Apr 8, 2005 - Fiji! Bula Friends

As you know, we are in Fiji. We are staying in a resort about 10mins out of Nadi. Everyone here is very friendly and they all say 'bula' (a Fijian welcome) as you walk by. Things here are taken at a very slow pace, which is wise considering the heat. Everyone works on 'Fiji time', which means things will be done whenever they get round to it. This is no bad thing, as it makes for a very relaxed and chilled time. We are sharing our resort with the Fiji rugby sevens world cup squad. We very nearly got our picture taken with them, but...

Mar 11, 2005 - Fiji #7 - Beachcomber.

Well, this was my opportunity to chill - albeit only for 2 days! Didn't do too badly, did some snorklin, got chased by a big bast*rd trigger fish and tried my best to get myself some colour. First day there I had a stroll down to the beach and was about to choose my spot and CLUBBED my foot against a piece of coral so hard my middle toe doubled in size and turned black! Tried my best to pretend nothin had happened but when you're on a beach where you're the only one stood up and the beach is relatively small - you're gonna get spotted...

We took a quick wander to the beach (check out the pictures once they're up) and found ourselves to be almost the only people there ! A quick stroll back and we were both frazzled.....but of course i tan pretty quickly....and....er.....Sarah doesn't but no burning !!! Yet !!! We'll finish this off when we get back from our Jet boat and treks over some 'hills'.....

Mar 4, 2005 - Fiji!

Bo**ocks! Missed my damn flight, mis-read my ticket somehow and ended up gettin to the airport 4 hours later than when my flight left! DOH! Now got to sleep on a sofa in the airport for 12 hours and wait for my next flight that I was lucky enough to be booked on. GRRR! NIGHT! =(( GGGGHHH! Adding insult to injury, SECOND camera's been nicked from my rucksack when it was checked in. Majorly pissed you wouldn't believe! >:o(

Feb 27, 2005 - Island stop over in Fiji

We arrived at the airport only to find that the flight to Fiji the day before had been cancelled so we didn't have a chance of getting on our flight as it was full with people who should have been on yesterday's flight. So after our initial disappointment we were told we would be going the next day and also were to receive some hefty compensation and were put up in a nice hotel for the night with all our meals, so we weren't too bothered in the end. When we arrived at the airport the next day we had a nice surprise as the airline rep...

Feb 24, 2005 - Two Country Bumpkins make the most of their time left in New Zealand

Hello All Here we are again, with just a few days left to go till we return to good old blighty. Well we have deffinately been making the most of things, as you will see, as you read on. We left Queenstown on the 20th February and headed towards Christchurch. However, two hours prior to Christchurch we hopped off the bus at a small town called Geraldine. We sat patiently and waited for our mini bus to pick us up and take us to Rangitata White Water Rafting Lodge. Our driver was a friendly chap and filled us in on all the sights along...

Feb 21, 2005 - The South Pacific

So I went to sleep on Saturday night on the plane and woke up on Monday morning in Fiji. I hear that Sunday was a good day though and I feel bad I missed it. ;-) The flight was great: I had a whole row to myself and, as per usual, slept for most of the ride. For the little time that I spent awake, I did get to see the moon shining over the vast expanse of clouds. We were 38000 feet above land and the moon lit up the puffy landscape with this silvery pale blue light. It was very ethereal and I was grateful. Later, I looked out the window to...

Feb 18, 2005 - Nadi, Fiji

Well, its 12:30pm on February 18th and I am sitting in a small badly lit internet cafe. There is no air conditioning anywhere and the temperature in this room is over 80 degrees. However, Fiji is amazing. Just the scenery is gorgeous. Where i am is just houses and fields but in the background there are large mountains with the clouds covering their tips - everything is covered in thick green foliage like a rainforest. The hotel where I am staying is about 10 minutes out of town. There is a small pool but that is all you need - no one has...

Feb 11, 2005 - "Feejee Experience" - Day 4

Day 4: Nananu-i-Ra Island to Nadi Up just after 8am and decided to go on an introductory scuba dive. So, skipped breakfast, filled out the requisite paperwork and learnt about how to scuba in 10 minutes. About 9:30, we were doing the "backwards fall" off the boat into the water just like commando's! At first I was apprehensive, to say the least, concerned that the pressure would build up in my ears or that I would have trouble breathing (since my snorkling experience). But once we went down a few feet, I found everything was fine. Breathing...

Where's Phil?

Feb 10, 2005 - In Fiji - temporarily

There wasn't really anything interesting between Los Angeles and Fiji. I watched a couple of movies on the headrest-monitors (each person had their own TV on the back of the seat in front of them) and slept a little. The movies I happened to watch were Taxi and A Shark Tale, neither of which I'd recommend spending very much money on. Fiji, as it turns out, is a really nice place to look at. It was dark all the way across the ocean, but when the sun came up after landing, the photo ops presented themselves. I'm looking forward to spending a...

Feb 3, 2005 - Auckland to Nadi

Up at about 9am to catch a plane to Nadi, Fiji. (Nadi is pronouced "Narndi". Turns out there is a silent "n" in front of every "d" in Fijian.) Booked a ticket on the "Airbus", a bus that shuttles people from various city locations to the airport. It was supposed to run every 20 min but from ten-thirty to ten past eleven, didn't see one. So I got a refund on my ticket - to the displeasure of the sales girl - and caught a taxi with a couple of other people. The flight on Air Pacific, Fiji's airline, was just like any other I have been on....

Where's Phil?

Feb 1, 2005 - Bula bula

"Bula!" can be heard at every turn in Fiji... it's akin to 'Aloha', though it just doesn't have the same warmth and ring to it, and I'm not sure about the origins of 'Bula'.... The close to 11 hour plane ride was much better than I expected- it was @2/3 full... I had a feeling before I left that I was going to be disappointed by Vitu Levu (the main island of Fiji)- which is good, in that I wasn't nearly as disappointed when I arrived at my hotel (formerly a hostel) on the Nadi (pronounced Nahndi) coast. The "beach" was more of a tidal mud...
