Monday 5th – Fine and Warm Went on a shore excursion at 8.30 to El Alamein. Went to the museum and had a demo of the battle. Then went to the War Memorials for the Commonwealth, the Germans and the Italians. All very impressive. Lovely drive along the coast. 107km and tons and tons of holiday homes being built. Arrived back 2.30. Wandered the stalls at the port and Paul bought a dress for 15E. I read for an hour or 2 then we had a drink in our room and a bottle up in the Spinnaker then dinner. Jul 16, 2007 - Al Alamain

Lars and I decided to take the bus to Al Alamain where Montgomery defeated Rommel. The desert campaign went on from 1940 through 1942 and was a huge turning point in the war. Al Alamain is about 100 kilometers from Alexandria. The bus just dumped us on the road and we walked through the heat and dust to the museum and the cemetery. It must have been awfully hot in those tanks! The campaign waged back and forth between Libya and Egypt. In the end Rommel's forces where chased 1500 miles through the desert.
