Jun 22, 2018 - Milan - size does matter

With my last house guests gone and eight whole days left in Lecco before heading down under (do they use that term here?) to The Cinque Terre, I embarked on my first day trip, this time to the Milano, capital of Lombardy, and the second most populous city in Italy after Rome, having a population of 1,380,873. That's more than ten times the population of Lecco. Fortunately, the train from Lecco (if you catch the express one) only takes about 39 minutes, so I joined the commuters after farewelling Annie and Carol on their way to Croatia (or...

Malta and Milan 2018

Apr 21, 2018 - Bob's journey continued.

So Betsy and I parted company on Thursday. It was a strange feeling sitting in the airport alone waiting for my flight. I depend on her to help figure things out. I caught my flight from Milan to Frankfurt flying over the Alps. At Frankfurt I got my big bag and got to the train station. It was a long walk but I got to the right platform. I still had some moments of anxiety as I was not completely sure of my train as I hopped on. It was the right one and 2 hours later I was in Gottingen. I traveled here to see my friend Rainer. He and I...

Apr 20, 2018 - I be home

I returned home at 7:00 last night. I spent the long flight and then today thinking back over the trip. I don't consider myself to be a great traveler, but Italy really was a wonderful place to visit. I loved walking all the old streets, and even their doors were beautiful to me. I love it when we wander into places unplanned like the convent and the castle from 1400 that we stayed at. The food was fantastic and the wine was good and cheap! Bob and I talked a lot about how people do vacations differently. There's no one right way. We...

Apr 18, 2018 - Tuesday in Monterosso and meeting crazy guy

Tuesday morning we left Florence and took the train to Monterosso, Cinque Terre. A gorgeous day and a spectacular place! Right on the Ligurian Bay which leads to the Mediterranean Sea. A bit of a rocky start as we were quite sure we could walk half mile with luggage to hotel. Saw quite a few incredulous glances and even an offer of help as we struggled up the wrong path and skipped the easy foot tunnel. Oh well! That was the only time we did that! Lots of people were hiking up cliffs or swimming or shopping but we chose to sit at some of...

Apr 18, 2018 - Hidden Gems

This is Bob writing here. Betsy does all of our hotel bookings. She does the research and then makes the bookings. In the case of our hotel in Florence it was really a last minute addition to the itinerary. So whatever we got was ok as long as there were beds! We checked in and things looked good then we left to see the sights of Florence. We came back late and went to bed. In the morning we went to breakfast. I wondered aloud what this place might have been in a previous life. I said maybe a convent or monastery. There was something about...

Apr 17, 2018 - Sunday dinner in Milan and Monday in Florence

Sunday night we went with Leslie to a great place with an entertaining waiter. He was really after Bob to relax and said dinner should last about 3-4 hours. For the second night in a row we got free lemoncello so we think he had as much fun as we did. Bob went home and I went with Leslie to the laundromat so she would be ready to head back to Stockholm. Words cannot express how good it was to spend time with Leslie. I'm so proud of her and what she's doing and am pleased we could see her in this environment. Will miss her dearly until I see...

Apr 15, 2018 - Saturday in Lake Como

Everyone must go to Lake Como! Leslie, Bob and I took a one hour train ride to Varenna, got our bearings over coffee and treats and walked through many small, stony streets to get to our hotel. Our hostess was a woman with few words, Italian or otherwise, but she had our rooms ready early and for that I am grateful. We set out to explore the delightful little town on the lake and decided to take the ferry to Bellagio, after gelato, across the way. We had lunch there and just enjoyed the scenery. The whole area is absolutely gorgeous! Lots...

Oct 21, 2017 - The last lug!

Our day in Genova was well worth the visit. A big port city, that is where you head off to Cinque Terre. We would have walked that again if time allowed. Maybe the coin tossed in the Trevi fountain in Rome will bring us back to Italy again one day, so we could do the walk then. We spent a few hours at the Maritime museum. 5 floors of interesting history, maps, boats, info about Christopher Colombus, to the story of migration. From there we visited the most beautiful Basilica SS Annunziata del Vastato. Real gold in the painting on the...

Oct 5, 2017 - The Duomo and Last Supper

We are up early so we can get to the ticket office at the Santa Maria delle Grazie church by 8 a.m. to get in line for any tickets that have become available for today to see da Vinci's Last Supper. We are close to a metro stop where we buy a day pass and we were there in no time. We are in luck. There are only 3 people ahead of us and by 8:10 we have tickets for 3 p.m. So now we head over to Duomo Square to have some breakfast and tour the magnificient Duomo Cathedral. The cathedral was built by the dukes of Milan to earn Milan recognition...

Oct 4, 2017 - Discovering Milan

After a fitful night of sleeping a few hours, up a few hours, repeat, finally rousted about 8am, had a lite breakfast of oatmeal, yogurt, and fresh fruit, and we were out the door to discover what Milan had to offer. Milan is known as a global capital of fashion and design and our apartment was in the hub of things - oh la la! Too bad we were a couple days early for the famous Fashion Week. Of utmost importance for the day was to see if we could get last minute tickets to see da Vinci’s Last Supper at Santa Maria della Grazie Church. So...
