Jul 13, 2010 - Fly to Fiji

A day to be organised! We had a plane to catch. We did that pretty well, getting to the airport in good time. We dropped the car off, which went very smoothly. There was paperwork hassle to deal with at the airport, so there was a bit of a rush to somehow get online and get some of the US immigration stuff done in time. But we were early enough to get those things done and fly on to Fiji with little hanging over us needing to be done. Before leaving Sneeze's in the morning, she'd dug out her photos from the 80's, when we were part of that...

Jun 16, 2010 - Monkey beach

I woke up determined that we had to do something about where we were. I had expected that, given a night's sleep after our journey, Riffat would be OK to leave the room, at least to eat. But she hadn't, so it was time to remove the problem of those steps from the situation. So, I went out and found somewhere smaller, with less atmosphere but right in amongst everything else. It was a good room, with a big outside patio area we could use. It turned out to be a good move in almost every way. Riffat perked up a lot and we were able to go out...

May 7, 2010 - Fabulous Fiji!

Sunday 2 May 2010 Our first full day on Treasure Island on Fiji and we are all kicking back and enjoying the extra space and the fact that we are not on the road – as well as some beautiful weather and the hospitality of the Fijian people. Being called to go and see something outside – better go... Friday 7th May 2010 We are really, really enjoying our week’s R & R in Fiji. The Weather has been very good – a couple of cloudy days but otherwise sunny and always a perfect temperature, and the atmosphere on the island is relaxed and friendly....

Apr 28, 2010 - Fiji

April 8th Courtney and I left for the airport at 4:00 am and parted ways two hours later. Courtney had a direct flight to New York, while I had a day and a half going to Nadi, Fiji. On the way to L.A. from Houston, someone had an asthma attack and passed out. We had to make an emergency landing in Pheonix for an hour and then to L.A. Most people missed there connecting flights but I still had a 5 hour layover in L.A. which I spent at target. I then had a 9 hour flight to Nadi which thanks to Ambian I slept most of the way. April 10th I...

Apr 24, 2010 - Fabulous Fiji - 1

Bula !! Everywhere you go on Fiji people greet you with the call of Bula, meaning Welcome or Hello !! The Fijians are a friendly bunch and they do go out of their way to make you welcome. After landing in Nadi Airport on the West Coast, I was picked up and taken to The Bluewater backpacker hostel in Newtown just outside Nadi. The road to the hostel revealed a mishmash of building styles, transport and people which made it clear that I had finally left the "first" world and that I had well and truly started my world tour. Whilst the native...

Mar 27, 2010 - Fiji Time

Bula! Welcome in Fiji, and maybe the most used word here. Fiji is officially the most laid-back and relaxed place in the world. The famous saying here is that everything happens on "Fiji Time"....that is, whenever someone can be bothered! We left Auckland last Saturday and flew up to Nadi, which is the main town on the western side of the main island of Fiji. We spent our first night in downtown Nadi, one of the less safe places we have been, but given that it was raining and beer was back to being cheap we stayed in and sat at the bar. It...

Feb 27, 2010 - Final Fiji

We transported by Ferry back to the main Island close to the airport Nadi. The Ferry ride today was great, the islands clear and once again no rain. On our arrival we enjoyed our pool at the Radisson and happy hour. On wake up the next day we received text messages wondering if all was OK...Why would it not be OK in paradise...well what everyone else knew was that we where under tsunami warnings....we were the last to know. Our friends later emailed us that they where woken at 3am to travel to the hills for hours, our neighbor hotels on the...

Los estudiantes estaban descalsos porke a sus papas no...

Feb 4, 2010 - Fiji

We had quite a stressful journey to Fiji. Unfortunately our flight agent had booked our connection without taking account of the changes to daylight saving times so we only ended up with 55 minutes to connect at Auckland for our flight to Nadi. After many phone calls to try and resolve the issue or change the flight with no success we were told if we ran the whole way to the international terminal we may be able to our flight. We did as advised and only just made it, unfortunately our luggage didn't! Fortunately they were put on the next...

Jan 31, 2010 - Leaving for Mana Island

FER: Hello everyone =) So we've been in Fiji now for a week and at first a bit dissapointed at the way things work here. Let me explain. While in Thailand we went from island to island with no problem, at our own pace, any time we wanted. We figured that would be the same here, and we'd spend the 5 weeks traveling from island to island, beach to beach etc. Well that's not possible here. Ill explain the details at home as they're a little confussing, but basically there's a monopoly and if you want to take a boat anywhere there's only ONE...

Jan 25, 2010 - The Robinson Island

Hello again! Starting from the 24th, we got up at 9.30am to get ready for the Robinson Island at 11am. We brought this instead of the Beachcomber because we thought it would be a better experience. It started at 10 to 11 where we got picked up and taken towards Natadola Beach. We got into a boat to the island and it took around 20 minutes. We got to the dorm, which had around 20 beds in it! The most weve seen so far. And were shown the showers. It was proper island style, where we had to use one bucket to fill up another bucket with a...
