being any around the Pisa area with old hilltop towns and there were plenty. Volterra was one of the big ones but by accident we came across Massa Marittima and it was fantastic. They all have fascinating similarities but some have something special, MM was one of those. So we lingered longer, and had a coffee, or two. We decided to base ourselves for a few days in an area dating back to the 1st Century and...

Oct 2, 2017 - Florence to Pisa

What to say about Pisa? I should have insisted I could climb the tower! The bus trip there went through more of the very, very flat land seen from Venice to Florence. Deltas or flood plains? Rich alluvial soil. In this section there were lots of plant nurseries, especially trees, as well as farms. When i bought my ticket i had remarked that if i could have a breathing space every now and then on the way up I could make it up the tower. The ticket seller replied that with big crowds it is a constant movement; you cant stop! He didnt think...

Jul 20, 2017 - Days 17 and 18

Yesterday was an unteresting day. We had three lectures and then after lunch we went to the hospital portion of the university and applied x-rays and CT scans to some of the bones. Sadly nothing cool came up and of course the one clavical theh grabbed from my skeleton was the wrong one. It was still cool getting to watch them use the big machines. I would have love to volunteer as tribute as a living skelton but they like the dead ones better. They said and i quote "the living ones aren`t good at following directions." All I can say is Wow....

Jul 14, 2017 - Day 11 and 12

I can't believe how fast this trip has gone. I have one week left in Pisa! So yesterday we did a lot of paper work and I made a lot of progress on my skull. The paper work we have been working on is figuring out if our skeletons have dental diseases or pathological diseases of any kind. Since mine is young he only has enamel hypoplasia. I literal feel like a dentist when I'm picking dirt out of his teeth. It's so cool. I will take a pic of the tools and have someone take a picture of me cleaning his teeth. HaHa. Our lectures yesterday were...

Jul 12, 2017 - Day 10

Ok so today was not my favorite day. All we did was work on paper work. Literally I have a stack of paperwork like I'm running a company. It's all on sex and age determination and dental work. That's not even the half of it. We have to do all that paper work for the other so skeletons as well. So the amount of paper work triples. Such a long day but the week has gone so fast. We literally have 10 days left of work!!!! Where did the time go? We are all wondering what will happen if we don't finish?

Hey guys so today we continued go work on sex determination for the other skeletons and I managed go finish that today. I feel so behind its not even funny. Following the schecule we appear to be right on time with things but the feeling must be a matter of me comparing my knowledge to everyone else. O WELL. I have archeological knowledge that I cn share if they need it. Our lectures aare getting longer and its getting harder to focus. All I want to do i get my skeleton complete. I was totally on a roll today and then lecture came and I...

Hey guys sorry I didn't blog Saturday or Sunday, I was in Cinque Terre and yesterday I caught up on sleep. Anyway catch you up. Had an amazing trip to Cinque Terra. Got to see lots of cool things and even got to go swimming in the Mediterranean sea. It was cold but the amount of salt helps with the floating. For those who visit Italy, I'd be happy to take you to visit. As far as Sunday all I did was sleep and watch some movies. Not very productive but it did not prepare me for today! Today we had three lectures and did a lot with the bone....

Hey guys so today was a very productive day for me. I finished puttkng my pelvis together and started labeling. After break we had a lecture on how to determine gender. So after going through the check list of things I needed to use to determine my gender I was able to come out with a young male in his early to late teens. Fof lunch today I had cafeteria food and for once I felt like they weren't trying to kill me with it... pesto gnocchi. After lunch we worked on...

Jul 6, 2017 - Third and fourth day

Sorry I didn't not update yesterday, I was so tired from not being able to sleep. So yesterday I began working on my vertebrae and we had lectures on parts on the skeleton. By the end of day yesterday I had half of my vertebrae done and so badly wanted to see my skull. We got to see the skeleton of a baby. It was so tiny and so breakable. Today I finished my vertebrae and was told to start my skull. It was so cool. I found a jaw and lots of teeth. Today we went over metabolic diseases. After that we had to start putting our pelvis together....
