Jun 25, 2018 - First impressions of Egypt

Upon arrival in Egypt, at Sharm el Sheikh airport, at 02.40 the first impressions were 'welcome back to Africa, where they stand outside the airport calling ' medem, taxi, taxi'. Luckily, patiently waiting outside for me, a Sinai Diver's Backpacker's transfer driver (a la Boni from home in Zambia) was holding a paper with my name on it. Together with an American lady we headed to the car and set off for a 1.5 hour drive. Arriving at sunrise in Dahab, the taxi driver said; welcome to Dahab, in his very nice Arabic accent. Surrounded by...

Jan 13, 2013 - Parte 8 - Dahab!

Mar 27, 2012 - Egypt - Dahab

25th to 27th March 2012 Dahab These last 4 days were the relaxing part of our Egypt journey, and what a beautiful place to spend it in. The Mercure Dahab Bay View resort was incredible. You will need to look at the photos to see what I mean! Here, we changed tour guide and caught up with the second part of our group (the silly ones that took the 26 hour bus trip to Dahab). Hooray, we finally have Wi-Fi! That’s why our Blog has had so many entries. Our days were spent just lazing around the resort & enjoying the facilities. We also caught...

Apr 23, 2011 - Dahab

On the 18th we were up nice and early again, ready for another bus day to get to Dahab. That morning our guides told us it was now safe enough for us to visit the Egyptian museum - yay! We spent the morning looking at the treasures found in Tutankhamun's tomb and hearing more about the ancient Egyptians from our Egyptologist guide. After we finished, it was back on the bus for a 10 hour trip to Dahab. The 19th - 22nd were spent sunning ourselves and negotiating seafood and clothing bargains with the locals. On the 20th we hired a boat for...

Dec 31, 2010 - A Happy New Year's Eve in Egypt

Our Dec 31st just got better all day long. We got a call in the morning that our luggage had arrived. We went to the lobby and indeed this time they sent the right (last) bag. Like two of the other bags, it had also traveled to Tunisia (why?) before getting to us. We hadn't missed it too much, as it was the garment bag that mainly had our clothes for the New Year's Gala dinner. But now my suit and Jen and Katie's dresses had arrived, with just 9 hours to spare until we needed to put them on. First it was off to the beach, and the kids...

Dec 30, 2010 - Mellow days in Dahab

We've been sleeping in, enjoying light wind windsurfing, snorkeling trips and lots of wonderful family time, with a bit of online time checking emails and facebook. The kids had a great windsurfing lesson. Mom and dad had massages. Buffet breakfasts, lunch on the beach, and Thai and Italian dinners under the stars. Our snorkeling trip was great, lots of fun photos of that. We took a cab and went into Dahab. The town has a paved boardwalk with lots of restaurants on the Red Sea side, and shops on the other. There are a lot of backpacker...

Dec 25, 2010 - Santa brings the best presents

Sleeping in for the first time in a week was a great way to start Christmas day. At breakfast, a costumed Santa walked through the hotel grounds, giving out stockings. Luckily, the real Santa even visited our kids, but apparently the bigger gifts are back in Aix. Amazing guy that Santa. After breakfast, the Katie, Phillip and Jen all wanted to go windsurfing. Then as everyone was suited up and had picked gear, Geoffrey decided he wanted to go too. So Dad got his best Christmas present EVER, all of his family sailing together. Most family...

Dec 24, 2010 - Christmas Eve in Dahab

Another early wake up, 4am this time and we waited for our transfer, but it never showed. The boat hands were nice enough to call a local taxi and we headed to the Aswan airport in the dark. The taxi had a hard time getting up hills, with all of us and 4 bags on the roof. Going through the security checkpoint outside the airport was a bit unnerving, but we got on the right flights and all of our luggage (that we had in our possession) made it to Sharm-El-Sheikh safely. We had a one hour minibus ride up from the southern tip of the Sinai...

Oct 20, 2010 - Egypt

Just months before the Egyptian Revolution that ousted the Mubarak regime(January 2011), Shaun and I enjoyed a peaceful (though far from quiet!) trip to Egypt. We decided to go to Egypt while we were in South Africa, watching a FIFA Football match at the pub, and an advertisement for Egypt came on...we were sold! CAIRO We spent three crazy days in Cairo, which was almost overwhelming. The pictures provide a snapshot, though the sounds, the people, the "Egyptian hospitality", and all the smells of the markets, the cooking, the cattle, the...

Sep 8, 2010 - Our Last Day!

We only got about 1-3 hours of sleep before we were back up and and heading off to Assalah square again with all our stuff in tow to leave for the Mt. Sinai trip. I left a couple postcards for Matt and Kiki thanking them for everything and after saying our goodbyes to Kiki and her pup Siren (Matt was already asleep) we got in the tour van and were off. The had tied our packs up to the top of the van which made me nervous that they might fly off at some point but thankfully they never did. Then we drove around and picked up another 12...

Sep 7, 2010 - Safari to White Canyon & Colored Canyon!

Lisa and I made quite a day of it today, we got up early around 7am to go on a jeep safari to White and Colored Canyon, I kind of decided to tag along rather last minute but they were ok with that and they were fine with me not paying them until after we returned to Dahab since I hadn't had a chance to go to an ATM yet. The trips cost 130 LE, which was really well prices. So we got in the jeep and picked up 4 other people from Poland, they didn't speak much English but we could communicate a little bit, and then we headed out! Thankfully...

Sep 6, 2010 - Another day exploring Dahab's magnificence!

Today I got to sleep in again and it was fantastic! After a shower I headed back to the boardwalk for some food and possibly to buy some gifts for people back home. I needed to get something for like 12 people so I was going to have to do this cheap! I decided to walk all the way down the boardwalk area, it is enormous! I found a restaurant called Penguin Cafe and had pancakes for brunch as well as an iced coffee, again absolutely delicious! The pancakes are made from a really thin dough and they are cut in triangles, then they cover them...
