Jun 28, 2007 - Pacaya

Hi All, Spent the last few days roaming the town, sorting flight to costa rica and hotel for the week. There are loads of hotels and I found a good clean one at low price. we have to share the bathroom and toilet with the otehr guest and we can use the kitchen. Mostly families here so lots of babies crying and kids throwing tantrums. Styed for 2 days and headed to next one which is slightly more expensive but it has your own bathroom and toilet and it has no windows to the outside. only to the inside corridors. it is of course surrounded...

Sep 29, 2006 - LANQUIN - Guatemala

Jan 25, 2006 - A Day at Palenque

Awoke to rain this morning. We did get up and get ready for an 8:00 breakfast, not really believing the rain would end and we could be on our way to the ruins at 9:00. Oh, we of little faith. At 9:00 three taxis arrived to take our group of 12 to the ruins. Juan would be arriving later to join us and the van had already returned to Villahermosa. We got there pretty quickly and had time to explore before Juan was due at 11:15. Through reading and lectures before the trip I had read that all Maya cities had three structures in common. All had...

Feb 22, 2005 - Semuc Champey

Get up at 8 am and eat a good breakfast. The coffee here is good, not the nescaf that is prepared in abundance throughout Guatemala. My stomach is a bit touchy still from some meal or other dating back possibly to lunch in Chichi. A few trips to the eco-toilets, however, in addition to a cold splash of water on the face spur excitement for the wonders we anticipate at Semuc Champey. By nine o'clock the group is pretty well assembled. Lennie and Hannah from England, Jon from Canada, Amy (pissed-bird) also British, our three Dutch...

Feb 20, 2005 - El Retiro ¨retreat¨ in Lanquin, Guatemala

Few places on our journey so far have trapped us in their web like El Retiro in Lanquin. A tiny town in the valley, Lanquin was blessed with electricity only five years ago, and the dirt road leading to it is fairly untraveled. To find such a wonderful refuge in such a town was amazing. Perhaps that was part of its draw. We had been yearing a bit for the company of other travelers, as we had been through something of a dry spell for most of Guatemala. Our thirst for company was certainly quenched at this great hostel. An all-inclusive...

Oct 24, 2004 - Guatemala: Lanquin

The next day we were off again - next stop Lanquin. Lanquin is kind of in the middle of Guatemala and not super easy to get to from El Remate. The buses are more rickety and the roads far more bumpy than we had been used to in Mexico, and as we had mainly been traveling on boats since Belize it was our first 'proper' bus journey in Guatemala. This journey involved 5 changes on 3 micro buses, 1 boat journey and 2 'chicken buses': old reconditioned American school buses in which they manage to cram entire villages, including lifestock; there...
