Oct 1, 2018 - Naples

Buongiorno, The last two nights of our tour were spent in Naples. Then we extended our stay in Naples by three nights (in the same hotel). It has been a good break. We’ve rested up, caught up on laundry and we’re ready for Part 2 of our trip. We did a lot of walking in Naples and we’ve got the street crossing thing figured out (as best as one can). It’s all about the eye contact. You have to stare them down and don’t hesitate. Sunday we went on an excursion to Mt. Vesuvius. The bus took us to the car park at an elevation of 1,000 metres....

Sep 29, 2018 - Day 16 - Pompeii and Vesuvius

We missed having breakfast this morning because by the time I woke the kids and we were all organised, we didn't have a lot of time before we had to meet the tour bus to Pompeii and Vesuvius. Fortunately, the meeting point was just across the square from where we are staying and our guide arrived shortly after we did. Grand final day in Australia and the mighty Eagles were playing so Riley and I had our noses stuck in the live scores as we made our way to the meeting point and then on to Pompeii. We were met at Pompeii by our local guide...

Sep 29, 2018 - Pompeii and Herculaneum

Visited Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii had 20,000 people killed by sulphur dioxide fumes and then they were covered by ash. Herculaneum residents were covered with molten lava in 79 A. D. Today 3 million residents live around Mt. Vesuvius. It is Italy's most dangerous volcano and our guide said that experts can predict activity 7 days in advance. He hopes that they are right.

Sep 28, 2018 - Sorrento to Naples

Buonasera, On Wednesday we had a free day in Sorrento. We explored churches, took a stroll through the lemon grove, walked down to the waterfront, talked to the wood inlaid craftsmen and had a wonderful lunch in a beautiful garden restaurant. On our last night in Sorrento, our group was invited to an authentic Italian dinner at the home of Teresa and Luigi. They only host these dinners for Rick Steve tours. They have a beautiful garden at their home filled with lemon trees, lime trees, kiwis and vegetables. At the back of the property...

Sep 28, 2018 - Day 15 - Venice to Naples

Time to say farewell to beautiful Venice. We've loved our apartment and our wanders around the city. Check out time is 10:00am and our train to Naples leaves at 11:30 so no need to rush our breakfast or packing. I had to take our rubbish down to the rubbish boat that waits at the edge of the nearby square every morning for mixed rubbish and takes various recyclables every other day. Today is paper and cardboard day. Certainly different walking your rubbish down to a boat. Riley finished off the pasta for breakfast and then he and I took a...

Sep 28, 2018 - Naples

Visited a buffalo farm that produced mozzarella. Saw them making the cheese and then went to a another Buffalo farm that had 1000 animals. We then made our own wood-fired pizzas. Quite a bit of fun. Then on to Naples which had horrible traffic. There's a subway strike, thousands of people milling around and some bigwig politician was at the same museum we were at. Not to mention we saw at least 3 cruise ships. It a bit of a dirty city.

May 22, 2018 - Naples

Tuesday 22nd May: A big day out in Napoli. The hotel put on a simple but very nice breakfast and after it the first job of the day was to go back to the train station to book our trip to Siena. Naples has a brand new train station and metro and they are brilliant with big shopping galleries attached - the best we have seen. We did not use the metro but all stations are decorated with great art. To make best use of time, we decided to go on the Tramvia City Tour and bought tickets at the top of Piazza Garibaldi. While we were waiting for the...

May 21, 2018 - Naples

Monday 21st May: After a meagre breakfast at the villa, we said goodbye to Gina who was staying a couple of extra days in Matera. Angelo had organised a driver to take us to the bus stop in Bari and Agnes and Jerry on to the airport so it was goodbye to them also. The trip on the Marinobus to Naples was a very comfortable non-stop three hours and we arrived just before 2pm. It was far from quiet, though, with everyone yabbering loudly in Italian to each other or into their phones. The northern and coastal country of Puglia is very flat and...

Apr 25, 2018 - Castellamare di Stabia, Italy

We had planned one long, tricky stretch of train travel in Italy from Genova to Castellamare. Fortunately, buying intercity tickets online was easy. The trip from Genova to Naples, even with a change of trains in Rome, was straightforward. However, when we got to Naples, the challenge began. We left the simplicity and timeliness of the intercity system and enlisted the help of the wonderful English-speaking woman in the tourist office. She told us that our local train to Castellamare was downstairs, track 2. Armed with this info, we tried...

Oct 30, 2017 - My Impressions of Rome - by John

My first impressions of Rome, Italy Everything in Rome seems old and in need of repair. Many of the streets and sidewalks were cobblestone, which was very difficult to walk on. Because the city is so old, the streets are narrow and there is no provision for parking. Since there are no alleys, the garbage is stored on the street, and it stinks. We were staying in the central city, and to even drive in the central city, a person must buy a special permit for $4,000 a year. That gives them the right to try to find a spot to park on the street!...

Oct 6, 2017 - Arriverderci Roma..........

A quick farewell to our chocolate box friends, and Gabriele. Headed to Roma Centrale to join the bun fight to get a reservation for our trip to Napoli, but first validating our Eurail pass. All done, caught a schmick train to Naples. Feeling as if we had botox to our faces, feeling the Gs as we going so fast at 260kms per hour. Police presence and army with machine guns everywhere. The government is working hard on keeping the peace. Locating Hotel Gismonda a challenge. It was eventually found despite GPS on iphone. Secreted behind a big...

Sep 18, 2017 - Herculaneum

Yesterday we branched out a tad and, as the funicular still wasn't in operation, we took the Metro - always an adventure in a new city - to try to get to the Castle on the hill. Well, it worked out okay and, better still, being Saturday it wasn't crowded down there. We got on the train at Piazza Dante and off at Vanvitelli in the Vomero District then, a short walk from the station, we got to the massive Castel Sant'Elmo straddled across a high hill overlooking the city of Naples. The 360° views from up there are worth the effort! We looked...
