Today is the first day of our tour but we don't have to meet up with everyone until tonight at our hotel. We are going to try to take a drive to Saqqara and Memphis which is where the first pyramids were built in Egypt. We will see the step pyramid, the bent pyramid and the red pyramid. The step pyramid (the picture I attached) looks like steps and was the very first pyramid built in Egypt. The bent pyramid is called that because it looks bent! And the red pyramid is built with stones that look red in the sunlight.

07-12-2009 Tegenstellingen zijn er genoeg in Cairo. Het verschil bijvoorbeeld tussen arm en rijk is erg groot. De middenklasse is de laatste jaren sterk gegroeid, maar Egypte blijft een ontwikkelingsland. Het aparte is wel dat iedereen hier een mobiele telefoon heeft. Het begint er sterk op te lijken dat de mobiele telefoon op hetzelfde niveau zit als voedsel en een dak boven je hoofd in de behoeftepiramide van Maslow. Vorig weekend viel me de tegenstelling in het bijzonder op. De donderdagavond zijn we na de maandelijkse ambassadeborrel...

May 5, 2008 - Saqqara Pyramids

There are literally forests full of aligned planted palm trees, rows upon rows, with their purpose being only to provide shade for the crops that they then plan between the rows. the bucolic pastoralism your confronted with constantly thus looks like your in the middle of Jurassic park when driving down many of the roads outside of downtown Cairo, like the reenactments of the dinosaur times when they show what they think the land/plants would be like back in prehistoric times.
