Oct 19, 2014 - Ragusa

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Italy chapter on Sicily has to say about Ragusa: “Like a grand old dame, Ragusa is a dignified and well-aged provincial town largely overlooked by tourists. Like every other town in the region, Ragusa collapsed after the 1693 earthquake; a new town called Ragusa Superiore was built on a high plateau above the original settlement. But the old aristocracy were loathe to leave their tottering palazzi and rebuilt Ragusa Ibla on the original site. The two towns were only merged in 1927....

Jul 30, 2014 - 180 degrees and beyond

I've found that it's best to get on the road by 7:00 and cover some distance when it's cooler and there are fewer vehicles whizzing by. Pamela was so sweet to oblige my early schedule and even made delicious lemon granita. From the heights of Modica, it was an easy drop and rise to Ragusa, the last baroque gem of the triangle. The Duomo and blue domed church were especially impressive (see photo). From Ragusa, I headed back to the coast along an empty and plunging rural road, which took me by an elegant castle and estates with stone...

May 8, 2014 - Ragusa

There was no rush this morning as we packed, had breakfast in the hotel and checked out by 0930hrs. Our objective was Ragusa, 65 km from Ortigia. While I set up the GeePS correctly and was in no great rush to be anywhere, I forgot to check the travel time. Limestone and good soil compete with each other and at this time of the year everything is green. Vegetation is...

Oct 5, 2005 - Busking in Ragusa

...well, we aren't busking but there is a busker's festival starting today. We left Syracusa having stayed over 2 weeks. We'd recommend it as a good place to visit and to stay. I think we would have benefited from hiring a car for a couple of days, but I chickened out, and Steve doesn't drive. We just enjoyed living somewhere so full of life, and pottering. On Monday we set off to Ragusa, without having sorted anywhere to stay. The bus journey was more gruelling than we expected, being nearly 3 hours rather than the just over 2 we...

May 27, 2005 - Siracusa (Syracuse)

Have made it to another point in Sicily and have already had a good wander this afternoon. Another beautiful day! Met a nice couple from England on the train (she originally from Croatia) and then introduced myself to some Aussies at the train station and we have ended up staying at the same hotel. My 'window' looks out onto the stairwell - so we wont be getting many photos of that view! However it is only 20 euros a night (he originally wanted 30) so no complaints from me. Is lovely and clean also. I was 5 nights in a row in my tent in...
