Hofn, Iceland We are learning to expect everything in one day from Icelandic weather. At 6 am it was quite nice out. By 6:30 it poured rain and even hailed. By our departure at 8, it was simply cloudy. As the day went on we had sunshine, rain, clouds, ferocious winds and gentle breezes ending with gorgeous weather. Our first stop of the day was in the middle of the largest lava field from a single eruption in the world. It took place in 1783-84 and had repercussions worldwide. Der groesste Gletscher Europas wartet mit Superlativen auf. Der Vatnajoekull ist doppelt so gross, wie die gesamte Landmasse Franzoesisch Polynesiens, oder 3x groesser als Luxembourg! Die Gletscherzungen suchen sich Ihren Weg durch dichtes Gruen, schwarze Lava, mondartiger Oednis oder gluehen im Abendlicht hinter einsamen Farmen. Ganze Eisberge kalben in der Joekursalon-Lagune am Weg ins offene Meer. Hier schwimmen -so scheints- ganze Haeuser, Autos und noch groessere Eisberge, begleitet von einzelnen Seehunden im Abendlicht an uns vorbei....

First thing in the morning the wind was howling outside so we dressed for the cold. We travelled to Vik again but continued along the coast to the east. The narrow coastal strip soon widened into a great plain. Again large isolated hills rose from the flat grassland. Further on the land was covered with huge lava fields covered in green moss. Our first stop was at Kirkjubaejarklauster located where the plains met the steep hills and a waterfall fell from the edge above. We moved on to the Skaftafell National Park.
