Apr 1, 2018 - Chennai, India Kanchipuram City of 1,000 temples

Ready for India. Caught our breath a bit with two days at sea. It’s been almost non-stop since Ho Chi Minh. Although we are docked at Chennai, our tour is to Kanchipuram City about 2 hours away. Immigration is not too bad as they have several guys with laptops but we were checked twice more before leaving the port. Getting to the cruise terminal is treacherous as we have to walk over old trains tracks and other ruts made more complicated by the Viking red carpet. I think Viking was trying to smooth the way but it just masked all the ruts...

Apr 1, 2018 - Chennai (Madras) India

History: formerly known as Madras, Chennai is the cultural center of Southern India. It was Founded as a British city as the fortifications of fort st. George were built in 1650 on uninhabited land and only later surrounded by the structures of old Madras. The British remained in the fort until India’s independence in 1947 Okay who remembers Madras shorts and shirts that had to be washed by hand in cold water so they didn’t bleed well this is where the material came from. That being said filthy filthy filthy city garbage is thrown...

Jan 30, 2018 - India:Chennai, Mahabillapuram and Pudicherry

We flew into Chennai via Kuala Lumpur –our second transfer here on this trip- on 19th January. We arrived late and went to Raintree, the hotel we had booked, which was lovely. We were collected by a driver the next day and travelled to. Mahabillapurum. We stopped off on the way at Dakshina Chitra – a complex of reconstructed ancient regional houses. It was an open air museum but did show how religion, culture and climate determined different styles of architecture in different areas of South India. Mahabalipuram (hereafter known as...

Jan 28, 2018 - India Part One Chennai to Ooty

India Part One Chennai to Ooty We left Hanoi and flew to Chennai formerly Madras on the East coast of India, via Kuala Lumpur. For once we didn’t cross the equator, having done so five times on this trip. We arrived in Chennai just before midnight with a car waiting for us from our hotel, my first time in India, first impressions chaotic traffic, a cow eating out of a dustbin on the pavement of a busy street with goats wandering about and street front shops as ever always open. The following day we headed down to Mahabalipuram (hereafter...

Feb 8, 2017 - Bus to Chennai

2/8-9 Tuk tuk to highway and Express bus to SIMS hospital in Chennai...2 to 3:30pm. There early (we were scheduled to check in at 6) so after a bit of confusion and calling Mohan (who arranged everything) they put us in our same room where we were a month earlier. Bon saw Dr. Bose at 5 and a real nice chat in which he answered all her questions and then more about our president etc., ha! We went out to dinner at the mall nearby...should have seen the Subway but instead settled for very unsatisfactory Burger King! Sleep was fast...I got to...

Jan 18, 2017 - Move from Resort to Vinodhara Guesthouse

Wiki Info on Mamallapuram 1/18 Amazing the difference, or should I say the lack of difference between rooms at a resort and a guesthouse...the major difference is price, ha! $140 vs $14 US...of course, we don't get breakfast here, but when we go buy breakfast at a restaurant it is less than $5 US! But seeing the difference in the people who stay in each place is also an eye opener! Folks at the resort (not the help staff but guests) are aloof, needy, and their expectations w.r.t. service are very high! This is not to say the owner & help...

Jan 16, 2017 - Check out and go to Chariot Beach Resort

12/15 Slowly, slowly we prepare for our departure...packing and saying goodbyes, and still eating...way too much for our lack of 'real' excercise, ha! Took 2+ hours to get to Chariot Beach Resort...last day of Tamil New years festival. Tons of traffic!!! For two days we walked around the place and out to the beach ... a totally different 'crowd' comes to these resorts as you might imagine. Not a lot of chit chat between guests. About an even divide between foreign and Indian tourists.

Jan 10, 2017 - Bon Goes Into Hip Surgery

1/10 Hospital Where Bon's Surgery Took Place Up at 6 a.m., Bonnie was into the shower and out before the nurse came in to get her 'ready' for surgery at 7:30. In good spirits and after a meet with Dr. Bose last night (along with the entire team, ha!) she was very confident and up! ___ I went down to ICU about 11:30 a.m. but Bon was not awake yet...then about 1 p.m. again and she was awake and talking and Dr. Bose showed up as well and said all went well. Bon was feeling good but still dopy. Mare showed up about 1:45 and we visited for...

Jan 7, 2017 - Flight to Chennai

1/7 Went to the airport early so we could get good seat assignments towards the front of the plane. Bon quite opportunistically asked a fellow in the ticket window for Jet Air about it and he went ahead and assigned us our seats even though we would still have to wait another 2 hours to check in! Mare and I played cards while Bon read. It ended up being a half hour late at departure...seemed to me that SpiceJet had some preference, looked like a lot of group travellers taking SpiceJet. The flight was only 2 + hours yet they served us a nice...

Oct 30, 2015 - Pallava

Our late checkout from hotel Perumal, allowed us time to visit the Grand Bazaar just a few streets near to our hotel. This was a smorgasbord for the eyes. The flower market was beautiful. It was here and in the Botanical gardens that The Life of Pi was filmed. Pondicherry is a most worthwhile city to visit. It is quite unique. An hour and a half travel north along the coast road, we pass massive salt works and scampi farms. We arrive at Radisson Blu hotel. Security is stepped up. The mirror check for under our car, the metal detection of...

Mar 13, 2015 - The village I am at is too small to be recognised by Lonely Planet so I amposting as Chenn

March 11, 2015 Jeff’s cake day tomorrow [It’s only the 10th in Canada – pacific time]. Today India won. She beat me like a dirty carpet. I was up at 5:00 AM packing gear, fixing my rear view mirror, I had to put on Suukyi’s rear brake line I bought her the other day and run to the ATM. I was 800 Rs. Short. When I returned to the hotel I drove out back to turn around because it’s tight near the lobby. The have this fucking drain that spills out on to the parking area. The water was soapy. We ended up on our asses even before we left the...

Mar 11, 2015 - Chennai [2]

March 7, 2015 I arrived last night at the hotel at 12:30PM. Same, same, nothing different. I was happy when I arrived. I muttered my ‘thanks’ and kissed my hand, touched the gang plank, then to heart and forehead. The first time I did it was in 2004 under the veil of tears. I have always done it since. I am home. I would not have done it in 1997. Ignorant times. The fucking taxi walla wanted 550 Rs. I gave him 500 Rs. It’s a 10 minute drive. I can get to the Delhi airport from Koral Bagh for 400 Rs. It takes 30 minutes. I was too tired to...
