Jun 25, 2007 - Largo Atitlan (Lake)

Hi All, In a town called San Pedro on the shore of lake Atitlan. Took a long Bus trip on Saturday morning. It was also very exciting it was a chicken mini bus. The reason for the name is not that it has chickens it it but cause it plays chicken on the road. Some really daring overtaking. We required to go on a narrow road around a huge mountain. I England or SA the road is narrow enouigh to be a one way street with no parking on the side of the road. There was a truck oncoming and we were rounding a bend and they barely braked and passed...

Jun 22, 2007 - San Pedro at Lago de Atitlan.. hippies, bongo drums and woman who dont shave their underarms (eeewwww)

so the next stop was lago de atitlan.. this is quite a stunning lake just to the west of Antigua... it truly was beautiful and we had decided to stay at San Pedro for reasons that shall remain nameless... we had heard good things about it although we werent told about the hippies.. its the sort of place that people come to for 3 days and stay 3 weeks and I can see why... well if you like massive partying in an idyllic setting and chilling out smoking weed all day, playing bongo drums, growing dreadlocks and not shaving any hair on your body...

Dec 30, 2006 - Panajachel - Lago Atitlan

Summary: - Trip to Panajechal - Nature reserve at Pana - watch out for the big hawk It’s 6am and a handful of roosters herald the start of a new day. I get breakfast and head to the school to meet the others at 645am for a 7am coach departure. Unfortunately for us we still haven’t managed to adopt ‘latin time’, if we did have we would have benefited from an extra half hour in bed considering the coach didn't arrive until 730am. We were a group of about 14 people waiting to be picked up and whisked away to the Guatemalan Lake District for...

Jul 22, 2006 - Kids of all kinds

My last day at Lago del Atitlan. I got up early and crossed the lake in a launch (a boat which is meant to hold 12 but is sometimes crowded with as many as 25 people) to visit Estela, a Guatemalan woman I had met the week before in Antigua. Estela lives in San Pedro la Laguna with her three little girls. Her nephew was visting when I was there. She teaches Spanish, but is also a specialist in teaching indigenous kids to overcome dyslexia. Dyslexia is apparently a big problem in this population. Estela's house and yard are lovely, her...

Apr 30, 2006 - San Pedro, Lago Atitlan

San Pedro is set right on the Lago Atitlan. We have been really excited to come here, and have heard many other travelers raving about it. We scored the best hotel in town which is only $5 a night for both of us with an amazing view of the lake and a balcony for hammock time. Being that we are coming close to the end of our trip we have decided to spend a little less then 2 weeks here relaxing before its back to the real world, AGH!!! Enough of the real world talk, back to San Pedro. This small town along the lake is full of Mayan culture...

May 16, 2005 - Week Thirty-seven

Day 254: April 11, 2005 San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala Monday morning I got up at 6am and studied for a little bit before I left for my first class. The classes were one-on-one and I had the same teacher for both the morning and afternoon sessions. We started off by talking to find out where I was with my conversation skills and later I took a test to find out where we should begin my grammar lessons. While we were talking my teacher asked me if I had studied in El Salvador previously and I told her that although I have lived there for...

Lenalatina 2005

Apr 7, 2005 - Central America.... Proudly brought to you by: (insert Pepsi, Coke or your favourite beer here)!

Sunday 03.04.05 Despite being close to freezing as we emerged from the warmth of our sleeping bags at Fuentes Georginas, we couldn't resist going down for one last swim in the hot springs. Down the mountain on the way to Xela, a Mayan family climbed aboard our pickup, laughing as we hung on to the rails for dear life and dodged overhanging plants. It appears carbonated beverages run Central America. Everywhere one turns, there are advertisements for Pepsi, Coca Cola and the local cervezas, such as Gallo here. It probably should come as no...

Mar 29, 2005 - Guatemala - San Pedro de Laguna

Hat igen veget ert a nyugalmas 3 het. A tavolban tovabbi ket vulkan magasodik egymas mellett, valamint a to korul vegig meredek hegyek huzodnak. Valamikor ez egy osszefuggo vulkanrendszer volt, de beomlott es feltoltodott vizzel. Roviden, beszaras ahogy kinez. Nem lattam meg egy ehhez hasonlo helyet ahhol 3...

Feb 15, 2005 - Journey to San Pedro la Laguna

Sam and I have finally moved on from Xela. I know it seemed as if it would never happen, but it is done. Friday night, Sam and I bought some guacamole fixins, some creme filled pastries (from a place called XelaPan) and a couple of pizzas (from TelePizza) and had ourselves a pizza, guacamole and donut party, just like old times. We also went for a liter of wine with our friends Hemp and Angie at one of the best restaurants in Xela called Casa Babylon. Yum. Any which way, Saturday morning we said a tear filled goodbye to our family, caught a...

Feb 10, 2005 - Lago Atitlan, Guatemala

We have been on the lake for several days now, and plan on staying at least a few more. Our plan for Guatemala, because we only have a few weeks here, is to not feel rushed. It would be easy to get caught up in the running from place to place, seeing all there is to see in marathon style. As an alternative we have opted to choose only a handful of places and do our best to get to know each one a little bit. It's hard not to be a tourist when you are one, and even though our trip will look a little like...
