Nov 6, 2018 - Counterclockways around Ireland this time

In our 5 weeks in Ireland there have been many highlights including the Burren in Co Clare. 500sq-kms of vast cracked pavements of striated limestone with deep fissures, some catching soil but mostly barren, huge stand-alone boulders dumped in the glacial-era. Wild and windswept, real hardscrabble landscape but stunning. You can almost visualise the massive shifts in the earths crust written on the raw rocks. As I said, breathtaking. Down to Cahersiveen for a few days. On our last morning heard “Bring him Home” (out of Les Miserable, sung...

Oct 5, 2016 - Wexford

I am now in Wexford, which is in southeastern Ireland, not too far from Waterford. This is to be my second to the last stop, with Dublin to be the last. The term "time flies" certainly seems appropriate to this trip. I know I have accomplished and seen much, but it almost feels as if I have only started the trip. As much as I have seen in the UK and Ireland, there is still a lot that I did not. For instance, I did not go to the southwest part of Ireland, Counties Kerry and Dingle nor the lovely town of Kinsale. There is even a small town of...

Oct 5, 2016 - U.S. Bound

Okay people, this is my last entry for this fabulous adventure. My great travel agent rebooked me on flights leaving Dublin tomorrow morning (6 October) at 0955. That will put me in Wilmington around mid-afternoon. I hope that is sufficient time to do laundry, pack, order a new refrigerator, and scat out of town sometime in the morning of the 7th. At this point, I'm not sure where I will alight other than knowing I need to be in DC at High Noon on Monday, 10 October, and then continue my previously set up local itinerary for the next almost...

Aug 25, 2015 - Hook Head Lighthouse

We visited the incredible Hook Head Lighthouse today in Wexford. It has served sailors and shipping for 800 years, apart from a short closure during the 17th century. It is thought to be one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. When the Tower of Hook became fully automated in 1996 and no longer needed resident keepers, it was decided to celebrate its uniqueness by opening it to the public. This is one of the most outstanding lighthouses we have ever visited. The cliffs and the sea around it are incredible. We saw signs...

May 17, 2015 - Relax Day around Wexford - Concert at night

The Maldron Hotel is a few ks from city centre. A good hotel, modern, spacious room with countryside view. Went for a walk/jog around 6.15 and took a few shots of the area. The countryside reminds me much of New Zealand with the green fields and fauna. Today's weather started cloudy with a light breeze but has improved with more sunshine- patches of bright! 12 noon the choir are having a practise ready for this evenings concert with the Wexford Male Choir. Lunch around 1pm then we head into the city for sightseeing and shopping. It's good...

Sep 24, 2014 - Wexford, County Wexford, Ireland

We stopped overnight on the outskirts of Wexford in order to visit the Irish National Heritage Park. FERRYCARRIG HOTEL We stayed at the lovely Ferrycarrig Hotel on the bank of the River Slaney where we were greeted and treated with typical Irish hospitality by the staff and management. Also, it was only a mile from the Irish National Heritage Park. Photos 1-10 The General Manager, Derek Coyne, was especially helpful in making our stay so very enjoyable. Ireland 2014

Oct 4, 2007 - From the greens in Ireland to sunsets in Greece

Dearest Friends and family; I haven't found time to write recently as touring has been such a whirlwind of travel and no internet. I had a most wonderful time in Ireland with my great friend Ruth Kelly. She lives on a windy hill in Wexford. Wexford is a medieval city on the east side of Ireland, about an hour south of Dublin. She has build a beautiful modern/traditional house in the heather and gorse. When she was working I worked on her garden and rode bicycles around Wexford. She took a four day weekend and we took her car to Kerry on...

Aug 19, 2006 - Kilkenny. Ireland

We finished our canal trip and went to Kilkenny to catch the train back up to Gabriel's where we will spend the next two nights. We loved every moment of the trip. It was quiet and peaceful and very picturesque on the river, and we stopped often at little towns on the way to stocjk up and visit the pubs, of which there were quite a few. They include combination grocery/pubs and a hardware/deli/pub, really tiny. Kilkenny was a very picturesque town with a river, castle, windy streets and quaint shopfronts. We are back at Gabriel's now, in...

Jul 26, 2006 - Wexford, Ireland

We have made it across to Ireland and landed this morning in Rosslare, county Wexford. We picked up our hire car and are driving up the coast looking for somewhere to stay. Ireland is about 25 degrees C so nice and cool though not as green as I remember it, oh well it is summer now. We have had our first Guiness on Irish soil.

Jul 24, 2006 - Home after 6 months 2 weeks.

So on the 24th July, a little earlier than 1st thought, but very glad to be back, I touched down at Heathrow. Caz had said she couldn't make it to the airport so would just be my Ma, but they suprised me and 2 of my best friends, as well as my sis and ma were there to greet me! It was excellent. Every airport since NZ i had wanted someone to be at the barrier waiting for me and now it was my turn. I saw my mum, sis and friends, ran round the barrier, trolley going all over the place and promptly burst into tears in my mum's arms, out of...
