Sep 21, 2018 - Stage 28 Aquapendente to Viterbo

Overview/ Highlights We got away early again and although a few ups and downs we were climbing gradually. Stayed on the main road most of the morning and we skirted around the side of Bolsena Lake, but didn’t see it for ages due to hotels and houses along there. Stopped in Bolsena for morning coffee. Conveniently it was right in front of a bike shop. Gaylene and I took the opportunity to buy a couple of local cycle print tshirts. After morning tea we had glimpses of the lake as we climbed up through olive groves. A 4 km segment on gravel...

Sep 19, 2018 - Day 6 - The Vatican

The hotel isn't in the greatest location however provided you are happy to catch the shuttle and train, bus and train or Uber to and from the train station, it's not bad for the price. Certainly not the 4 star hotel it's supposed to be and it looks as though it's used by lots of tour groups. We've been enjoying the buffet breakfast though. Lots of delicious, crunchy bacon (looks more like prosciutto), eggs, fruit, pastries, ham, continental meats and cheese. Riley was consistent with bacon, scrambled eggs and ham. We caught the 9:30 shuttle...

Sep 18, 2018 - Rome

Buonasera from Italy, We arrived safely in Rome and survived the taxi ride from the airport to our hotel! Yesterday evening after meeting our tour guide Catarina and our fellow tour mates, we headed out for a walking tour of the neighbourhood around our hotel. Then we headed across the Tiber River and continued our walking tour through Trastevere. Along the way we had some training on how to be safe on the narrow cobblestone streets...always be on the look out for cars and motorbikes. They come out of nowhere and you always have to be...

Sep 18, 2018 - Day 5 - Hop On Hop Off Bus tour

Hop On, Hop Off bus tour today. As we planned to stay into the evening to see Rome by night, we had a lazy morning and were too late to catch any of the shuttles to the train station. My plan was to catch the bus to the train station, Sarah's was to catch an Uber. As she was willing to pay, we caught an Uber. We left the train at Termini, and popped into the TIM kiosk to see how we could monitor the data on our SIM cards. Got that sorted and then set out to find the bus. It wasn't too difficult as it leaves from close by the terminal. We...

Sep 17, 2018 - Day 4 - Colosseum visit

We all slept pretty well last night. Hopefully we are in the time zone and keep doing so. Today is our visit to the Colosseum and I had the alarm set for 7:00am to make sure we had time for showers and breakfast so we could catch the 8:30 shuttle to the train station. We are also planning to buy our SIM cards so if we have time, we stop at Termini on the way to get them. So much for that plan. We went outside at 8:15 to find quite a few people already waiting for the shuttle so had to wait for the second trip to the train station. We...

Sep 17, 2018 - Rome or Roma, as they say in Italy

Although we started from home on September 16th, we didn't arrive in Rome until the 17th after a short flight to Dallas and then a MUCH longer flight from Dallas to Rome. We and the other 9 from our group were met at the airport by a Collette agent and all our luggage arrived. Hurray! We were soon off to our hotel in the center of Rome to meet our tour guide, Giuseppe. Since it was only mid-morning, we checked our luggage with the hotel and headed out on our own to explore Rome with a map in hand and our hotel marked, so we could find our...

Sep 16, 2018 - Day 3 - Around Rome

Our plan today was to lie around at the hotel and catch up to ourselves. That didn't quite work out because we were all excited to get into the city. The kids were keen to see the Colosseum so we had breakfast and then caught the 9:30 shuttle to Tiburtina, one of the local Metro stations. We had to wait for the second shuttle trip as there were a few other people waiting before us. I'd researched the Metro passes and decided a 7 day pass would probably work best for us as it can be used on the metro, train and buses. The fun began. The kids...

Sep 14, 2018 - Our "Lighthouse" Moments in Rome

We are on the "hop on hop off" bus on dusk. The buses run between 9am and 7:30pm daily. As they have a variety of stops our bus drove straight pass a line of people waiting. When we hear a forlorn cry with hands raised from one of the waiting people " where are you going"? At every opportunity we do try and respond in Italian. We have "grazie" down pat. It is the hello & good evening we sometimes struggle with depending on our fatigue. Debra is a huge fan of a big rock band as well as Johnny Depp (The Tourist). Debra walked up to the...

Sep 14, 2018 - All Roads Lead to Rome .....Part 2

Wednesday - We leave the Vatican by "taxi" and head to the Villa Borghese. We have a private tour booked for 3pm and we were leaving the Vatican at 2:30. Time to panic! Watches set...Go! The "taxi" driver claims 20 mins. Ok we can do this....but it actually took 10 mins. Phew ! We are making good time. However, this "taxi" driver drops us at the wrong gate with poor instructions. Back to panic & resetting watches. We march down a long path in 30 deg temperature with really no clue as to where our meeting point is. All signs are in Italian....

Sep 13, 2018 - All Roads Lead to Rome

So this is the latest. We arrived in Rome late Monday afternoon. We eventually located our hotel (Google maps was a little off) Tuesday - we meet a fellow Aust and so the 3 of us do the "hop on hop off" bus around the city. Impressive views of the ancient city but also scary to watch the driving of the locals. Organised chaos. Red lights are just a suggestion to slow down. Pedestrian crossings are a waste of paint. You play dodge em with the cars, buses & vespers. They just come at you. The only time the vehicles drive in a single file - is...

Aug 22, 2018 - August, 21 & 22

Dear all, Well here we are in Rome. I can't believe that I am here. Other places were not so mystical or seemed unattainable to visit but Rome always seemed unattainable to visit. Anyway to move on. The trip from Venice was through some lovely countryside. We arrived in Rome late in the afternoon but as they are in the height of summer we were able to go for a walk around Rome. We visited Trevi fountain, the Panethon, which is quiet beautiful inside. It is amazing that the columns are still standing and stable. The dome was truly...

Our Big Trip

Jul 31, 2018 - Rome

Wow wow wow!!! We arrived in Rome on the 27th and I think we have walked every inch of it!! This city leaves me with complete goosebumps.. to think so much is over 2000 years old, where do I start, I nearly cried when I saw The Fontana di Trevi, it’s massive scale is breathtaking, the streets, the bustle, the food the wine OMG and then there’s the colosseum.. it totally freaked me out seeing the lower levels and standing on the arena floor area thinking of what happened there!! We spent 4hours walking around there including the Roman forum...
