Nov 10, 2013 - Delhi

If a 5.00am disembarking wasn’t bad enough, Karin decided to switch the main light on at 4.00am and proceed to piss everyone off – including the rest of the train!! We reach Delhi and are transferred by bus to our hotel. It is a very strange ending to our tour because it is still not 6.00am and there are 2 day rooms for 12 of us to share. Sebastian heads off by taxi to stay with a friend. Naveen is going home to see his family before he starts a new tour this evening – so there are hugs all round and the rest of us wonder what to do with...

Nov 3, 2013 - Diwali Delights

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD While we were in Patiala, we spend some of our free time in the afternoon, doing a little shopping in the neighbourhood. With Diwali (The Festival of Lights) fast approaching, the sweet shops were abuzz with people stocking up on gifts for family and friends. This is the first time that I’ve been able to participate in Diwali celebrations in India, and wouldn’t you know it, at the beginning of our trip in August, I suddenly developed an inability to digest milk products. This happened to me shortly after we were...

Oct 23, 2013 - Yikes! Driving In Delhi!

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD It was great to be back in Delhi, spending time with Ajay and Neeta so soon after their two-month long visit with us in Canada and the US. I called this entry “Yikes, driving in Delhi” because after all the driving I did in the UK, I was very comfortable driving on the left hand side of the road. Ajay was so convinced, that he even let me drive his old WagonR vehicle. After returning from their round-the-world trip, they purchased a new car, but kept the old one in reserve. I still can’t believe he trusted me to...

Oct 18, 2013 - Delhi

An early start today as we had to be checked out by 7.30am before heading off for breakfast and our orientation walk around Old Delhi. We felt like we had things under control as we went back to the food court and knew what and how to order. Then it was back to the Metro Station and our familiar line change. This time we got off and Chandri Chawk and headed out into the bustling streets where there are vast numbers of people busy going about their lives whether that be sweeping, selling something, begging (we are advised not to give money...

Oct 18, 2013 - Delhi Discovered

Friday, October 18, 2013 Discovering Old Delhi We got up early this morning! At 7:30am we were showered, packed and ready for the day! Bhanu (our tour leader) took us to the breakfast place and we enjoyed a "dosa", a very thin pancake that you can fill with a yoghourt or curry or with a vegetable rice, or with all of the above! Tastes good! After breakfast we headed for the metro station where we boarded a very crowded train. We managed to stay together as a group (all 12 of us plus leader) even after a very busy transfer and we arrived at...

Oct 17, 2013 - Doing Delhi

Thursday, October 17, 2013 Touring Delhi - Again! The night was one of falling asleep early, waking up at 1:00am and falling asleep at 4:00 until 8:00am. Brian read the Delhi newspaper and Eke typed up the first day to be uploaded and published in the middle of the night. In the morning we connected with Sue and the three of us went for breakfast. It was a challenge to figure out what the food at the buffet was. They use a lot of yoghourt here, called "curd." After breakfast we met up with "John" (or he met up with us!) and made a plan for...

Oct 17, 2013 - Delhi

I was grateful to have had a good night's sleep and woke up feeling refreshed. I had plenty of time to have a shower, sort out my things and write up my diary. Brian and Eke didn't have a good night so it was a slow start before we headed out to breakfast. There was no breakfast at our Swati so we decided to walk to the other Swati as they had a food court. It took a while for us to find out how it all worked but eventually we tried all sorts of unknown but tasty dishes. On the way back we saw the driver that had taken B&E around yesterday...

Oct 16, 2013 - Dehli [3]

October 16, 2013 I have used up anther 32,000 characters on [Delhi 2] so I have now started [Delhi 3]. I am going to keep and update a separate post my experience at Indian Customs. It's a gong show I want to be able to read the exact process for next time. Got up at 2. Did sweet fuck all except talk to the boys. Manish has so many problems at the travel agency. He is only there because of Mr. Singh. I tried calling Girish to make my final payment but he was not answering. I really wanted to go to the airport today but it’s Eid, the Muslim...

Oct 16, 2013 - Old Town Delhi and "Food Walk"

First Day in Delhi, October 16, 2013. Waking up, we felt quite disoriented. The only "window" in our room is translucent glass and the view outside is high walls with pipes going down the walls. We can see a small pluck of sky way up! The bed is very good, the shower modern with lukewarm water. They are still finishing this floor of the hotel. Nothing available to remind us of time and place. We decided to face the world outside the room, showered, went downstairs and discovered that breakfast was not included here. We walked out into the...

Oct 16, 2013 - Delhi

I was struck by how many interesting people I met on my long day of travel to India. It was a long day because the flight left at 1.15am and I worked the day leading up to it and then had to get an earlier shuttle to get to the airport in time to pickup my rupees before the exchange closed (for some reason the bank couldn't order rupees for me). My fellow shuttle passenger was off to China for business in the auto part industry. The driver had taken groups of school children to China. The guy I shared my inter-terminal journey with in KL...

Oct 15, 2013 - Indian Customs and Suu Kyi

October 15, 2013 I have been here for two weeks now. I spent all day at the airport. It was ridiculous – again It went down like this: Khans brother drove me to the cargo terminal. We arrived at 9:30. He fucked off. To get in to the cargo terminal I have to go through ‘security’. For this, I weaved my way around a coral. I was the only one there. I presented my passport and a copy of the Bill of lading [BOL]. They checked everything for about 10 minutes and gave me a ticket. I went out through the same coral and showed the security guy my...

Oct 15, 2013 - Travelling Days

October 14, 15, and the wee hours of October 16, 2013. Travelling Days. Our trip started on the 14th with doing the last of the packing, getting the house ready, saying goodbye to Brian's parents, having a last cup of tea outside (Eke) and deciding that we were going for a chicken dinner with all the trimmings to a local restaurant on our way - this being Thanksgiving Day! We left the restaurant at 6 pm, filled up to the brim with a very good meal (for a very good price we might add!) and made our way to the airport - Park'n Fly. No major...
