Dec 31, 2010 - Happy New Year!
I have had a good New Year's so far. I slept through it. Yesterday my friend Dima taught me some yoga and let's just say it is a lot harder than it looks. I am stiff and sore today. I liked it though. I might join the tourist band wagon and take a yoga class. Gandhi has a yoga teacher's training class that runs for four weeks and he is trying to get me to sign-up. Not going to happen but a really nice thought. Perhaps later. Anyway, I am going to Varkala tomorrow. Then perhaps Kollam or Alleppey on my way to Kocji. I am doing well and I...Jump to full entry
Dec 29, 2010 - Kovalam
Making a small side trip today from Thiruvananthapuram. I am in Kovalam, abeach town about half an hour away. I have changed hotels. I am now staying at the Silver Sands. I left Bright Lodge because I came back to the hotel after visiting some friends and found a giant cockroach in my room. I saw several more which I hadn't noticed before also. They were as big as the ones in Chidambaram, and when I went to hotel management about it they told me that when Keralans see a cockroach in their home they consider it to be good-luck. Bullshit....Jump to full entry
Dec 27, 2010 - OOPS
After all of that work to save my phone last week, I killed it yesterday. I decided to do laundry, and took off my pants with the phone still in the pocket and threw them in a bucket of water. Goodbye phone, it was nice to know you. So I am once again phone-less, but I will try to check my e-mail more often. On the plus side my DVD player is now working.Jump to full entry

Jan 11, 2009 - One Week In!
We are in Day 7 at the Beach and Lake Resort. Our daily routine consists of getting up at 4:45 AM for chant, meditation and some yoga and then a walk over to a nearby Hindu temple at 6 for about 45 minutes of very interesting rituals that they perform there every morning. WE then come back and have breakfast and then a 45 minute lecture from Rama about various topics varying from where to but neat stuff to the origins of the various Hindu deities. She is an incredible fountain of knowledge. Everyone has a treatment scheduled each day that...Jump to full entry
Nov 21, 2008 - Insisting India
Jan 22, 2008 - Transportation to the hostel
This is a view of the transportation to the hostel which was basically on the beach. You can see my luggage as I took it out of the taxi. I secured the taxi through the airport service. I was traveling pretty light since I had left most of my luggage in Kuwait.Jump to full entry
Mar 24, 2007 - Cruising the Indian Ocean
More Mah Jongg for Gretchen and bridge for Bob this morning, followed by waltz lessons and lunch. We are still working on our journal and photos, but Gretchen took time off to go on the outer decks to lounge and read this afternoon. It was a perfect day, warm but with a slight sea breeze. The outer decks have comfy wood lounging chairs with cushions. It is easy to doze off from time to time between reading and gazing at the deep blue sea. This part of the Indian Ocean is well traveled by other ships and some can be seen from time to time....Jump to full entry
Dec 1, 2006 - Sun, Sea and Saris.
Travel is so easy these days. Sitting your armchair at home armed with a credit card you can book a flight to anywhere on earth in a matter of minutes. Then you just turn up to the airport, get in a cylindrical metal box for a few hours and emerge bleary eyed at the other side of the world into a completely different culture. It's totally surreal! In the old days you had weeks on a ship to get used to the idea. So it was that I arrived yesterday in Trivandrum, capital of the Southern Indian state of Kerala. I was a bit bewildered for the...Jump to full entry
Nov 26, 2006 - Kovalam
We spent three wonderful days and nights in Kovalam, a small touristy fishing village on the edge of the Arabian Sea. The first morning we walked the beach to watch the local fishermen pulling in their nets. Twenty men pulled on ropes on both ends of the net, singing and laughing, for nearly an hour until the net was ashore. Unfortunately, the laughing was replaced by shouting, blaming, and finger-pointing when the net came up nearly empty of the tuna they sought. The next day we hired a rickshaw to take us to the fish market and town just...Jump to full entry
Aug 26, 2006 - NEYYAR DAM PARTE 3- KOVALAM (noves fotos)!!
May 10, 2006 - Relaxing in Poovar
Hello everyone Sorry about the long delay in communication - we've actually been very busy, but have enjoyed all of your emails and concerns. Got to go and catch a plane very very soon, so this one will be short as well, and I'll upload the photos later (along with longer entries). We finally made it to Cochin, then went up to Jimmy's house for the engagement party (Lolo was hennaed), up into the mountains in Thekkady, back to Jimmy's for the wedding, off onto the house boat in the backwaters (which are actually lovely), then down to the...Jump to full entry
