Jul 13, 2011 - Tikal et Flores!!!

Hello!

Jun 25, 2011 - Tikal

On the way to Flores our group decided to spend a bit of extra money and take a private van so that we could take a detour to the ruins of Tikal. These are probably the most impressive ruins I have seen so far and are really quite large. It took about three hours to walk all of the way through them as there are so many and some of them take a while to get to the top. I also had the opportunity to see and hear quite a few different Howler monkeys which are really quite cool. These monkeys sound absolutely ferocious from a distance as their...

Jun 25, 2011 - Flores

Flores is a nice but very small place. The island where we stayed could easily be walked around in about 15-20 minutes with a very casual pace. Regardless, I really liked this place. The view was fantastic from the hotel, the people were really friendly, and it felt like the perfect place to just chill for a day after a long travel day. I didn't stay long in Flores but I did take a few pictures of this town. You can find them here.

Feb 1, 2011 - Flores, Guatemala

The 30th we got a ferry to Belize City before grabbing a local bus to Flores Guatemala - our first local bus experience. In Flores we forked out for a hotel with private hot water bathroom - yessssssssss! We wandered around the island and watched the sunset over the lake. We had an early night as we had to get up at 4am the next day for the Tikal sunrise tour. The 31st we were up at 4am and on a bus at 430am heading out to the Tikal ruins. We had a 5 hour guided tour around the ruins and climbed a pyramid that will be closed to the public...

Jan 26, 2011 - Tikal

After a couple of days in Livingston we took another boat up the Rio Dulce, another beautiful boat ride, to the town of Rio Dulce where we caught a bus north to Flores. This was our base for visiting Tikal, site of a Mayan civilisation, which has been partially recovered from the jungle. We camped overnight so that we could go in first thing in the morning and had the place to ourselves. It was eerily quiet, apart from all the birds and the amazingly loud howler monkeys. I am still trying to perfect my impersonation of a howler monkey for...

Dec 13, 2010 - Flores, Guatemala

I am finally traveling!! Even if it is just for a few weeks. I'm currently in Flores, Guatemala and it is absolutely great. Really relaxed atmosphere, a European feel with paved streets and little alleyways, surrounded by a lake (yep, it is an island ;-) and super nice people. It also appears little food markets popup on the lake shores at night, which enhances the wonderful atmosphere... The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal are also very close, but I plan to see them with Louise in April, so will not be seeing them at the moment. Tomorrow...

Sep 28, 2010 - Tikal

Another entry not here...arrrggg. .Our visit to Tikal was done in the rain, mostly drizzle, but it did get going more than a few times. Carlos hired an English speaking guide named Javier, yes ladies you can change the J to C. Very handsome young man with lots of knowledge about Tikal and the area. I managed to do take a fall in the first 30 minutes of our 4/5 hour tour. Down I went camera, and umbrella first and me falling nano second by nano second later. Weird how slow times goes when you are falling! The umbrella completely bent and...

I did write all about Flores and for some reason none of the pictures or text uploaded. So here I am starting again and I have so much to say, about other things. we drove from Antigua to Flores about 8/10 hours. We passed one accident, which we are sure has casualties and small car hit a semi filled with cinder blocks. Carlos are tour guide speaks English very well and knows the area and route. It is his business, the van we are in is brand new! Very comfortable and just the three of us. We stop at a little restaurant that served the most...

August 24, 2010 We arrived in El Remante early. Around 11am or so we got a room a decided to hike into the Biotopo cerro Chahui. The trail head is only about 2km’s from the hotel so why not? It was a 6km hike that took us 3 hours. After seeing the same same for a few hours – blah. We came back to the hotel had a shower and crashed early. We had to get up because we want to leave to Tikal at 5:30am to be the first to enter at 6:00am. We got to the ticket gate and the entry fee was 150q/pp!! I just abut shit myself. We paid the 300q and went...

Aug 22, 2010 - Poptun - Guatemalal

August 21, 2010 We left Lanquin today. The first day we arrived in Lanquin ‘bout 1pm and we did nothing as we (I) was spent from the days adventure through the derrumbe. On day two we went to the ‘Grutas de Lanquin’. The caves were a lot better than ‘Grutas Rey Marcos’. I don’t know why they call them ‘grutas’ they are ‘caves’. Anyway, the ‘gruta’ had lights strung throughout it for about 200m. We could have kept going but our petzels have a broad light rather than a ‘spot’ type of light. We could only see about 12’ in front of ourselves...
