Jul 14, 2012 - la última clase
So yesterday was my last class! A bittersweet day, saying good bye to classmates, my wonderful teacher, but celebrating an accomplishment that I actually did it! I studied, and feel more confident in speaking spanish(okay Spanglish)! Some of "Los niños cool"went for lunch to celebrate! Delicious crepes at la Luna de Miel( honeymoon)....I had to have a Parisian crepe to celebrate the new arrival( she's part français)!! After our lunch we went to Pastores to get my new shoes and boots. A bunch of different people went along for "the ride" and...Jump to full entry

Yesterday was another beautiful day here in Antigua! I must say I can't complain about the weather---even though it is rainy season, it usually rains later in the day when we are at Janet's for la cena (dinner). Yesterday's activities included a visit to a project school for disadvantaged children( I mentioned it in an earlier post), needless to say my tough skin lasted the duration of our visit, however, to see such poverty and such desperation to win any game for "a prize" was disheartening. I wonder what we as tourists are doing by...Jump to full entry

Antiguamente*** Sorry I did not write yesterday! As I said previously, we did crack open the chocolate and we all ate chocolate with cinnamon, choc with macadamia and chocolate with chilies! MMMMmmmm-just so you know it was delicious! I went to school yesterday and did well for the first 30 minutes, then it was all downhill from there, needless to say my mind left me and I felt totally, utterly confused! It was not my best day to study! I must say my teacher Bittia is very patient and is willing to work at my pace which makes me feel like...Jump to full entry
Jul 4, 2012 - Happy Independence Day!!
En l'escuela today was conversation day. I'm surprised by the number of little kids at our school--Ranging in age from 5 to 16!! They are with their parents who are also studying. What a great family vacation! My homework last night was to write about a tradition from Nova Scotia. I chose to talk about the Apple Blossom Festival en primavera. I did well conversing in Spanish about apples(manzanas)-at least in my mind anyway. After our break---which is a treat-fresh coffee and a little old abuela comes with homemade tostadas, tamales and...Jump to full entry
Jul 3, 2012 - Day 2--supposedly it gets easier!
So... Supposedly the second day gets easier...NO!!!! You have to remember everything from yesterday and then add today's lesson! Tomorrow I will be crazy! Although, it is conversation, so no writing notes, although tonight's homework is to write about a tradicion de Nova Scotia...hhhhmmm I have to write about something to talk about tomorrow! I must say, for the price of the classes and the home stay($200 per week), it is an amazing deal, to sit under the trees, en le jardin(in the garden), converse and write in Spanish 1 on 1 with a local...Jump to full entry
Jul 2, 2012 - mi primera clase
Last night I went for platos tipicos at la Fonda de calle real, a typical Guatemalan restaurant. I had quesos fundidos( cheese fondue) and sopa frijoles(black bean soup). A delicious meal, but quite filling. I have met my housemates-Alexis from California and a couple from Australia--okay she is Emma he is T???--but I have learned the daughter's name-Daniela! Give an old man a chance! Bittia is my teacher, I don't know if i am making a joke or if I am the joke, but she is at least laughing!! My first class was beginning review-thank...Jump to full entry
Okay the title is misleading...they don't celebrate Canada Day here, although yesterday was Military Day! Girl Guides and Scouts were marching around Central Park singing and carrying flags. Needless to say I ate a light dinner, with vino tinto(red wine) and headed home as I was exhausted from being awake 20 hours straight! I fell asleep around 6:30 pm, the fireworks began at sundown and continued into the night---beautiful display next door and I was able to watch out my bedroom window as I lay in bed! and I awoke this morning at 8:00am!...Jump to full entry
Jun 30, 2012 - Arrived!-searching for Jim Goldsmith!
As I arrived, coming into Guatemala is fairly easy and straightforward-it also helps that I did it 6 months ago! As I went out to the "pick up" area I saw my name--Darren Fanay! Yes even here they get it wrong!Oh well...the driver had been waiting since morning for Jim Goldsmith, but he seems to be a No-Show!! He explained everything in perfect Spanish, needless to say I nodded and smiled and I got the jist of the conversation! Now to actually respond in spanish! Well since my last visit, Guatemala looks very lush and and green, perhaps the...Jump to full entry

Mar 19, 2012 - Antigua
Made it to Antigua and had a lovely three days. Went to Pacaya to see the lava but it was overcast and pissing with rain the whole time so it was miserable and no lava was to be seen. I am at Utila right now and the dive shop computer doesn't have a slot for me to update my photos. But for an idea of Antigua you can look up my original mytripjournal.com/callum in September. But after Antigua is Copan Ruinas, Honduras! UPDATE!!!! PHOTOS ADDED! 29MarJump to full entry
Jan 15, 2012 - Chichicastenenga & Antigua, Guatemala
This morning we headed back to Antigua via Chichicastenengo. The reason our stay in Antigua was broken up is that the big markets we're visiting today in Chichicastenengo were open on Sunday but not on Monday. The tour would typically go straight from Copan to the Panajachel, and then finish in Antigua. This market place is insane. There's no such thing as personal space, and you have to be very careful about not being robbed or have our pockets picked. In a lot of ways this just employs a more stringent version of big city street smarts....Jump to full entry
