Sep 15, 2016 - Pisa

Well this will be short and sweet. The day started out well, we walked the the main train station via the post office and managed to buy our tickets to Pisa using an automatic machine. So far so good. Found the platform, boarded the train and we were on the way feeling quiet pleased with ourselves, until the guard came along to check our tickets. We hadn't validated them and so were fined €10. Oh well you live and learn. Arrived in Pisa, bought the bus tickets to and from the tower, went outside the station to be met by thunderstorms and...

The Three of Us

Sep 14, 2016 - Ferrari day

Today is the day Max has been waiting for, his drive in a Ferrari. We decided not to dok it until the afternoon as by all reports the Pizzale Michaelangelo, from where we had,to leave is the highest Piazza in Florence and from there you can watch themost amazing sunset over the city. Spent the morning doing the washing and Max and I went for a walk to the post officeand to pick up fresh bread. Felt like we were living like Italian. Came back to the apartment and Skyped the kids which was lovely as we miss them all, big and little. It was...

Sep 13, 2016 - Day 2 Florence

Well I have had 2 glasses of wine so anythIng could happen here. We were out of the apartment by 9 am and headed to Uffizi Gallery only to find out there would be a two hour wait so we booked tickets for later in the day, one to save time and two to skip the line. So instead we headed off to the Duomo where we also paid for a guided tour to skip the line and entered within a few minutes which was probably not worth what we paid but it got us through which was the main aim. Our guide explained because it two hundred years to build, it is...

The Three of Us

Sep 12, 2016 - Day 1 Florence

None of us slept very well last night so it was a bit of a slow start this morning. The stage we saw being set up last night had live music until nearly midnight and then the crowds walked back past our window. Although we are on the third floor the sound travels through the streets. Then they decided to play soccer in the street at two this morning. The apartment does not have airconditioning and because it was so warm we had our window open and shutters closed but it didn't stop the noise. Anyway after a late breakfast we started walking...

Sep 11, 2016 - Rome - Florence

Today we said gòodbye to Rome and hello Florence. The train trip was painless travelling at 250klm per hour gets you there very quickly. We decided to get a Taxi from the station as iT was hot and se didn't feel like dragging our cases over the cobblestones. After waiting about 20 minutes in the queue we were off. I made Max sit in the front as I found it quite scarey driving on the wrong side of the road in a position where you feel you should have control of the car. We arrived at the apartment but were earlier than we thought we would be...

The Three of Us

Jul 1, 2016 - Florence

So yesterday you thought, how could they go to Florence and not see "David". Yes we thought the same thing too. So we got up early and headed to Florence to beat the line up at the Museum to see David. Apparently a lot of others thought the same thing to. The line up was only 1.5 hours to get in, but at least if you go in the morning you are in the shade and it hasn't warmed up into the 30 degree weather yet. So we made it to the statue. It was pretty impressive. We took lots of photos and then enjoyed the other works of art. Then back out...

Jul 1, 2016 - Contrada Dinner and Trial Race

Once we were ready we headed downstairs to meet up with Luisa uncle from next door, Giam Piero. We got into Giam Piero's vehicle and he drove to Sienna. We finally got to experience "Italian" driving from the other side. Giam Piero drove just like we had observed on the roadway. Heavy on the gas and very fluid. It is amazing how they make it look easy but it sure works well. Let just say I can laugh about it now, cause we lived to tell about it. Once in Sienna we picked up Luisa from work. Luisa works at the university and does research on...

Jun 30, 2016 - Florence

Today was about Florence (Firenze). We headed straight away to Florence this morning. We parked right in the Centre Market and walked to the Museum where David is. The line up was at least 1 1/2 hour long. So we headed down the street to the Piazza della Santissima Annunciate which is named after the church of the Annunziata at the head of the square. In the center of the piazza is the bronze Equestrian statue of Ferdinando I and two Mannerist fountains with fantastical figures, all works completed by the late-Renaissance sculptor Pietro...

Jun 3, 2016 - Florence

This will be the 2nd of 3 consecutive 6am risings... Seven in our group today. No "tendering" required as Livorno, the port city serving the area had adequate docking facilities albeit about 90km from Florence (Firenze). This was one of two tours that Rose arranged and our travel mates were Kelly and Greg from NFLD and Wes, Barb, and their 25 year old mining engineer daughter Chelsea from Colorado. Rose met all these people virutally through Cruise Critic Roll Call and Facebook. All great people. Our tour guide was waiting for us at the...

May 26, 2016 - Florence

Haven’t written in a few days. We’ve been busy. We arrived in Pienza and found the agriturismo right out of the main village. Definitely in the country. It was beautiful, the room, apartment was lovely, separate bedroom, very nice and roomy. Large piece of land, they make there own wine and I think olive oil also. The room was filled with “you can buy this.” Big beautiful pool with a view that was amazing. We went outside to walk the grounds, and it hit. There was a scent that knocked your socks off, and it wasn’t pleasant. The wind...

Italy revisited 2016

May 12, 2016 - Florence, Italy

Rented a car to take in both Florence and Pisa - would not recommend renting unless the GPS is onboard.... Handheld just doesn't cut it. Tower was really cool to see up close. Looking at it from a distance doesn't do it justice. Florence was very pretty and to date my best eating experience!!

May 8, 2016 - Day 16: Florence highlights

Woke up ready to take on Rome and then realized I was a day behind schedule. It was actually our day to go to Florence! I guess after a while days blend together and no I can't remember everything 𯘊 Pulled everyone together and left for Florence. Visited Galleria Dell Accademia to see Michelangelo's David. I'm usually not a fan of statues but David is impressive. I was surprised to see street bazaars in Florence. Another surprise was realizing how many people can actually speak our language there. Funny that we were worried about finding...
