Jul 30, 2010 - Flores & Tikal

We’re currently in Flores, an island in a lake in Guatemala. It’s a really small place but pretty with restaurants overlooking the lake. The hostel we’re staying in is also really nice, our room is a treehouse! It has no windows so we were really worried about getting bitten alive, but so far so good. Today we went on a day trip to the Mayan ruins in Tikal. The bus left at 4.30am to avoid the midday heat, so we’re exhausted now. The ruins were different to the others I’ve visited as they were set in the middle of a jungle. We saw spider...

May 22, 2010 - Tikal - Stadt der Mayas

May 21, 2010 - Welcome to the Island!

Mar 16, 2010 - The Departure

Whenever I have to get up early to pack the remainder of my personal effects, I feel nauseous. In my clouded head, I invariably miss something. In New Orleans one year, it was a power cord for my computer, in Mexico, a sweater, in California, a bathing suit. I hate it. The sound of the howler monkeys wakes me at an unreasonable hour. As I pull my final laundry off the line, Slowburn turns around the corner. I don’t have the energy to engage her. “Comin’ to see Phoebe?” “Phoebe?” “The jaguar.” Crap. I have no pics of the jaguar…I...

Mar 15, 2010 - Sharmini's Last Day

Before I begin to describe the day, I have a quick addendum to make. On Friday morning, Stu and Max (of the French) get into quite the argument. Stu lays into him for his arrogance, his reluctance to help, and his general, immature and unnecessary demeanor. It was a sight to behold. And yes, it feels like a scene out of Beverly Hills 90210. I am in line for breakfast and can’t turn away from the drama unfolding. My respect for Stu triples. You have to commend him for his follow through. Awesome. Okay, back to today. It is Sharmini’s last...

Mar 14, 2010 - Still Drunk

Pretty much 3 hours after we crawl into bed, spinning with rum, we wake up to feed the animals. Rumour has it, we are still drunk, ridiculously drunk. Thank God Alejandro has a sense of humour about it all. I was expecting to find a sea of hung over regretful faces. Instead, people waddle into quarantine, stifling giggles, and desperately choking down water. Feeding monkeys when you are drunk is 1/3 terrifying, 1/3 hilarious, and 1/3 running through fudge. Things were going really smoothly, until a monkeys moist anus rested against my neck....

Mar 13, 2010 - Best Rum In The World

For sure, today will be another Starbucks day. Scorpion dreams caused restless sleep…for Joe too. Morning feed is, as always, a pleasure. Fiona and I make a great team, though both of us are guilty of pointing and saying ‘ah’ far too much. After breakfast…hard boiled eggs and tortillas…Alejandro says that we, as a group (but really implying Fiona and I), have to spend less time in the monkey cages after we place the food. He knows it’s lovely and entertaining, but makes the solid point that we cannot have the monkeys bonding to us....

Mar 12, 2010 - the TITCIDENT

I have perfected getting up exactly 4 minutes before I need to be in quarantine. Showers are now reserved for the afternoon (and the water is getting progressively more acceptable…may have something to do with this ridiculous heat wave). Today, Joe, Nestle, and Stu have been placed in Crienza (Spanish for Nursery). This is home to the youngest and possibly noisiest birds onsite. Unlike yesterday, Nestle arrives early, donning massive headphones to accompany her iPod. Listening to music is frowned upon but given that everything she does is...

Mar 11, 2010 - Sad start to the day

Today starts on a very sad note. The kinkajou is found dead. BACKSTORY: The kinkajou who tried to bite me on my first day, is brought in because it’s been bitten by a bot fly. We’ve heard about these creatures in the Indiana Jones films. One bite from said fly deposits eggs into the victim. After a period of incubation, the eggs hatch within. The grubs eat off the tissue of their new found host. This continues until maturity is reached, whereby the adolescent flies emerge through the host’s skin. What’s scary is the fact that humans are...

Mar 10, 2010 - Another Day Of Anti-malarials

I will warn you, today is anti-malarial day so this will be a short one. Today is the day I am moved to the monkeys. I have been waiting for a moment like this ever since I was around 3. Every Christmas and Birthday, I kept asking my parents for a baby chimp. They, understandably, never said yes. Once, during a visit to the Calgary Stampede in 1979, I saw a man with a chimp pet named Rebecca. I through an outrageous tantrum, cursed my parents and their parade of lies. (My parents, as a means to keep my quiet, had told me that people...
