Apr 12, 2018 - Oman Trips: Wahiba Sands and Wadi Bani Khaleed
The great Wahiba sands are longitudinal dunes 200 km long and 100 km wide running south from the Eastern Hajars to the Arabian Sea. The dunes are 100-150 metres high in shades of colour from orange to hues of amber. Bedouin camps can be found along the tracks and trails in this isolated desert. In sporadic areas can be found stands of single-species woodlands. Where the sands meet the ocean, outcrops of aolianite (sand compressed into rock) can be found displaying unusual and attractive abstract shapes. Here the beaches mellow into soft...

Apr 7, 2018 - Mumbai – Elephanta Caves and Bollywood
Mumbai is the last stop in India. Toady’s tour is the Elephanta Caves, located on an island just off the coast of Mumbai. Actually, Mumbai started out seven islands that have gradually been joined together with landfill projects. Another Portuguese colony until sometime in the 1600’s when the Princess of Portugal married the King of England. Mumbai went to England as part of her dowry. It’s the Banking and Bollywood capital of India. Our guide told us the area where all the big banking skyscrapers are located was once a moat for the fort....

Apr 7, 2018 - Mumbai (Bombay) India
History: Spread over seven islands, Mumbaii is a major capital of India. Started as a fishing village the region was transformed by the Portuguese then ceded to the British east India company about 100 years later. Bombay as it was known until 1995 is home to the Taj Mahal and Gateway of India. Can’t explain the living conditions barefoot is the shoe of the day, cows, rats and garbage rule the land. After traveling out and about have never taken so many showers in my life. No reason to ever visit this country ever again, view the...

Apr 6, 2018 - Goa – Land of Portuguese Catholic Churches
The island of Goa is the next stop in India. It was Portuguese ruled for 500 years until 1961 so has a Latin feel to it. The band (Trumpet, Saxophone, 2 drums) on the pier is playing a latin sounding polka as we come down the gangway. There is a Queen and King you can get your picture with the looks like she has a Spanish dress on. The pier is surrounded by green hills and rusting boats. Not at all what we were expecting. Immigration is easier today. The guys just look at your picture and add another stamp to the landing permit. Today we...

Apr 6, 2018 - Marnagao Goa India
History: The state of Goa was the cultural center of Portuguese India for 450 years. This was the first region in India colonized by Europe. About a third of Goans are catholic and the Basilica of Born Jesus, holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier. Can’t quite get my arms around a cultural that lives in filth, allow cows to rule the country and don’t understand personal space. Heading to the markets of Mumbai if I find my water buffalo sandals I will be happier with India.

Apr 4, 2018 - Cochin India
History: Known as the “Queen of the Arabia sea “ Cochin has been a bustling port for more than 1,000 years. Today it is regarded as the worlds leading producer of pepper. So far seen two of four cities on our India stops, Chennai and Cochin, dirty, filthy areas, people rude and don’t wear shoes and appear to avoid bathing. Jury’s still out.

Apr 4, 2018 - Cochin – Church, Palace and seashore stroll
The Sapphire Princess with 2,600 passengers is in port with us this morning and the locals are setting up merchandise tents on the pier. Yippee, local shopping. Mel's says I cannot buy anyone scarfs. But they are so beautiful! I ended up with a pair of pants with elephants on them. The Princess group looks mostly Americans and about 15 years younger than us, on average. Must be a shorter cruise. Maybe even a few 40 somethings!!! Immigration is just a tab bit easier. First you present your landing permit to the guy at the end of the...

Apr 1, 2018 - Chennai (Madras) India
History: formerly known as Madras, Chennai is the cultural center of Southern India. It was Founded as a British city as the fortifications of fort st. George were built in 1650 on uninhabited land and only later surrounded by the structures of old Madras. The British remained in the fort until India’s independence in 1947 Okay who remembers Madras shorts and shirts that had to be washed by hand in cold water so they didn’t bleed well this is where the material came from. That being said filthy filthy filthy city garbage is thrown...

Apr 1, 2018 - Chennai, India Kanchipuram City of 1,000 temples
Ready for India. Caught our breath a bit with two days at sea. It’s been almost non-stop since Ho Chi Minh. Although we are docked at Chennai, our tour is to Kanchipuram City about 2 hours away. Immigration is not too bad as they have several guys with laptops but we were checked twice more before leaving the port. Getting to the cruise terminal is treacherous as we have to walk over old trains tracks and other ruts made more complicated by the Viking red carpet. I think Viking was trying to smooth the way but it just masked all the ruts...
