Jun 12, 2014 - Some coast and Sonderborg

After a day of orientating ourselves (finding where the local shops were etc.) we headed out, south along the coast to Sonderborg. Our drive took us through rolling countryside, by pretty bays or fjords and small villages. We also discovered that the Danish roads were excellent and had very little traffic on them. It was a real pleasure to drive along. After several stops to admire the views we arrived at Sonderborg. Sonderborg history goes back to 1169 when Valdemar I erected a castle fortress along the waterfront. Over time the castle was...

Jul 11, 2012 - Sonderborg Guided Tour

Bent and Vivi had sshown us a lot about Denmark and had taken us to some of the cities both near and far. What we discovered was that the town we liked best was their very own. Sonderborg. They wanted an opportunity to show us some more of the local flavour so Bent took us on a guided tour of the town and the immediate surroundings. It was very personal and we found it enjoyable. We walked to the harbour in the morning to check out the shops on the plaza that went through the middle of the town. The harbour was alive with activity. The...

Jul 8, 2012 - Through Germany and into Denmark

From Schiedam in The Netherlands to Sonderborg in Denmark We woke at 5:00 am. Whose idea that was, we’ll never know. Nobody would own up to it. It was going to be just the four of us. Riekie, Rob, Lidwien and I. We were pretty much packed and after Riekie made cheese and ham rolls for the trip and we grabbed things like the phone chargers and toothbrushes, we were ready to get underway. By 6:45 we were heading for the motorway. The traffic would have been described as “light” if there had been any at all. We saw the occasional jogger and...

All the confirmaton classses pictures are hanging around the wall in the education room. We also looked at the graveyard. Then drove on to Grasten Slot to look at the gardens there and to see the church where...

Jun 19, 2012 - Copenhagen to Sonderborg and catching up

Sunday, June 17, 2012 Got great stuff at the bakery again, cleaned the the apartment, took the bus to the central train station and put our bags in lockers. We went to the Carlsburg Brewery and took the tour. You no longer see any part of the actual brewery, so it's not really worth it . The exhibits are nice, but it's not that great. The elephant statues are neat, though. Went to Christianborg Slot in the Town Hall Square. Christanborg Slot (Palace) is a royal building used by the Queen for royal functions like the New Year's Assembly and...
