The final day of my travels had come but it finished on a high. Having to pack and leave all too early in the morning, our launch took us to the Seaspray boat where we were given an all inclusive (including alcohol!) tour of the local islands. There must have been about 50 people on the boat (not just backpackers) but the staff on the boat made sure we didn't get bored, providing us with plenty of singing and stories. We started the tour by visiting a village, where we had a cava ceremony and the chance to buy more Fijian handicraft. Back...Jump to full entry
Jun 7, 2006 - South Sea - a tiny piece of paradise
After a day of rest yesterday it was time for a bit of excersize so I spent the morning kayaking with Mike & Brian. It was really fun going downwind but not quite so good when we had to turn around and row back, especially when the wind then picked up and it was an effort just to stay stationery (and away from the rocks). The rest of the day was spent lounging until it was time to make our last transfer to our last island for the last day of my travels (sob!). The next island was South Sea, a small patch of sand rising out of the sea...Jump to full entry
After a sumptious breakfast it was time for a trip to a village on a nearby island. This was a chance to see a bit more of Fiji life in a fairly typical island village, pop 200. The visit included a tour of the church - devout Methodists here who pack the church out every Sunday - and a stop at the infant & primary school. The school was actually being supported by the Swiss couple who ran the resort and we got to see the Fijian haka performed by each class we stopped with. At the end of the tour we were presented with a market place full...Jump to full entry
May 31, 2006 - Fiji... eventually!
After having not slept all night me and Brian said our goodbyes to the other conservation buddies, apart from Nooshin and Mike who were following us on a later flight, and set off to the airport for our 5 hour flight to the capital of Fiji - Nadi. Once we got on the flight we realised neither of us had got our Fiji tour tickets nor our itinery so it was pretty lucky Noosh and Mike were following. After an uneventful flight we started our decent to Nadi. My excitement to getting to Fiji was reduced somewhat as the plane took 30 mins to...Jump to full entry
May 30, 2006 - Fiji
May 25, 2006 - Fiji !!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay guys, so I'm finally writing about Fiji. There is a lot to say, too much in fact. However at the same time, it will be impossible to really describe how great it was. I'm not going to write a separate entry for every place I visited in Fiji, because basically it's all either inside jokes or just lazing about in hammocks and on the beach all day. I'm just going to write one big blurb about Fiji here and you can imagine the rest of it. Fiji was nothing short of amazing. The beaches were beautiful, but not as great as one would expect,...Jump to full entry
May 16, 2006 - Kuata Natural Resort, Kuata Island to Nadi, Viti Levu Island
Our ferry was at 4pm today so after check out we just again had to relax on the beach and chat to those we'd met along the way and happened to be on the island aswell. After the usual goodbyes we were back on the boat and back to Nadi. We had a transfer taking us back to the first hotel we stayed at, The Aquarius. Unfortunately, we could get a flight to the States until the 18th which is where a bit of help from the travel agent would have come in as they could / should have suggested staying longer on the islands as Nadi doesn't have much...Jump to full entry
May 11, 2006 - Nadi and Bounty Island - Island Life
K: We got into Nadi when it was dark and so I really didn't have any first impressions. The guy at the backpackers we were staying in assured us that we did have a sea view and that the sea was just behind the row palm trees that we could see.... The next morning I was up at looking at my view and it was a nice one out towards the beach and sea, it made me feel a bit better as I was pretty low afer leaving NZ. We decided that we would head off for a few days to one of the islands in the Mamamuca group off Nadi. We chose to go to Bounty...Jump to full entry
May 10, 2006 - Auckland, New Zealand to Nadi, Fiji
We had an early start and a plane to catch .... next destination .... Fiji. Oh to feel hot and sweaty again!! As we landed in Nadi the Captain announced the temperature outside was 28oC - everyone whooped and applauded. We booked our Fiji trip through Flight Centre and Awesome Adventures chosing the Lazy Threesome package being 6 days / 5 nights on 3 islands (Now if we'd been told / known alot more about how it all works, we could have planned our stay better). Not that our package was bad but Michael wanted to stay longer in each place ......Jump to full entry
May 2, 2006 - Week 15
Wednesday 26th April 2006 100 days!! We visited the Whangarei town centre today and had a browse around the shops. We went to the river front and saw the Earthrace boat was docked so we paid $5 each to go on board and take a look inside. It is a very strange shape (you will see the photos when we can upload them at a latr date). and is designe to cut through the waves rather than go over them. We then drove to Whangarei Falls and had a short walk to view the falls. We then went to a different campsite for the night and we were pleased that...Jump to full entry
May 2, 2006 - Mango Bay to Nadi (Fijitime)
Our final gorgeous day in Fiji was spent lazing on sunbeds and snorkeling off the coral coast. We had our last indulgent lunch and then prepared to leave the resort on the coral connection bus around 5pm to the airport. As mango bay is hidden we got a lift with our luggage to catch the bus and then the heavens opened soaking all of our luggage as a river passed under the truck where we'd put the bags!! On the upside it had rained for the first time in the 10 days we'd been there so yes we agreed that lady luck had once again been on our...Jump to full entry
