Nov 8, 2018 - “Your Happy is My Happy”

Day 2 in New Delhi NOTE: Having much difficulty with iternet on the boat so will try sending pictures a different way. We may have to resend with photos later. “Your Happy is My Happy” Today was New Delhi tour day. The smog was noticeably improved and the cool and comfortable weather was a good match for being out and about all day. Our local guide, Ravi, was a font of knowledge, and even though we missed about a third of what he said, the parts we did understand were fascinating. First stop was the incredible Humayun’s Tomb, a 16th century...

Nov 6, 2018 - The Scam Artist

Day 1 in New Delhi The Scam Artist We arrived safely in Delhi on an early morning flight from Dubai with smog as thick as San Francisco fog. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the burnt smell that assaulted our senses was not the Welcome to India Barbecue like I initially thought. Childhood memories of burning sugar cane fields filled my head, but the gray skies and air heavy enough to taste let me know that I wasn’t in Louisiana any more. The driver got us to the hotel in one piece if you don’t count the emotional damage. Fluid...

Dec 11, 2017 - On the road again

On the road again. Sorry Sharon. After a great breakfast at our Hill Top Swiss Cottage Hotel (ginger lemon honey beverage for my cold; porridge; fruit salad of pomegranate, pineapple, banana, papaya, and apple; orange juice; toast - for 250 rupees), we asked our sweet, gentle, non-English speaking driver to stop at the Sivananda Ashram gates, to which he agreed. But before we knew it we were past it, and with another 6 to 7 hours driving ahead we kept on motoring down the narrow winding mountain road. We did stop in Haridwar for photos at...

Nov 13, 2017 - The family adventure takes off

We are finally taking a family vacation, all together, to India, to share it's magic and frustrations with Judson, but to also finally introduce him to Sheeja, whom we attempted to adopt back in the mid 1980's when they were both children. Sheeja is now married with three children, and we have been keeping in touch almost daily for the past several years via WhatsApp. We left Home at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10th, flew to Vancouver, arriving at 7 p.m., waited until midnight for our 12 1/2 hour flight to Shanghai, where we arrived at their...

Nov 13, 2017 - Random Thoughts

Just some travel thoughts: We got a great price rate of $750 Cdn return from Vancouver to Delhi on China Eastern Airlines. We did have some booking problems when they changed our original flight to the next day and we would have missed our connections,so we re-scheduled for the previous day. We did have to go to the Vancouver office to get refunds on the extra legroom for Jud that I paid for and that was a hassle, not totally fixed up. Since we were saving approximately $700 x 3 people = $2100 we guess it was still worth it. The leg between...

Nov 6, 2017 - Bikaner to Delhi

Monday 6th November 2017 Bikaner to Delhi by train Breakfast in the hotel this morning then we were driven by Sanju the short distance to Bikaner Junction Railway Station about 1.5km away through the narrow lanes of the old city behind Kote Gate. This gate has a history connected with King George V who died in 1910. Bikaner has a very long history, having been founded in 1488, and the British “occupation” and colonisation is now seemingly just a blip in this long history. The main thing left is the English language and of course, cricket....

Oct 30, 2017 - Mandawa to Delhi

Monday 30th October 2017 Mandawa to Delhi Today we visited the old havelis in Mandawa. Havelis are grand houses like mansions that were built by traders who lived in the town from the 1750s onwards right through to the 20th century, until the British taxed them so heavily that they couldn’t afford to stay there and moved away to other places in India and around the world. They were decorated with murals on the outside walls and some were brightly decorated inside but unfortunately most of them have fallen into disrepair. We were able to...

Oct 19, 2017 - In Delhi India

Thursday 19th October 2017 Delhi/New Delhi After a really good night's sleep, we had breakfast in the hotel then met the rest of our fellow travellers downstairs. We were picked up at 9am for a visit to some of the major sites in Delhi. The first place we visited was Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, constructed by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan. Beautiful place. After visiting there, we were taken by bicycle rickshaws to the spice market through the busy Delhi streets, crowded with shoppers doing last minute Diwali shopping. This was...
