Jul 16, 2018 - Sestri Levante

16 July 2018 All slept well and met for breakfast at 7.30am. This is included in our accommodation, and a very nice set up, which we all enjoyed. Met in the lobby a little later and discussed what we might do for the day. The weather was dull and we were told to expect a few showers. Decided to just stay around Sestri Levante, so set off for a walk along the sea front. Plenty heading to the beach, which is so different to home. They are quite happy to sit or lay on the rocky beach. They probably don't like our sandy beaches either. Enjoyed...

Jul 15, 2018 - Santa Margherita Ligure

Ok!!! I’ve been totally relaxing for the last five days!! Sorry no blog.. the town of Santa Margherita Ligure is so beautiful and laid back!! Really a seaside resort village!! Amazing. The hotel is Devine, with its own private beach, terrace, landscaped gardens and a silver service restaurant like it’s out of “are you being served” haha our room had it’s own little courtyard with sundeck chairs, umbrellas and table/chairs. So you can image just how relaxed we’ve been !! We walked to the stunning little village of Portifino on Friday about a...

Jul 15, 2018 - Saas Fee to Sestri Levante

15 July 2018 Up early, light breakfast and as we were ready early, Marcel suggested we get the earlier bus from Saas Fee to Brig, and that would eliminate one bus/train change with luggage. Bus to Brig was a good trip, but then we found the train to Italy was running late!! Their excuse was a medical emergency, but as this is a regular thing, we were a bit doubtful. Eventually left Brig 30 minutes late, which meant we missed our next connection in Milano by five minutes. Conflicting reports from the ticket inspector on train and station...

Jul 11, 2018 - Maranello. Pagani, Ferrari and Maserati

Our first full day in Maranello started with breakfast at the Ferrari Village where we are staying before a short drive to see the new Pagani museum and factory. What a change since we were last here 5 years ago. Very impressive. We then drove over to the Enzo Ferrari museum where we had a fabulous lunch before touring the museum and engine display. We then finished the day with a tour of a cheese factory with a Maserati museum attached. Now back in the room with a glass of wine catching up on 10 days of posts.

Jul 10, 2018 - Montpellier to Maranello

Today was a big driving day. We left before 7 and headed towards Cannes where there was a Bentley dealer to hopefully look at the new warning lights and balance the front tires that had developed a bit of a vibration. Ash used all of her school French and got us booked in. We arrived in Cannes at 10:30 and they plugged in the computer and diagnosed a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. They could fix this and the tires but it would take all day, so we had an unexpected day to ourselves in Cannes. After a pleasant lunch we had a wonder...

Jun 30, 2018 - EOFY and end of EOFT (end of fantastic time) in Lecco

Last day in Lecco and I knew I had to pay a visit to Museo di Storia Naturale di Lecco, which features original 19th century display cases and animals stuffed by taxidermist and eventual curator Carlo Vercelloni. It was like nothing had changed; the museum is housed in the old palace Palazzo Belgioioso with peeling frescoes on the ceilings. Once again I was the only visitor and the enthusiastic staff/ volunteers were great characters, very friendly, with physical disabilities and we had a lovely chat despite not having a word of each...

Jun 26, 2018 - "The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” ― Alexander Supertramp Chris McCandless The above quote is a mantra I often return to to motivate me to be less complacent and try new things; sometimes it's something as mundane as a new gym class or a dance, but recently it has been exploring landscapes that I may have been too scared to do on my own. But what if you are stationed in the one place for...

Jun 25, 2018 - 'So it's an old bridge'

"The hotel was just by the bridge and lots of people came to take photos. It is quite a good bridge but nothing special." "This bridge is old, but is run down. The city started work on it, but left it in an unfinished state." "Looks just like a bridge" These are some of the Trip Advisor comments describing Ponte Azzone Visconti, an old bridge - so old in fact that it was built between 1336 and 1338. After now spending nearly a month in Lecco, I decided to find out more about this city's history and why Visconti and Manzoni references are...

Jun 24, 2018 - Sons, daughters and painters

No matter where you travel, and even if you have limited common language, having children can give you a common bond with those you meet. This morning I sought my Italian host's assistance to help translate the text on a poster that has been all over town and after reading it again, today I guessed that it was advertising an exhibition about to finish today. My suspicions were confirmed with Marcella's translations: the Orlando Sorra exhibition closes today! No, I had never heard of him either but, prompted by the advertising, and the...

Jun 23, 2018 - out for a stroll: Monte San Martino

Today was to be my 'catch-up' day, time out to respond to all those work emails and messages from family and have a rest before pondering the next 7 days I have left in Lecco. I had thought to alternate day trips with excursions as there are plenty of places to visit in North Italy that are only an hour or so away, and so very accessible with the affordable Italian public transport system. Seek out the imagined space where Romeo serenaded Juliet in Verona maybe? Or have a parma in Parma (couldn't resist, sorry)? After sitting down for an...

Jun 22, 2018 - moving along further north.....

Tuesday 12 June After visiting the chandlers at the end of the harbour in the old boat yard, we headed out of Brindisi and headed for Monopoli. We were able to go alongside the mole, which had two day tripper boats on it. It was a short walk into the old town which is wonderful (albeit small – you can see everything within an hour at best). The only thing wrong about being on the mole is that there is a constant flow of people – luckily the majority are used to boats therefore don’t gawk into the cockpit etc. Wednesday 13 June Early morning...
