Apr 24, 2018 - A Fairytale Day in the Black Forest

“A forest of these trees is a spectacle too much for one man to see.” David Douglas Germany’s Black Forest got its name from the conifers that block out much of the light below giving the region a mysterious aura. Add castles, cuckoo clocks and tiny villages to the scene and you have a real-life fairytale! According to legend the Brothers Grimm were inspired by the forest in their native country when they wrote Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. Ben and I rode this beautiful region today. Up early, we left France after having...

Jul 2, 2013 - Drive and hike in the Black Forest

Today we decided to drive the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse or the Black Forest Highway from Baden –Baden to Freudenstadt. Just 6 km from Baden-Baden we decided to hike through the forest to the Geroldauer waterfall. Although a hot day it was lovely and shady under the tree canopy and the waterfall was quite pretty. Returning to the car we continued through the forest stopping at vista points (by the way not well marked) giving views across the northern Black Forest and down on the Rhine Valley below. Our second walk of the day was around the...

Dec 9, 2010 - Freudanstadt to Colmar

Woke up this morning to the coldest temperatures yet, -4 degrees. The car was covered in snow and ice, and the roadway was slippery as hell. Spent 1/2 an hour trying to clear the ice from the windows (a most painful experience - snow is C-O-L-D!!!!!). Finally got the windows clear enough to start driving and head for France. Quite a nerva wracking experience. Dense fog, snow covered roads, and ice made for a very slow trip out of the alps. Wasn't long before we had crossed the border (again no passport stamp) and into the flat country of...

Dec 7, 2010 - On to Freudenstadt

From Villingen we head northwards to Freudenstadt (http://www.ferien-in-freudenstadt.de/index.php?id=292&L=5) where our hotel is. More of the same magical drive. A lot of small villages to pass through slows us down somewhat but in no way does it diminish the experience. At any moment we expect to see Santa and his reindeers pop out from the trees. A small hitch when we get close to our destination - the GPS keeps steering us to a dead end road, smoe 400m from our destination. After a bit of basic map reading, we soon worked out which way...
