Oct 13, 2007 - Taveuni - The Garden Island

I've said goodbye to my shipmates and am off on my own for one more week of adventures in Fiji...Taveuni (The Garden Island). Gosh, it's strange to be alone for the first time in a month. It took so long to get used to the cramped boat with people all around you at all times. Now it's going to take a while to get used to solitude again....it's a pretty drastic change...can you say separation anxiety? It was quite lonely at the time, but in retrospect, Taveuni was the best place to get back to ME! It was a hour long flight on a little 12...

Sep 21, 2007 - Rabi Island

Friday is a special day. Just a few months before the chiefs of the local village contacted the Tui Tai to propose scheduled visits to their community. It was seen as a great experience to share their unique culture (Rabi is the only island populated by Micronesians who bought the island and settled it shortly after the Second World War). The day begins however, with two quick dives at 7:00 and 8:00 (before breakfast), and then at 11:00 we're off again for my third dive, #25 in my log book. The dive crew were terrific. Many of the other...

Sep 20, 2007 - Cobia Island, Ringgolds

We are now about as far away from our original starting point at Netawa Bay as we're going to get. We've anchored just off Cobia, what's described as a sunken volcanic crater. The crater is probably a kilometre wide, and only about three-quarters of its edge rises out of the water. It's surrounded by sandy beach, and overgrown with vegetation. It's occupied by a number of wild goats (we see several on the beach as the sun comes up), and a fairly large population of fruit bats. I start the day with my usual 7:00 a.m. dive, followed by a big...

Jul 23, 2005 - Taveuni - Fiji

CJ - the final destination for this trip, Taveuni (an island to the north east of Fiji) before heading back to the UK!! From what I had heard from other travellers, the mainland of Fiji isn't really worth visiting, but if you get a chance to see some of the outer islands then that is a different story. So having done a bit of research on Fiji, and knowing that it was well known for it's diving, I found a beautiful island called Taveuni which is about a 40 min flight (in a tiny 16 seater plane!!) from the mainland. Taveuni is one of only 3...
