Sep 18, 2018 - Day 4 - Guatemala - Cultural Immersion

Today started off with another early morning at work in back to back meetings and putting out fires everywhere ;-) To top it all off I have been fighting a cold since last Wednesday and today it finally hit me hard and I could not get my nose to stop running. However, I refuse to allow a cold to keep me from exploring while I'm in another country. After finishing up meetings Aida took Shauna and I out to explore more of Guatemala City. We first stopped to get gas where apparently every gas station has someone who fills your car for you. The...

Sep 17, 2018 - Day 3 - Guatemala - Work, work, & work

Well folks not much to say here other than today was focused all around work. I launched my 20th line of business today in both Guatemala and Winnipeg. It was a super busy day with lots of things keeping me on my toes. Biggest plus was being able to enjoy the sunset over the mountains as the day ended. Then it was back to hotel for a quiet evening of room service and TV. Looking to explore some more of Guatemala tomorrow after work!

Sep 16, 2018 - Day 2- Guatemala - Lazy Sunday

The day started with Shauna and I checking out our site in Guatemala City and seeing the beautiful site within the 4 grand towers. The view from the towers is amazing and the agents get to see all the beautiful mountains around them while working. It was then back to our hotel to enjoy a traditional Guatemalan buffet and when I say buffet it was a MASSIVE buffet. There were so many amazing foods to try it was impossible to enjoy everything. We even got to enjoy live music while enjoying our lunch. Music is a huge part of the Guatemalan...

Jun 26, 2015 - Day 1 - To Guatemala

I was all packed and ready to go on Thursday evening. I noticed that there were itchy blisters starting to form on my hands and feet and hoped that they wouldn't spread like what I had on my leg. When we left for the airport at 5:30am I decided to wear gloves in case the blisters on my hands got weepy since the blisters looked like they were spreading. When we arrived in Guatemala by 10:30am (12:30 Florida time) the blisters were larger and some were very red. Now I was worried. They also were painful and I thought it might be shingles. By...

Jan 16, 2015 - Guatemala City

Left UK reluctantly with continuing bad cold but jet lag seems to have solved it. The flights worked out well with empty seats to stretch out on during the London to Dallas leg - perhaps a dose of Ebola keeps people off flights to those destinations! The second leg was not so kind very full and very noisy so I was glad to get to the hotel which is very close to the airport and just hit the shower and bed. The hotel is quaint but comfortable and my room has a patio onto the small garden which is decorated at the moment with my laundry. The...

These maps are clearer than the one on the main page. If you right click and choose 'open in a new tab' you will get the full image. The journal map is useful for my different stages of journey. Jun 14, 2014 - The Return

I spent half my time in Cuba plotting my next move if I returned home without a summer internship, a job, or any other big responsibility set to ground me. Fortunately for me, there was little to no internet connection in Cuba so I couldn’t set anything real up so the list of cheap countries filled my mind instead. On my short list were Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala in that order. I began checking flights whenever I would get online and send out mass emails to organizations and non-for-profits in all the areas. Mexico was top...

Mar 17, 2014 - I am in Guatemala now!

I am now in Guatemala I came to Guatemala to serve on behalf of the Rotary Foundation as a Cadre to review and report about three global grant projects. I have been here almost two weeks and have traveled extensively from Guatemala City to various small towns and villages in the western highlands where several schools are being served by the Rotary projects. The first two days involved meetings with Rotarians from two clubs in Guatemala City as well as with representatives of a non-profit organization that provides leadership and essential...

Going Down the Road

Jan 13, 2014 - To the city

Up at 7:00 with a rumble and church bells… unable to get back to sleep I tried to take a shower. Today there was no hot water at all. Sigh. Washed as best I could and continued packing. Resorted a couple things, checked the weather in VA (ugh) and headed down for breakfast. The place was a mess – looks like most folks had already eaten. I asked the server to get a table for six ready (should have been five). It took a bit but we got the table and the rest of the crew showed up and we ordered breakfast. Seems they were out of black tea so I...

Jan 11, 2014 - Finally to Antigua

The flight took an hour. We were served a snack (sandwich, chips, drink) but otherwise unremarkable – except the steward was standing at the exit with a bowl of mints! Otherwise the airport was quite easy. We met our ride and an hour later we were in Antigua. The roads are really bumpy here and the streets quite narrow. In the dark it’s hard to tell anything. In any event we checked into the hotel – the most run down place yet. On the bright side our tour starts at 10:00 Am so some extra sleep tonight!
