Apr 29, 2014 - Strasbourg & wine tasting in Obernai France

Tour in Strasbourg in am, tour to Obernai in pm, another great dinner on board. At lunch, Kathy replied "nothing" to the "desert?" Question from waiter. See picture#6 for what she got. We tasted 4 of the 7 wines/grapes of the area and discovered a Gerwitziminer snapps but could not taste test. Price was prohibitive. Maybe tomorrow in another shop I will relent and chance a bottle. Tomorrow is Heidleburg. Sorry that the dinner menu pictures do not show up well.

Dec 15, 2013 - Strasbourg, France Christmas Market

The four of us also went to the Strasbourg Christmas Market. It was HUGE. It is the oldest Christmas Market in Europe. Anthony did wonderfully driving across the country line- which is almost like driving across state lines- no one stops you. We parked at a park and ride and caught a bus into town. We walked around- ate pizza and bought a few things. It was really worth the trip just to say "we went to France for the day". The town also has a Notre Dame Cathedral which is very similar to the famous one in Paris- they both have a beautiful...

Dec 8, 2013 - Strasbourg

Saturday morning I enjoyed another taxi to the station this morning with a chatty driver. I was plenty early and got on the high speed train to Strasbourg. It was a quick and quiet ride (2hr 20min). The day was overcast, and there was evidence of rain last night. On arrival in Strasbourg, I decided to take the tram into the center and find my hotel. Should have taken my own advice and got a taxi! It being Saturday, the tram was quite crowded, and the crowds continued once I got off. If Paris had a Christmas Market, Strasbourg on the weekend...

Dec 7, 2013 - Strasbourg, France

Today we are off on a day trip to Strasbourg, France. We heard they have a huge Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market). We took the back roads to avoid the many toll roads on the autoroutes of France. The back country was beautiful with a dusting of snow on the rolling hills and the little towns we traveled though. One thing that we came to realize was that there weren't any gas stations in these towns, which meant no place for a potty stop. We were desperate and had to do like the locals do and pull off along the road side and just go. Our...

Jul 24, 2013 - Memories of the past revisitedmmm

Got moving earlier today, our last day in this region . We decided to spend it in Germany . When we were here 15 years ago we went to Rothenburg odt- the walled Christmas town. We loved it and thought Sarah might too. It is about 2 hours from our hotel and as the day goes on the weather there is not suppose to be nice. So we got our selves up and out by 9. Wahoo!! We then will go to Waldorf where we lived and then back to Heidelberg for dinner at Da Claudia 's Italian restaurant . We don't want to be back too late so that we will have...

Jul 23, 2013 - Day 6 castle in the sky

Day 6 Long days so the "kids " like to sleep in. I actually didn't get up until 8 which is late for me. Sarah and Steve got moving after 9. Oh well it is vacation. By the time we got on the road it is 1100. We are on our way to Orschwiller, France where the Haut-koenigsbourg 12 century castle is, in the Alsace region. Suppose to be beautiful, 700 meters above sea level. From where we park we need to walk s300meters up to get to the castle. I guess it is another training walk day. The castle was amazing in the fact that it was so large...

Jul 20, 2013 - Day 1 & day 2, Mulhouse , Colmar and village

Arrived in Paris at 7:30am. Quickly made it through immigration and customs. We all got our bags. Managed to find our way through the airport and to the car rental. Our only issue was figuring out the car and the cars GPS. Found the GPS but then needed to change it to English . Found the AC and GPS in English, life is good . We are on our way to see Lilli . Yeah So I took a little nap and left sarah to be Steve's co-pilot. When I woke up 90 minutes later she was asleep! And we were slightly off course. Not sure how it happened . As luck...

Apr 5, 2013 - Strasbourg, France

We stayed up an partied a little late last night, but managed to go catch some breakfast and then jumped on the tour bus to Strasbourg. Our guide was a very colorful (and loud) French girl (managed to sleep a little on the bus anyway!). It was bitter cold in Strasburg, but an interesting city. We walked to the Cathedral - quite a hike and us Americans were getting a little nervous about where the bathrooms were. There is only one set of public restrooms in this town. Quite impressive though. The attendant lady cleans each toilet seat after...

Oct 12, 2012 - Day 6 Rhine River-Strasbourg France - Black Forest

Our day started off a little late. Last night they closed down the Rhine due to the fact that there had been heavy rains and the river rose 2 meters in 6 hrs. Which is almost 6 1/2 ft. We were supposed to leave Speyer at 10:30 pm but we left at 5:30 am this morning. The river is moving fast and it is actually the first time I can say I have felt the boat moving. Because of this we had to dock at a different place and then take an hour bus ride into Strasbourg France. We had about an hour walking tour and then time on our own to eat lunch in...
