Sep 30, 2011 - A plane, a bus and a crappy rust tub to paradise

Leaving Saskatoon was both scary and exciting. Up until we left I had not truly felt like this whole trip was real. The three flights that took us to Fiji were long, but it was altogether one of the best journeys I have ever had going such a long distance. Having thordie there with me made the whole experience substantially easier than if I would have gone alone. Sitting on those planes with him I realized that if I had ended up traveling by myself I probably would not have made it much past the fist security check in saskatoon airport, I...

Aug 28, 2011 - Wrap up and home from Fiji

Friday evening passed in the hotel room as I spent the time doing some analysis of the EREA review data. I figured I might as well do it when there were no alternatives! Saturday dawned - the last day of the course. It was an easier day for me on two scores. First of all, it would finish a bit early in order to accommodate another class at 2pm. Secondly, I didn't have to "perform" - simply keep three parallel groups of presentations on time and keep an eye on all three simultaneously. Even after six days, I don't really have a "feel" for...

Aug 25, 2011 - Five out of six ain't bad!

I am sitting down to write this as my class of 66 (or 65 or 62 or ...) - but big - puts the finishing touches to its group projects. We have a shortish day tomorrow because the room is needed by someone else at 2.00. I think we'll have sucked the juice out of this particular orange by then! Five days down, one to go! The students here continue to surprise me with their notion of what might constitute a reasonable attendance. I had a student turn up today who had missed the last 2 days. If it were up to me, I would have suggested she seek to...

Aug 24, 2011 - A couple more days in the classroom

I did make a separate entry for Tuesday but the IT gremlins meant it din't upload, so here is a double header. Tuesday was a challenge. In a group of this size, making genuine contact with the students is a bit difficult, and the size of the room, along with cultural reticence to speak our in public makes genuine dialogue a challenge. However, by close of play yesterday I had the sense I was beginning to break through - which is just as well, as the energy output required to "drive" the group is a bit high. I think they are getting a bit...

Aug 22, 2011 - The work begins

Monday evening after the first day of teaching. No pics today! Last night I was taken to dinner by all the University bigwigs - the same place Anne and I went last year - a Chinese seafood place called the Bo Wei I think. Wahab and his wife Rukshana picked me up, and we were joined by Murali (VC) and his wife, Sitendra (Dean)and his wife, Sarita (another lecturer) and Tito (Registrar). A lovely meal and a lovely evening, in an interestingly formal kind of way. Women on one side of the table, men on the other. Lots of deference to senior...

Aug 20, 2011 - Fiji day two: On yer bike

Let me start by saying that the chef has surely changed at this place since we were here last year. Fair enough - the beef in last night's beef Cajun salad (???)didn't come with free bone surprise, but there was plenty of chewy goodies in it! Having lashed out 10 Fiji dollars on 5 dvds of the Game of Thrones series, I watched a couple of episodes in the evening. Great stuff - with plenty of familiar British faces. Now to today's adventure. I had booked my mountain biking tour with Robert Rabotot online late last week. From his surname I...

Aug 19, 2011 - Fiji - the warm up

Thanks to Mick's good mate, Ken Nobin, he had been invited to teach a Masters course at the University of Fiji. Thus, as the clouds gathered and the wind blew on a wintry Sydney Friday, he headed for the sunshine. The flight with Air Pacific may have been a look into the future for Qantas - flying a subsidiary with all the benefits of off-shored staffing and maintenance. The three and a half hours passed uneventfully using my new Kindle - whose only disadvantage over a real book seems to be that you can't use it during take-off and landing....

Apr 2, 2011 - Fiji - Days 10 to 13 - Sun & relaxation

Fiji Day 10, 11 &12 - Beach House We arrived just after 9pm last night, checked in and we were shown to a grassy area to pitch our tent for the next three days. There is only one other tent here so we had choice of where we wanted to pitch it. The resort has a lot of dorm rooms as well as private cabins. It's a remote area situated on a secluded beach, no other resorts nearby. All the staff is very friendly, Rosa serves us breakfast and made sure she knew our names. There are bathroom and shower facilities near our tent which is handy as...

Mar 29, 2011 - Fiji Days2 to 9 - Sharks and Certifications

Fiji Day 2 Nadi Town- Walked down to Namaka Fish Market which is only about a 5 minute walk from Luisa's place. Checked out the fresh produce. Bought some oranges for a $1, a small watermelon for $2 and tomatoes for $1.50. Very hot, didn't take me long to start sweating. Nadi town seems to be very busy with vehicles and many hustling taxi drivers. Streets are dirty and lined with stores and places to eat. We ended up walking back down to the market with Ratu later in the afternoon to buy some fish for tonight's dinner - traditional Fijian...

Mar 22, 2011 - Fiji - Nadi & Islands

Bula from Fiji. We arrived yesterday to stay our new Fijian friends (couch surfers) home for two days. We have been living the "Fijian" way of life ever since. We were welcomed into Luisa & Tom's home which they share with Ratu (Luisa's cousin), Bio (Luisa's brother), Domoko (JapanEnglishlish student) and Shio (Domoko's 4yr old son who goes to kindergarten to leEnglishlish). Ratu is 19 and going to school in April for graphic design, Bio is 25 and is taking his 4th year of IT. Luisa is starting up her own travel agency from home and Tom...

Feb 27, 2011 - Sharky and George...

So there may be no-one called George in the entry but there are definitely Sharks!! WE SURVIVED!!! So we made it to a place called Pacific Harbour for the famous Beqa lagoon shark dive! It was incredible!! And even more incredible , Fiji style meant that Alison got to do her intro dive at the shark feeding so got to watch it all from '12m ' (or more like a sneaky 14m). Love it - and lucky sharks don't attack from below eh bro! So while Ali and I sat on the bottom at 24m watching mahusive sharks cruise around and munch on fish scraos (giant...
