Oct 8, 2017 - Helgoland

Back again? The weather has been dismal since leaving Belgium. The hurricanes that I missed in Florida have pursued me to Europe. For the past 2 days virtually the entire German rail system has ground to a standstill. I'm in Cuxhaven, a little port on the North Sea, hoping for the weather to clear enough for the ferries to run. The seas can be treacherous, something I experienced on a Navy "observation platform" back in 1978. But that's another story. Helgoland is an island about 70 kilometers to the Northwest of Cuxhaven. It was a German...

Oct 7, 2017 - Heading Back Across Germany

Day 27 - Saturday 7th October - Wittenborn, Germany Moving West across Northern Germany today. Main features of the morning were the rain & all the red traffic lights that we met along the road. We did have one bit of fun at one point when the road was completely closed & we had to divert around along some pretty narrow back roads. Some very interesting moments as we were squeezed off the edge of the road by buses coming the other way. We arrived at our selected camp site at midday, set up & had our lunch. It was still raining so we were...

Aug 30, 2017 - Lubeck, Germany

We drove through Lubeck on our way home from Copenhagen; we had very fond memories of Lubeck given it was our first European camping experience in 2005. We had left Hamburg and the comfortable arms of our friends Brita and Gabriela who helped us import our motorhome, Gypsy, into Germany and were now truly on our own. Lubeck, a UNESCO World Heritage city, described as a "12th Century gem with over 1,000 historical buildings" is one of the founding members of the Hanseatic League. You enter the city through the Holstentor (gate) built in 1464...

Sep 24, 2015 - refugees, traveling in the right direction

After a quick ride by train through Germany, Anyway, a luxury ride with breakfast included, a private shower and toilet at our disposal in a very small cabin, we finally arrived in Hamburg on time. The disembarking of the train was even more chaotic than I could imagine. Cars left the train, driving just through the station, over the platforms, between the commuters during rush hour, unbelievable, is this Germany?????? Stopped at the petrol station a final time to refuel the vehicle and 30 minutes later the navvi-lady announced; "you have...

Sep 2, 2015 - Refugees, traveling in the wrong direction

September 2 We departed from Elmshorn on the morning of September 2, heading Southbound for Bad Kissingen in northern Bavaria, also known as Frankenland. The weather was good, no rain, that's not too bad. No traffic jam, even better, but numerous road works. I hate the German transport minister!! He promised to fix the german Autobahn network the coming years fore a mere €4,5bn. Why didn't he wait until we were through? Anyway, all according to plan. The hotel, Wyndham Garden, at Bad Kissingen appeared to be in the city center, no surprise,...

Aug 28, 2015 - Cruise day 7 - At Sea

Today we are at sea all day - and need to ensure we change our time due to the crossing of the time line. I decide to add up my receipts to see how we are going against our drinks package - needs to pay for itself you know!! So I add it up and do not believe it - so do it again - can you believe we have already spent 70 euro over our package cost? Still have a full day at sea to add to this - so yes you could say it has paid for itself!! I think it is all David as I am sure I have not been drinking that much - hehehehe. So no rush this...

Aug 23, 2015 - Cruise day 2 - At Sea

Well not the best night at all. I woke up about 3.30am and the boat had a little rock up, it was pitch black and I started to have a panic attack!! I managed to breath my way through it but it took a couple of hours to settle myself down. All day at sea today - not sure how I am going to go with that. Anyway we get up and going about 8ish - upstairs to the buffet for breakfast - OMG the food up here is out of this world. I only want a piece of toast. Anyway because we have the drink package we can have barista made coffee instead coffee out...

Aug 22, 2015 - Cruise day 1 - Kiel

We had a lovely sleep last night and a slow morning this morning - not required to do anything at all. So had breaky and a few espresso's (from our lovely espresso machine) - it was so quiet outside. We went out to explore for a bit and there was hardly anyone around. But loved the feel of the place. Back to the room at 10.30am with morning tea and another espresso. We repacked our luggage and popped our cruise labels on. Then stowed it away in the luggage compartment of the apartments. We decided to walk to the Cruise Terminal at the port...

Aug 21, 2015 - Tour day 14 - Kiel

Today we sadly leave our tour friends behind and travel to Kiel in Germany to start our cruise. We caught a taxi to Grae du Nord (Paris North Station) at 6.30am to catch our train to Kiel. We got to the station by 7.00am (1 hour early) but prefer to be early than late. Not much happening here this time of morning. We found a coffee shop open and buy espresso and croissant for 2 euro 95. Enough for me at this time of day. Worked out which platform we needed and boarded about 7.35pm. Train left right on time and we had super comfy seats with...

Jun 12, 2014 - Going Home!

We were up & out early this morning. We wanted to take the water taxi up along the river to visit the statue of the "Little Mermaid", a famous Copenhagen feature. The ride up the river was very pleasant as the boat zigzagged it's way up the river past several landmarks including the Royal Library & the Opera House. We managed to beat the tourist crowd as there were only a couple of people at the statue when we got there. The statue sits on a rock at the waters edge near an old star shaped fortification & is quite small. After taking the...

Jun 9, 2014 - Another visit to the Keil Canal . This time to the locks

We decided to revisit the Kiel Canal. This time to the main locks in Kiel. Driving to the locks we drove over an old bridge with views down onto the canal. We found somewhere to stop (Germany is not very good at providing viewpoints!)and walked onto the bridge. Great views. When we arrived at the locks there was only one small vessel going through so we waited around for a while. Just as we were thinking about to leaving we spotted along the canal a huge container ship coming. A short while after another ship appeared, then another and then...

Jun 8, 2014 - Eutin

Our guide book suggested we should visit the small town of Eutin in the lakeland area of Schleswig- Holstein. A little gem. As well as a lovely lake side area it also had an old Schloss with gardens which in the warm sunshine were very enjoyable to wander around but they could have done with a little TLC. After our walk we indulged ourselves at the Schloss cafe.
