Oct 15, 2018 - San Remo on the Italian Riviera

I am fortunate that Shelia, one of the English speaking friends from Mondovi, decided to accompany me on this part of my trip, Three nights in San Remo. Shelia married an Italian man and now lives near her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, having made Italy her home. After our aperitif and then return to our nearby hotel for a rest we wandered into the shopping district of San Remo, stopped for a drink near the old port, got lost wandering back to the hotel, but still arrived in time for a wonderful dinner in the hotel Ristorante.

Oct 12, 2018 - Mondovi: Pizza and Vineyard

The weather was just perfect on this my second visit to Mondovi. I was able to see so much more. My new friends helped with driving me to places I might not have gotten too. I discovered the wonderful leather bag booth at the Cueno market, and visiting a beautiful Italian wine vineyard. Now I will be taking a train due south then west toward the French boarder, to the Italian Riviera on the Mediterranean coast.

Oct 11, 2018 - The Ancient Wall Around Mondovi, Italy

Yesterday as I was making my way up the hill to the hilltop main area, called the Pazza Maggiore, I noticed a historical marker sign with English and Italian. I learned this is where I could turn off to wall around the ancient wall of Mondovi. Mondovi was fiirst founded in 1198 and had their first printing press in 1472. Imagine all this before my country, North America, was even discovered by Columbus! By 1537 it was claimed by France and was the largest city in the area.

Oct 9, 2018 - Cuneo, Italy and Market Day Shopping

Today Anna invited me and two other ladies to drive to Cueno for the big market day there. Cueno is about 30 minutes away from Mondovi. It is a little larger then Mondovi with a very large piazza (square) that is chock full of market booths on this Tuesday of the month. We especiall went to visit the Italian leather bag booth. How wonderful. All bags are displayed in heaps inside paper shopping bags and all cost only 20 euros. I hate to even mention the price, because these are reall fine stamped on the leather made in Italy and genuine...

Oct 5, 2018 - Ancient, Beautiful, Friendly Mondovi, Italy

These pictures tell it all. This part of Italy is not so busy, not so over developed. Everyone says Bonjourno on passing. I haven’t heard a horn honk yet. The air seems fresh, and there is an aboundane of fresh produce, whole grain breads, and of course delicious gelato. Most speak at least a little English. People set on ancient benches in the Piazza visiting, or taking a mid morning espresso cafe” or as I did this afternoon a preseco on little tables under age old brick arches and cobblestone sidewalks. Life is so good here. And also a...

Oct 3, 2018 - Fossano, Italy

Today Jane, who has a car drove Shelia and me to Fossano, about 23 km away to visit a street market. It was a beautiful, blue sky day, About 65 degrees. We enjoyed browsing the market, I bought 2 scarves and a needed pair of socks. Before we left we took a walk on the promenade around part of the town. Fossana was founded in 1236 as one of many hilltop cities in Italy.

Oct 2, 2018 - Mondovi, Italy

I’m back in Mondovi, Italy. House setting in a lovely refurbished villa about a half mile from the ancient (piazza) hilltop city. I was here in February and it was a very snowy trip. So it is very nice to be back in pretty, green and warmer weather. I’m enjoying produce from the villa (grapes, figs, apples and tomatoes) and from the farmers market in town. Today I walked up the steep incline into the Piazza and took the funicular down to the business area to the farmers market. And also to meet up with some old friends from my last trip,...

Sep 29, 2018 - Terento

Given the fun during our previous night's stay Terrento in the Dolomites was quite sedate but understandable given its farmland location. Peaceful and quiet it definitely was. Not so the drive on through the Italian Alps and into Austria. It was a slow day in very heavy traffic but once again the roads were made for bikes and the scenery was spectacular. The South Tyrol towns of Bolzano and Merano were considered for coffee stops but both were so heavily congested we moved on. That area apparently remains dedicated to full independence...

Sep 27, 2018 - Paestum

We left Volcano on a different ferry than planned. Rough seas and it couldn't go into several of the islands. We did not have a graceful boarding but it was a bit better than the boarding at Stromboli. However the sailing was hairy on the hydrofoil. We were under water more often than what we were comfortable with. After about 5 minutes Fred half jokingly said he was going to put on his life jacket. I told him that if he saw the crew with theirs on, it might be a good idea. Once we were back on solid ground we reunited with our Sicilian bus...

Sep 23, 2018 - Stromboli

Had a nice driving tour around Lipari, a huge lunch and then boarded a hydrofoil to Stromboli. Kind of sad to be leaving Lipari, it is a gem. Beautiful black sand beaches here on Stromboli with calm seas. I think we can endure the hardships of life here. Had a terrific evening. We ate at an outdoor pizzeria under a full moon and intermittent eruptions of the Stromboli volcano. We were like kids at a candy store when we saw the flames.

Sep 22, 2018 - Stage 29 Viterbo to Monterosi

Overview/ Highlights We thought it was going to be a flattish day but how wrong we were. Took quite awhile to find our way out of the old town and onto the Via Francigena route. Then it was up up up. We were not on main roads very much and the little back roads took us through areas with expensive country houses and tiny roads that when sharply up and down all the time. A local advised us not to follow the route at one point as it was a horrible road, so we made our way on other back roads which continued the steep short climbs! By the time...

Sep 21, 2018 - Lapari

Got up super early and drove 1 1/2 hours to Milazzo to catch the ferry to Lipari. Back to island life for us. The gizmo that transfers pictures from our camera SD cards to the tablet has quit so the pictures that we now are uploading are from the phone only. Saturday - 4 museums and then the rest of the day at leisure.
