Nov 7, 2006 - Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala

Today we went across Lake Atitlan to Santiago. We took a water taxi to the other side of the volcano from San Pedro where we were yesterday to another small town wedged between the volcanos and the lake. We were immediately greeted with a throng of people looking to sell us various tipica goods and lots of young boys looking to take us to the local Mayan god Maximo. We were easily charmed by young Francisco who offered to take us to the home where Maximo was for the year. Maximon (San Simon) is a local Mayan god who is given offerings of...

Nov 6, 2006 - San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

Today we ventured across the lake to San Pedro La Laguna, which is another town across from Panajachel. It is a small town that seems to have been built with space conservation in mind. The few streets in town are cobble stone and very steep, as it is built into the side of Volcan Atitlan. We walked around town to explore, and realized quickly that many streets just end without any warning, and you need to continue along the pathway that has been worn by others traveling between the corn fields and people's yards. It was interesting how...

Nov 5, 2006 - Panajachel, Guatemala

We arrived Sunday after a few days of long travel. Copan to Guatemala City 5 hours on a bus...an hour to Antigua, a little sleep and then a 3 hour chicken bus to Panajachel.. but we are here now on Lago de Atitlan. Panajachel "Gringotenengo" is a tourist town on the shores of Lake Atitlan. The lake sits between two large Volcanos and is stunningly beautiful. We have found a nice place to stay and will spend the next few days touring the lake areas. Upon arrival, we were greeted with the weekend chaos that takes place in any tourist...

Oct 30, 2006 - Back in Pana...

My parents arrived early morning, I met them at the airport and we took off in a shuttle for Panajachal by Lago de Atitlan. We relaxed the first day, and just checked out the situation in town and planned our trip across the lake to Santiago de Atitlan the next day. I suggested this so we could se the famous church from the 1500s and it is also the church where Fr Rother has his heart buried. He was a priest from Oklahoma who was gunned down by Rios Montts death squads in the 80s. Also, there is the shrine of Maximon an evil saint who is...

Oct 4, 2006 - Xela who??

I've been in Panajachel a couple of days now and let me tell you it is SO SO much better than Xela. In fact Xela was so bad that we have decided it is never to be spoken of again and coincidentally I accidently deleted all photos of that place from my camera! I arrived in Panajachel on the day of their annual town festival and this place really knows how to party! Its never going to sound as good to try to describe in words but I'll give it a go... There was this enormous street party/ carnival complete with rides and fireworks. The...

Aug 29, 2006 - SAN PEDRO LA LAGUNA 1 - Guatemala

Bin in San Pedro de Laguna meiner Verschnaufspause gelandet.

Jul 20, 2006 - ChiChi

Chichicastenango is known for one main thing: its HUGE market, which extends for blocks and occurs every Thursday and Sunday. It attracts busloads of tourists and , consequently, is a very "touristy" experience. The vendors often quote high prices, hoping to get them, but will then drop their prices if they smell a sale. Some vendors are downright pushy. Especially little kids, who pull at your clothes demanding that you buy their little dolls, or wrist bracelets, or other trinkets. Despite the way the market has evolved into a...

May 20, 2006 - Lago Atitlan (Panajachel / San Pedro la Laguna)

We left Antigua benind us for a night and took a shuttle bus to the western highlands on Saturday. We went to the small town of Panajachel, which sits on the lake of Atitilan. We decided to use it as base camp for seeing some of the many Mayan vllages that surround the lake. Our bus left at 5.30am from Antigua and had us there by 7.30. As our hotel was not opened we decided to get some breakfast in a restaurant across the road before our boat left at 8.30am,. not a wise move as it transpired! I decided to get a cream cheese bagel and coffee...
