Saturday: Leaving the city behind, we stop at Saqqara to investigate the impressive step pyramid/necropolis of Zozer, god of the dead; the first and greatest pyramid of all Egypt. It was actually mastaba tombs stacked on top of each other. Imhotep constructed the building and it is considered one of the oldest monuments in the world. Next we went to Memphis (once the capital of Egypt during the 3rd dynasty). A huge statue of Ramses II was found there in 1820 lying on its side. A museum building was built around it.
