Mar 3, 2009 - Fiji - Sun Sand And Blue Sky - Specific To The Pacific!

What a beautiful forst day here in Fiji. We arrived late yesterday aftern oon at the end of a typical tropical shower and it was evident that the floods a month or so ago were still causing problems - road surfaces are badly damaged and there are still large pools of water in anumber of places. We had a majestic sunset last night and we awoke to beautiful blue skies today with the odd fluffy white cloud. Our resort looks straight out onto the sea and our pool has palm trees lining the pthways and is just a few metres from the sea....

Jan 25, 2009 - FIJI!!!! on Fijian time

Fiji is great so far. But the internet is quite slow, so I'll try to cram everything into this entry. It was a long and boring journey here, so we'll skip that and get to the good stuff. The first day we spent relaxing by the pool and fighting our bodies urge to sleep. We managed to stay up to a normal time and were adjusted to the time by morning. If my calculations are correct we are 17 hours ahead of you midwest folk. Yep that's right, tomorrow will be good. I know. It started raining mid-way through the day on Friday. So while in Fiji...

Jan 10, 2009 - Big Trouble in Little Fiji

I will update all of the other blogs when I have a chance. Looks like I will have plenty of time tomorrow. We got up at 4 am to get to the airport and fly to Fiji. We couldn't land in Fiji at noon as planned, as we were told that there is a cyclone. Go figure. We flew around for an hour or so, and finally had to fly an hour and a half each way to Samoa for fuel. We were finally able to land in Fiji 7 hours late, but the entire island is flooded, so we could not get to our hotel. We were able to call and cancel and are now in a barracks-...

Sep 11, 2008 - Robinson Crusoe Island

Went on a tour and visited Robinson Crusoe Island (that's not it's proper name but is what all the tours call it) Went snorkelling here, but was pretty rubbish compared to the other places we had been shown at the resort. Nowhere near as many fish. Had a BBQ lunch followed by a few shows (pics attached), and a walk through the jungle. Saw a huge turtle which was good. Very touristy place though and if honest not as good as the waterfall tour, but still good.

Sep 9, 2008 - Fake Fiji!

Yes, more time spending waiting for a bus, so another update. Today we went to Port Denarau just outside of Nadi. This is where all of the posh resorts (Hilton, Sheraton etc) are based. As soon as we were entering the island, we noticed that the World had suddenly turned from Fijian into Western. Couldn't see a Fijian in sight (apart from the bus driver), and the lack of Taxis asking us if we wanted a lift somewhere. Had wondered where all of the Westerners go when they come to Fiji... Here! Must admit, the hotels looked a bit nicer than...

Sep 6, 2008 - Day 6 from Fiji

Hello! Internet is terribly slow as we are quite remote, so thought I would just update on the past week. Have been here a week now, such a different world compared to California Well went for another surf on Thursday. Was smaller this time around 6-8ft face, but pretty windy so surfed Wilkes' Passage. Still very good and was in for around 4 hours. After that went for a snorkel around the coral reef just off of Namotu Island. Did attempt some photos with an underwater case, but was not successful In the evening, we sat and just drank Kava...

Sep 1, 2008 - Bula!

Hello from Fiji (more specifically Viti Levu) Arrived yesterday afternoon, after having a 5 hour wait in Auckland airport from out LA flight. Weather hot and sunny but a bit breezy as by the coast, which is nice. Went for a surf this morning at Namotu. Was in the water for around 4 hours. Certainly a different experience from Croyde. Caught the "skip" from resort out to sea, and got dropped off right by the break. Sea crystal clear and warm, saw a turtle and a ray while surfing. On the way back, went to an island exposed only at low tide,...

Aug 5, 2008 - Goodbye NZ, hello Fiji!

We weren't sure what to expect from Fiji, but as we walked through the airport seeing the big smiles from the locals and hearing their lovely welcome 'Bula', we couldn't help but think 'we're going to enjoy this!'. Fiji's not cheap(!), so we were lucky to be able to couch surf for half of our time here: our couch surfing host sent a driver to pick us up (we'd never been met at the airport by a driver with our names on a card before!). Finau, our host, lives in Viseisei village (where the first Fijians arrived), and gave us a fantastic...

Jun 23, 2008 - Fiji - Viti Levu

Thurs 19 June ’08 Fiji We landed at 5am local time on Saturday morning. It was 11pm on Thursday in Los Angeles when we took off 10 hrs earlier. We had no idea that Boeing had gone into the time machine business. Our plan was to check into the hotel we had booked for two nights and in that time hire a moped to get out and about hunting for a nice cheap apartment to rent. As soon as we checked into our room, the morning turned from one of glorious Pacific Island sunshine, into one of thunderous tropical downpour. Drat. We twiddled our thumbs...

Jun 14, 2008 - Nadi (part 2)

Last day and we were delighted to find that we had been treated to a lie in. I took full advantage of this, got up early and promptly fell asleep on the beach in the morning sun (working on that all important tan!) Only really heading back to Nadi today we didn’t do as much and only had the one stop at some mud pools in Sabeto Valley. The pool felt disgusting. It was just warm water to the waist and then the rest of you just sunk into the muddy mess at the bottom. I spent most of my time trying to convince a squeamish French girl that I had...

Grand Day Out

Jun 9, 2008 - Nadi

I love arriving places at night. You're never sure of what the country is going to look like until the morning. I am now in Fiji and am loving the sunshine. I have just spent the day relaxing by the pool working on getting back my tan. Bliss! I'm off to explore the main island of Viti Levu tomorrow and then in a couple of days time I'm flying up to Vanua Levu to take part in the Tibewanted project (an eco-tourism projject where I live in a rural Fijian community) for seven days. Then I will be island hopping the rest of my time away until...
