Oct 28, 2007 - Okay, Bula for real this time!

Hello All! I finally got the chance to sit down at a comp, we have been moving at 100 miles per hour!! Carson is out hiking the "3 sisters" which is in a town called Katoomba two hours outside of Sydney (much like Truckee Cars says..) Echo Point is like the Grand Canyon with trees...that is why I am sitting in here :) Fiji was amazing! As you saw earlier- the first day we were there our tour started. We went straight to town for some shopping, or hounding if you will. Then we went over to a beach to relax, swim, and have a beach BBQ. We...

Sep 25, 2007 - Flat Stanley in Fiji

Bula Everyone! We are now in New Zealand but we spent a wonderful two weeks in Fiji. Most of our time was spent off the West Coast of Nadi (pronounced Nandi) on a place called Mana Island. We stayed in a very traditional Fijian village. The village very basic, no internet, no phones, video games or full time running power. They get their power from generators that only run from around 5:00 p.m. until around 5:00 in the morning. The weather way very hot and humid...it felt like we were in a sauna all day long. We were able to cool off in the...

Sep 25, 2007 - Bula from Fiji

Wow has our time flown by! We have beem in Fiji for about 12 days and we will be heading to New Zealand early on the 26. We had such a wonderful time in Fiji. The people are so very kind and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and at home in their country. Wherever we go the sounds of "Bula!" could be heard. Having spent only one day in Nadi (Nandi) we then headed on a small fishing boat to one on the smaller outlying islands off the west coast of Nadi called Mana. There we spent 9 days relaxing in the sun, swimming and...

Sep 23, 2007 - Fiji

Bula (hello) from Fiji... We arrived in Fiji early on Sunday morning after loosing Saturday to the international date line. (We took off on Sat at 00:35 and arrived on Sunday at 05:00 !!!) We were greeted by a local band playing in the airport, which was lovely. Our chosen hotel/hostel in Nadi was great (Nadi Bay Hotel). We used the tour desk there to book our island hopping trip to the Yasawas Islands (Fiji consists of over 350 islands, we were just visiting 2 of them!) Our first experience of local culture occured when we took a trip to...

Sep 16, 2007 - Burned again ... will I ever learn?

Bula! I've arrived, safe and sound, in Fiji. The Air New Zealand flight from L.A. was uneventful, and in fact we arrived in Nadi about 30 minutes early, about 5:15 a.m. here. Flying at the front of the plane meant I was among the first off, both my bags were on the belt within about 10 minutes, and I was the first to clear customs and head out in search of a taxi. As I expected, when I arrived at the Radisson Hotel, they was no room available for me, and in fact they explained their check in time was 3:30 p.m.! However, they very kindly...

Jun 1, 2007 - Bula from Fiji!

You know you're going to like a place when you get off the place, and before you get to the customs checkpoint, a band greets you with singing and guitar playing, a bunch of guys dressed in brightly coloured tropical shirts and wraparound skirts. Such is the reception in Fiji, where everything is so laid back it's almost horizontal. They warn you about "Fiji Time", where everything runs at a pace determined by the whims of the person in question, and that person generally doesn't give a shit about keeping to any particular timescale. And...

Apr 10, 2007 - Yasawa Islands, Fiji

Beautiful white sandy beaches and the clearest, bluest water I've ever seen... but paradise certainly has its evils! We arrived in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) at 5am, having lost the 25th of March in crossing the date line - pretty cool! I remember feeling that rush of heat as you step off the plane in a hot country, and walking into the airport there were men in floral shirts with flowers behind their ears playing guitars and singing. The first day however, it rained - all day and all night & all the next morning. At the end of the rainy...

Apr 2, 2007 - Rugby, tsunami's and the end.

So our final proper stop of the trip, and that is also pretty much over. We fly to LA tonight at 10pm, and we are spending our final day in a hot sweaty internet cafe in Nadi. Makes little sense, but there is only so much time you can spend sitting round a swimming pool. We've had five nights here in Fiji, the longest we have stopped in the one place since Delhi about 4 months ago, and if the hotel has not quite been luxurious, it did enough, and we had a good view of the ocean from our balcony, though the beach was not so great and we had...

Begbies on Tour

Mar 31, 2007 - Fiji - Nadi

After bobbing offshore for 20min in the rain the Yasawa Flyer finally came into view and we took the quick 30min transfer back to Denarau Island Marina where after watching the mad bus drivers argue over who was going where we finally got on our way to the good accommodation of Nadi Bay Resort, before settling down with a nice dinner watching the evenings entertainment unfold. At the start of our Fiji tour we wondered what the hell we had booked ourselves in for but it all turned out to be a good trip and we will come back for sure. It has...

Mar 30, 2007 - Fiji - Mamanuca Islands - Bounty

After checking out, it started to pour with rain, so we headed to the inside dining area to try and pass the time reading books, eating lunch and chatting to our swedish buddies. When the Yasawa Flyer arrived we embarked on our 2hr ride south to the Mamanuca Island Group which consists of 20 islands basking in a large lagoon formed by the Malolo Barrier Reef and Viti Levu island. These islands are home to a few movie sets including Tom Hanks's Castaway and reality TV shows Treasure Island, Survivor Fiji and our very own UK Celebrity Love...

Mar 25, 2007 - Fiji - Nadi

Bula from Fiji! Flying with Air Pacific our flight only took 3hrs to get to Nadi, Fiji. Expecting a lush green island with turquoise sea and bright blue sky we were met by thunder clouds, rain and a lovely view of most villages half under water! Off the plane and walking to passport control we were met by a Fijian band, which was a lovely touch. Next it was the usual fun bit of being harassed by lots of locals wanting you to stay at their hostel and to take their taxi. Somehow we ended up being ushered upstairs to a small office with a...

Mar 21, 2007 - Fiji

An early start, saw me catching a 7:45 flight to Fiji. Landing in Fiji was a sharp contrast to New Zealand, heat and humidity, but unfortunately no sun :o(. I was met at the airport by Semi and Mary from the resort Mama's Tropic of Capricorn, as had been recommended by Bekka and Stephan. A very homely place, that I would highly recommend if you want to not do an awful lot, Mama herself is great and treats everyone just like her own children (whether that is good or not I leave up to you). The only downside being the enlargement program the...
