Mar 10, 2007 - Trip Summary from Nadi, Fiji

Walking along the beach at Nadi in Fiji, a song that reminded me of Capetown came on my ipod. Given it was the last day of the trip, I found myself being forced to ponder hard the last 12 months. Everyone now and then there are moments that although not necessarily the best or worst of a given situation, are the one's which are so vivid and clear in your memory no matter the time passed from their occurrence. At the conclusion of this trip covering 364 days, 23 countries, roughly 140 hours on buses and coaches, roughly 80 hours on planes,...

Mar 3, 2007 - Nadi, Fiji

Hello all! Cynthia here.....We arrived in Fiji around 6:30am and discovered that there was an unexpected 12 hour layover. Air Pacific, god bless them, put us up into a very nice relaxing hotel and has given us three meals and a free phone call. We were pleasantly surprised! So we are currently in our first internet cafe, having already spent too much on fijian souvenirs. We are scheduled to leave the island around 7pm tonight and arrive in auckland around midnight. Hopefully, the pre-booked hostel will be accomodating. p.s. Amanda, I'm...

Feb 6, 2007 - Still Steaming to Tonga

Our first rainy morning, clearing in the afternoon. Another great day of MJ and bridge for Gretchen. We listed to a very interesting lecture on Sotheby's auction of some of Princess Margaret's jewelry which netted her son $17 Million plus to finance his business. Bob also attended a lecture on Tonga and Fiji, while Gretchen went to see the rehearsal of the forthcoming tango show. After dinner and the show by a great London West End male singer, we hurried to the South Seas Ball at the Queen's Ballroom which was decorated to the hilt island...

Dec 3, 2006 - Awesome Feejee and the elusive Saturday

How weird is this......? We left the Cook Islands on the Friday and didn't get there till the Sunday and it was only a 4hour flight....bizarre. We have missed a whole day of our lives cos of a date line! Nadi (pronounced Nandee) Town looks well dodgy at night and during the day there's lots of people on the streets trying to hassle you into buying things or going into their shops, it's cool once you get used to it though. The beaches are nothing like the ones in The Cook Islands, I think we've been spoilt and they're are nothing like the...

Nov 12, 2006 - Fidg-ee (Fiji)

Last minute trip this, as a chance to chill out for a few days. I'd driven to Queenstown on Monday afternoon, and challenged a Travel Agent to get my to Fiji the same day. By 9:30 that night I was sat in a hammock by the pool staring up at coconut trees! After a good sleep, and a swim on Tuesday morning I set about securing accomodation for the rest of my stay. Fortunately a bus/boat was leaving for Bounty Island (about 15km off the West coast)at midday, so I took this. We cruised through some of the outlying Mamanuca Islands, passing...

Nov 11, 2006 - Nadi

Back at the Nadi Bay hotel again - hanging around the pool for a few days. The staff were having a thing at Frequency up the road so I had a night out with a crazy french girl from my dorm. She came on holiday alone after her boyfriend didn't show at the airport - she hadn't thought their row the night before meant they were over!

Nov 10, 2006 - Nausori Highlands

Got up for an early start but 'fiji time' meant that we didn't get going until 9am. We drove up in the the Nausori Highlands and were dropped at a lookout where John the guide took over. He used to work in the gold mines up north but after his friend died he left the village (as the eldest this wasn't well received by the family who all work in the gold mines!) and is now finding it hard to find a wife in the city. Within five minutes he established that as I'm not married at my age I must be desperate to walk down the aisle so I had to...

Oct 31, 2006 - Nadi

Back to the Nadi Bay Hotel for a few days. Met up with the guys from Wayalailai in Nadi for Pizza. On Tuesday I decided to move my flights back so I can see something of the mountains and villages. Met Chris, Paul and Erica one night playing cards and we went to the fiji dance night and took a shopping trip into Nadi and went around the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple. Had a night in the locals nightclub aswell which was interesting - there was a bit of a dance off and lets just say the the scantily clad northern lasses dancing around...

Oct 29, 2006 - Vitu Levu, Fiji

We'd been warned away from spending much time on the mainland of Fiji (an island called Vitu Levu) mainly due to the fact that it doesn't have good beaches. We ignored this advice and decided we'd hire a car and go on a bit of a road trip. We were very thankful that we did as we found spectacular views, friendly locals and much more affordable accommodation. It was also great to have the freedom of our own car after months of relying on (often dilapidated) buses! We had spent a couple of days in Nadi enjoying being back in civilisation...

Sep 16, 2006 - Fiji

Fiji, well after being sick for near on 2 weeks I'm glad for to have landed in Fiji, "Its Fiji Time" as the locals like to say, which translates into "it'll happen when we can be arsed" which suits me, Ive always had Fiji blood in me it seems. I arrive fairly late in Nadi and expect the usual harrasment from the locals, Accomadation, Taxis, transport but nothing happens, I have my post flight ciggie and litterally have to harass the tourism staff to sort me out with a transfer to some hotel. After chatting to the tourism information I...

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

Sep 5, 2006 - FIJI

Fiji...what can I say...paradise! Me and Anneli spent 10 days there sunbathing, snorkling, scuba diving, swimming, relaxing and drinking Kava. The Fijian people are the friendliest people I have met so far on my travels and everyone always greets you with a enthusiastic "BULA" which means Hello. We spent our first 2 days on the main island in Nadi before we set off to the beautiful island..."Bounty Island" where we spent a wonderful 6 days. The fijian islands are amazing they are like desert islands literally, some of them are so tiny with...

Nicole In Oz!!

Jul 11, 2006 - Fiji

Well I was not looking forward to Fiji at all. i was ill, tired and was coming from winter in NZ to hot weather and was not looking forward to sweating like in Thailand again. But i loved Fiji. It was their winter so the heat went between 25-30 and somedays were even overcast and a bit chilly, didn't love those so much. Viti-Levu, not sure if its the main island but it has Nadi on it and that's where I flew into, was lovely. Not what I expected and the countryside was tropical and green, with mountains and lush fields. I stayed in a hotel...
